Even if you don't consider yourself a home decor aficionado, there's a good chance you paid attention to the way your house looked this year.
If you asked me what my home looked like back in March, I would tell you: There were piles of clothes on my floor, my TV remote was most definitely lost somewhere underneath said pile of clothes on the ground and my home decor? Non-existent.
Between late-nights and early-mornings, the last concern on my mind was achieving the top home décor trends of 2020. Now, fast-forward to nine months later, and present-day? Decorating my space is one of my favorite hobbies.
You would think in such turbulent times, homebound young adults (like myself) would be opting for calming pieces over chaotic ones; however, incidentally, that is not the case. This year was all about infusing our homes with fierce, eclectic items that similarly echoed the chaos unraveling outside our four walls.
From oversized floral wallpaper to bold monochromatic moments, here are the top five biggest home decor trends we saw in 2020.
1. Bold monochromatic moments
In a recent Elle Decor article, Jonathan Rachman of Decorist explained the need for home-enthusiasts to step outside their comfort zone.
Instead of reverting to neutrals or pales when hearing the word 'monochromatic,' try opting for shades such as "Cobalt blue, Kelly Green, or even Aubergine" to make a stunning statement. He furthers explains that when done "in a daring way, [it's] full of personality and elegance."
To create a cohesive monochromatic moment, try the following:
Olive Sofa — Metal Legs l Starting at $879, at west elm
One-of-a-Kind Hand-Knotted New Age Blue/Navy 5' x 10' Area Rug l Was $2,015, Now $699.99, at Wayfair
360 Lighting Modern Table Lamps Set of 2 l For $89.99, at Target
2. Floral wallpaper
Caroline Rafferty of Caroline Rafferty Interiors also tells Elle Decor that floral wallpapering is having a moment. She explains, "clients are gravitating toward fresh interpretations of floral pattern."
To add a fresh floral flare to any room, try the following:
Deny Designs, Holli Zollinger Floralista 2'x10' Wallpaper l Was $322, Now $135.09, at Macy's
Floral Peel & Stick Mural by Drew Barrymore Flower Home l For $69, at Walmart
Peonies Peacock Blue/Gold Removable Wallpaper l Starting at $7, at Pottery Barn
3. Layering old and new
Every home tells a story, and one way to do that is by carefully curated a collection of home décor. While flea markets and antique shops are great one-stop-shops, right now, many of us are lacking access to them; and in which case, there are tons of online retailers with offerings just as influential.
But one major thing to keep in mind here?
"[Take] the design of [your] home to the next level by getting comfortable with mixing and matching old and new," Lauren Buxbaum Gordon of Nate Berkus Associates tells Elle Decor.
To mix-and-match like a pro, try the following:
Round 9.5" Metal Cocktail Table l Was $129, Now $122, at Pottery Barn
Juri Ornate Accent Mirror l Was $209.99, Now $189.99, at Wayfair
Zekera Serving Cart in Champagne l For $188.70, at Walmart
4. One Single Print
Find yourself overwhelmed by one-too-many colors clashing your rooms, or are you finding that you went a bit too pattern crazy? Streamline the decorating process by opting for one single-print to display throughout. After all, what could be more impactful than a subtle distinct statement that's apparent throughout?
To unify any room with a single-print, try the following:
Nautical 2 Piece Framed US Patent Set Wall Art l Was $98.39, Now $78.71, at Kohls
E by Design, Anchor Stripe 16 Inch Red Decorative Nautical Throw Pillow l Was $79.99, Now $26.99, at Macy's
East Ubran Home, Anchors l Was $199.00, Now $139.99, at Wayfair
5. Rattan and Wicker furniture
Our favorite childhood material, rattan, and wicker have made a total resurgence, and noticeably, it's evolved refreshingly. Home enthusiasts can now opt to bring this outdoor favorite that is now indoor-friendly. To achieve this trend, in a muted way, reach for dining room chairs, recliners, and wicker baskets.
Seagrass Utility Basket, Medium - Havana l Starting at $23, at Pottery Barn
Avocet Rattan Fan Back Accent Chair - Opalhouse l For $190, at Target
Delphine Cane Accent Chair In Beige l For $234.72, at Walmart
