How big will Black Friday be?
Originally an American phenomenon, Black Friday has been getting steadily bigger in the UK over the last few years with 2017 the largest on record in terms of the number of people shopping online and 2018 just marginally behind.
According to leading web analyst Hitwise, House & Garden was the second fastest-growing Black Friday retail category in the UK in 2018, increasing 8 per cent as stores clocked up an impressive 11.7 million visits from Monday 19 to Sunday 26 November.
What’s more, 26% of all Black Friday shoppers went to Amazon, which saw a 3% increase year-on-year, as shoppers flocked to purchase memory cards, Echo Dots and Fire TV Sticks among other things. eBay was next, followed by Argos and then John Lewis. Real Homes will be bringing you the best deals from all four retailers plus many others, including Wayfair, Dunelm and Currys.
According to the analysts at PwC people under 45 are the most likely to be interested in Black Friday and Cyber Monday, with 30% of people aged 25–34 surveyed before Black Friday last year intending to buy something.
And, if you are wondering whether to hold out for Boxing Day sales, be warned that retailers are well-informed to put their all into Black Friday instead. According to the British Retail Consortium in 2017 Black Friday searches overtook Boxing Day in a trend that persisted in 2018.
Helen Dickinson OBE, Chief Executive or the British Retail Consortium noted at the beginning of 2018, 'Interestingly, as retailers have spread out their Black Friday promotions, the popular shopping week overtook Boxing Day last year on Google search volumes, as consumers took more time to research deals.'
If you needed confirmation that it is never too early to start looking for deals, there it is – and here we are to help you find them.

What is Black Friday?
Black Friday started in the USA. The term had previously been used for bad economic events like Friday 24th September 1969 when a group of financiers tried to manipulate the gold market, leading to an economic crash. However, it was then applied to the shopping chaos that was noted in Philadelphia on the Friday after Thanksgiving in 1961 and the name has stuck. With many people taking this day off and using it to begin their Christmas shopping, it is one of the busiest days in the commercial calendar, both on the streets and online.
Black Friday is no longer just a US phenomenon – it's gained unstoppable momentum in the UK over recent years, too. Along with Cyber Monday, both events are loved by bargain hunters as they offer the chance to make big savings on everything from tech and to cushions.
With the weekend falling about a month before Christmas, it is a great opportunity to bag Christmas gifts and winter deals.
When is Black Friday 2019?
Always immediately after Thanksgiving, this year's Black Friday will fall on Friday 29th November. The sales will, however, last for about a week or so, and some retailers, such as Amazon, will start cutting prices before. In fact, Black Friday last year saw deals starting to drop a good week or two before. In other words, keep your eyes peeled for great deals from the beginning of November onwards.
When is Cyber Monday 2019?

Cyber Monday is always the Monday straight after Black Friday, so that means Cyber Monday 2019 falls on 2nd December.
Traditionally, this is when you'll see lots of electronics and technology discounted, perfect for Christmas present and home shopping.
What is the difference between Black Friday and Cyber Monday?
There is not a lot of difference really, since lots of deals are set to last from Black Friday through to Cyber Monday and beyond.
Once upon a time, Black Friday offered great deals on consumer electronics, while Cyber Monday focused more on clothing and jewellery bargains. Now, though, you can get great deals on everything across the entire weekend.
Although Black Friday originated in the US, Cyber Monday has become the bigger event there in the last few years. Many people are preferring to spend their Friday enjoying the holiday and so shops are reacting with great deals on the Monday too.
In the UK most of the activity is on the Friday, with some shops dropping deals in the days before.
What can you buy for your home on Black Friday and Cyber Monday?
Lots of things! From mattress deals to TV sales, so it's possibly the best time of the year for shopping, big or small. With homeware brands ever more attuned to the Black Friday and Cyber Monday buzz, you can expect big savings from well-known brands.
When it comes to home tech and appliances, Amazon and John Lewis are probably your best bet. And then there's AO.com, and Currys , of course. Other retailers worth watching include Wayfair and Habitat . Big savings on furniture and homeware can be expected everywhere from Made.com to Anthropologie.
That said, sometimes, retailers opt out of Black Friday and Cyber Monday – which is why it's worth checking back here for updates because we'll be monitoring the best deals for you.
Are Black Friday and Cyber Monday savings real or not?
As with any sale, there are some end-of-line products as well as items that haven’t proved popular throughout the rest of the year in the mix on Black Friday and Cyber Monday. However, there are some genuine savings on offer. Here's what you can generally expect:
- TVs will be sold at massive discounts, ideal for the viewing-heavy festive season.
- Amazon will offer great discounts on its own products (think Echo and Echo Dots – both great Christmas gifts.
- Classic Christmas gifts – from cameras to smart home tech – will be way cheaper than usual.
- Power tools, kitchen appliances – such as washing machines, and even electric razors will all be discounted.
- It's not just coffee machines, microwaves and other must-have appliances that are up for grabs. Nope, off-season buys, such as lawnmowers, BBQs and more will be discounted, too.
- eBay even takes part, offering Black Friday deals.
- Home accessories will be up for grabs at brilliant prices – and we'll have the latest every day.
- Xbox One X, is expected to be discounted, as is the PS4 Pro. Perfect for that 'big gift' for the kids.
- Looking for furniture? You'll be able to check back with us for the best bed and sofa bed deals.
BUT... since many products' prices yoyo frequently, checking the price history of what you're planning to buy on CamelCamelCamel.com or PriceSpy will tell you whether the savings are real or illusory. These clever and handy sites show you whether a price is likely to re-occur, so, if you prefer, you can allocate your budget to something that is more rarely discounted on Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
Whatever you're shopping for, do bear in mind that as prices change frequently (no doubt arranged with the supplier way in advance), it's not always worth racing to get something you're still saving for, because the product is likely to be discounted again soon (think Boxing Day sales). Always check, rather than be distracted by the recommended retail price, especially on big ticket home tech like televisions.
Top tips for bagging a Black Friday deal
1. Sign up to mailing lists: Subscribe to newsletter lists from your favourite retailers to be informed of deals as they drop. You can also sign up for our newsletter because we will be sharing the best home deals on Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
2. Be prepared to research: Retailers will surface some of their best deals on homepages and top pages, but also the ones they want rid of or the ones they think will get the most traffic to the site. This is why it pays to navigate away from the main Black Friday landing pages. If you know what product you are after, head to that section of the site and get ready to scroll.
3. Check out the lesser known brands: The biggest brands may have the buying power to offer the best discounts, but they will also be the busiest sites and stock is more likely to go quickly. Look for lesser known retailers (check their reviews on Trustpilot first) and see if they have the products you are after.
Best deals to expect on Black Friday and Cyber Monday
We don't yet know exactly what Black Friday UK 2019 and Cyber Monday UK 2019 will offer in terms of deals, but, from past experience, we can make some good guesses, so keep your fingers crossed for:
1. Amazon's Alexa devices and Amazon products
Amazon's Black Friday sale last year saw massive discounts on its own devices. Their Prime memberships and Amazon services were also reduced, too. So, if you're thinking Christmas gifts expect sales on the Echo Dot, Amazon Fire TV Stick and more. See the latest offers on our Amazon deals page.
2. Smart home tech
As we said above, Amazon slashed prices on their own smart products last year – think the Echo, Echo Dot, Kindle... and also helped customers save on the Hive thermostat. John Lewis also knocked money off the Google Home smart speaker. Amazon Prime Day also saw massive savings on everything from video doorbells to smart plugs. In other words, it's the perfect time to do your shopping. Bargain Christmas gift anyone?

TVs are always sold at great prices on Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Currys knocked loads off TVs last year, and Amazon typically has some cracking TV deals. Best page to bookmark? Our TV deals page has all the latest.
You'll sleep in comfort going into 2020, as you can expect offers on all of the best mattresses over the Black Friday weekend. Last Black Friday saw big online mattress brands such as Simba and Casper get in on the action, with some of them offering 30 per cent off over the Black Friday weekend. We will keep you up-to-date on all the best mattress deals.
It would be rude not to get some brand new bedding considering the low prices, right? Everyone from John Lewis to Marks & Spencer cuts prices on items such as bedding and towels – and it's a particularly good time to buy extras. See our bedding deals page for the latest bargains.
Guaranteed a good night's sleep after all of the money you'll be saving, last year saw homeware haven Habitat cut their prices during the event, and a couple of years back, Very offered a 50 per cent discount on several beds and sofas. Keep ahead of the deals by checking out our bed sales page – or see our round ups below.
7. Sofa beds
Sleeping a few more family members this Christmas? Treat yourself to a new sofa bed from John Lewis or Dunelm. It was only a couple of years ago that they had the deal of the century on their Sacha sofa bed, dropping the price by over £400. Peruse our list of the best sofa beds to get an idea of what you might want to buy come Black Friday, and keep an eye on our sofa bed deals page.
Buying a new sofa is a big investment both financially and in terms of the time it takes to choose the right one. Start your search now by checking out the best sofas, then when Black Friday is here, see what is on offer from the best brands.
Those on the hunt for a sofa deal will be pleased to hear that Marks & Spencer knocked a huge amount off products across all its departments last year. We expect more big savings online from high street retailers and web-only shops looking to maintain the competition.
9. Fridges and freezers
Buying the best fridge freezer is another purchase that will set you back a pretty penny. It is an appliance that you really don't want to skimp on either, buying cheap is a false economy (they don't last and tend to be less energy efficient) so take the bargain bonanza that is Black Friday as chance to buy something you would not usually be able to afford.
A purse-friendly fridge freezer deal to store all the Christmas grub you've pre-ordered is definitely in the running for one of the best Black Friday deals this year. Currys PC World offered top-class deals on their fridges and freezers last year, as did AO.com.
10. Washing machines
Whether you want to upgrade to the best washing machine you can, or your current one is on the blink, Black Friday is a great time to buy. Good washing machine deals are a definite during Black Friday, especially from brands such as John Lewis , who, tends to slash prices. Currys are also known to offer up to £££s off selected models.
Shop safely this Black Friday and Cyber Monday
Just as you would usually, ensure you're shopping securely. Paying by credit card will give you more protection than paying by debit card. If you pay with PayPal or another third party payment service, you may not be eligible for these payment protections.
