We love an IKEA hack here at Real Homes. Not only because they make the perfect weekend project, but also because they have the potential to allow you to make a super cheap of furniture look pretty expensive or because they provide a smart solution to a common problem. And the MOSSLANDA Picture Ledge is without doubt one of the most popular items for hacking.

We know, we know, they offer the perfect solution for creating easy gallery walls. But, there's so much more that IKEA's infamous picture ledge has to offer. From providing a handy storage solution to building the ultimate playground for your kitty cat, these are some of the more unusual Ikea hacks we've come across...

1. Create a sleek bedside table

Fixing your bedside table to the wall not only saves space, but creates a sleek, contemporary look while it's at it. We love this use of two MOSSLANDA picture ledges – both positioned to face inwards – for a simple bedside storage solution.

It's also possible to use a simple strip light on the inside of your upper picture ledge to create a subtle glow throughout your bedroom. If you're really stuck for space, this could be an easy way to replace bedside lamps entirely.

2. Build a playground for your furry friends

You'd have to be pretty dedicated to your pets to allow them an entire wall, but if this cat playground appeals, we salute you. Position your MOSSLANDA picture ledges at varying heights to create an exciting space for your furry friend to explore, and add scratch-able surfaces, toys and other bits and bobs to maintain their interest.

Knowing how fickle cats can be, we can't promise that all your hard work won't go completely unnoticed.

3. Conceal your cloakroom

Some people love the look of open shelving, clothes racks instead of wardrobes and having everything on display, and others really don't. if you fall into the second camp, and are working with a space that doesn't allow for a designated cupboard for storing coats, this is the solution for you.

Simply attach your mosslanda picture ledge to the wall, the wrong way up, fix on a few hooks to hand your coats, and run a slim curtain rod – like the Ivar – along the underside. Then, choose a curtain that suits your space and you're away.

4. Store brooms, brushes and other awkward items

Whether you're looking for somewhere to keep that old hockey stick you have hanging around, are on the hunt for an umbrella storage solution, or think your broom and brush set-up could use a rethink, look no further than...you guessed it...the MOSSLANDA picture ledge. Place each of your ledges vertically, and at regular intervals, using twine to attach together.

5. Build a simple storage solution

Don't want to fork out for a desk with storage? Or want to make something you already have more suitable? Simply attach a couple of MOSSLANDA picture ledges to the underside – both with the ridges facing inwards – and choose a storage container that can slide in and out like a draw. Here they opt for something plastic, but we see nothing wrong with choosing a wooden, or even wicker, solution if that suits you better.
