1. Warm up your rooms with easy fall decor accessories

We love the colour of the walls in this living room (it's one that could work year-round) but if a whole-space revamp is not on your list of priorities at the moment, you can give your rooms an instant, warming makeover with just a few new accessories, whether curtains, cushions, throws or rugs. Only got the budget for one new buy? Pick a new rug – a large one will have the biggest impact on transforming a room. This Stockholm rug is by Ikea – laid over a pale or dark flooring, it adds a welcoming tone to the space.

2. Cheap fall decor ideas? Layer up on throws and blankets

Throws and blankets in autumnal tones, chunky knit blankets to add tons of texture, faux sheepskin or faux fur throws to add depth... layer them up on chairs, sofas and beds – it's such an easy way to give old furniture a new, welcoming look and to add bags of comfort.

3. Use artwork to add fall color to a room

We love this living room – it's so cozy thanks to the color scheme... but actually the artwork on display is doing lots of hard work to create a welcoming feel, too. The best news? You don't have to buy it all from scratch – look through old books and magazines for beautiful images in autumnal colors that you can pin up or frame. The foliage detail on the mantelpiece works a treat, too. Find out more about how to display photos artfully in our expert guide.

4. Paint a feature wall in a warm shade

If any of your rooms are feeling particularly chilly, just painting one wall (usually the one that's the most light-starved and grey-looking) can make all the difference. So, pick out a shade you love that will work in your room and go to work – within a couple of hours you'll find the whole tone of the room has changed. It doesn't have to be bright orange – terracottas, cinnamons and other spicy shades work brilliantly. Take a look at our orange room ideas design guide for more inspo.

5. Pumpkins, pumpkins, pumpkins

Hallowe'en or not, pumpkin accessories bring an instant autumnal feel and make for fab fall decor ideas. We love these fabric pumpkin decorations, which we'd be happy to keep out year-round...

6. Fairy lights = fall decor ideas for evenings

The simplicity of this idea is what makes it so great. Simply find some battery-powered indoor fairy lights, pop them in a bell jar or glass jar and you're done. They work on dining tables, on kitchen islands, on hall tables, in fireplaces, in alcoves... (need we go on?)

7. Drape an autumnal garland for an instant fall decor idea

If you really want to go to town on decorating your home for fall, here's a great way to do it: with a garland. This one is oozing autumn colour and will instantly transform a mantelpiece. Of course, you can drape it around bannisters, along windowsills, down the center of a dining table... the choice is yours. Shop tons of garlands like this at Amazon US or Amazon UK.

8. Loving the garland? You'll want a wreath too, then
