Most people are au fait with the superior benefits of a pocket spring mattress compared to their cheaper cousin, the open coil. For the uninitiated, the former features springs that are sewn into individual pockets, each moving independently to offer personal, targeted support. The latter lets the springs roam free, so you’ll feel every move your partner makes, and whoever is the lightest may as well sleep on the side of a hill!

So we’re agreed, pocket springs are good. Well, Somnus has taken the pocket spring scene to next-level luxury with its newly launched Legacy mattress range. Featuring up to 17,500 springs in a king size mattress, this North Yorkshire based brand has invented a special layering system to cram them all in.

Called Sensa Intelligent Pocket Springs, thousands of tiny springs (individually pocketed of course) are arranged in three layers – up to 4,000 per layer - to create incredibly responsive support closest to your body. These small springs are supported by much bigger pocket springs in the base of the mattress and, together, aim to provide unnoticeable weight transference. Basically your partner could be King Kong and you’d never notice, at least while you’re eyes are still shut.

There are six mattresses in the Legacy Collection, each upholstered with super-breathable natural latex for a healthy sleep environment. Double mattresses are priced from £1,259 to £2,499.
