Thought you’d seen every mattress in a box brand? Think again! There’s a new kid on the block: it's British, offers tons of choice and plants a tree for every mattress bought...

Brook + Wilde is the newest mattress in a box brand to hit cyberspace but is it really worthy of your attention – or a spot in our list of the best mattresses? The bed-in-a-box mattress industry is already bursting with jauntily marketed brands. They all offer excellent vacuum-packed foam mattress that can be delivered to your door in a matter of days. You can’t try before you buy, but you do get a free sleep trial – 100 nights is the norm – so buying is a risk free process.

So what makes Brook + Wilde (opens in new tab) different? For a start it is not only the company’s headquarters that are UK-based, the mattresses are actually made here, too. In the heart of Derbyshire, no less. Refreshing.

Then there’s the founders’ mattress pedigree. Not just another tech start up, co-founder Andrew Tyler was a director at Dreams for three years, where he founded and launched the company’s highly successful mattress brand Hyde and Sleep. Yes he’s savvy on the branding front, with help from fellow founder and marketing boffin Jonathan Coulson.

But Andrew knows his onions when it comes to the science of sleep and has worked hard to develop mattresses that offer the best sleep possible. This is where Brook + Wilde’s proposition really differs: its two mattress designs (The Lux and The Elite) both come in three comfort levels; soft, medium and firm. 'We totally reject the "one size fits all" approach. To make only one mattress, and suggest that everyone likes the same comfort choice doesn’t make any sense. We know everyone is different, so we offer a choice of firmness,' explains Andrew.

If you’re looking for something a bit more exciting technology-wise, again Brook + Wilde can deliver. 'Our biggest innovation is our "wave technology", which is a unique layer of support foam with different densities that support shoulders and hips better to allow improved spinal alignment,' Andrew adds. 'When this is coupled with up to 3,500 pocket springs, comfort levels are taken to a whole new level. You’d be amazed at the difference our mattresses make – people write to us to tell us how they have changed their lives.'

Brook + Wilde’s customers are not the only benefactors; the company also plants one tree for every mattress sold. Not with its own bare hands, mind. 'We work with a non-profit organisation that plants trees all over the world in places they are most needed. It’s important to us to support reforestation and make a difference to the world we live in,' says Andrew.

With beds, pillows, bedding and even PJs available, Brook + Wilde is a one-stop-(online) shop for all your sleep needs. We think it’s a brand worth exploring if you’re looking to switch-up your night time comfort levels in time for Christmas. Prices start at £499.
