The World Architecture Festival and Inside World Festival of Interiors, which runs alongside it, are preparing to reveal the winners of the world's most prestigious architectural awards; the categories are World Building of the Year, Future Project of the Year, Interior of the Year and Landscape of the Year.

The WAF programme are reporting an unprecedented number of entries – over a thousand – received from 81 countries. Among those competing are heavyweight practices such as Zaha Hadid, who have designed a Petroleum Studies research centre in Riyadh, and Grimshaw, in the running with a futuristic science museum design in Miami (top). There also has proved to be plenty of room for more unusual projects – and lesser known international talent. A conceptual pharmacy by the Taiwanese practice Waterfrom (below) and a residential complex in Uttar Pradesh by Sanjay Puri Architects also have been shortlisted.

The Festival is in its eleventh year, and this year it's travelling to Amsterdam and runs between 28th to 30th November.
