When it comes to decorating for Christmas, if we’re going to take advice from anyone, it’s going to be Kelly Hoppen. Renowned for her gorgeous interior design style, the icon appeared on This Morning at the perfect time, because let's admit it, we are all starting to decorate for Christmas.
From different Christmas tree looks to styles of Christmas table decorations and more to make your setup really stand out, it was inspirational.
"The more lights, the more tinsel, the better."
In the words of Kelly Hoppen herself, and, we couldn't agree more. Because yes, when Holly noted Kelly was wearing some silver tinsel at one stage throughout the masterclass, she couldn't not ask whether or not Kelly tinsels her tree.
And, yes she does! Here are her top festive Christmas decor tips:
1. Add your own festive touches
Kelly Hoppen was walking us through three different Christmas tree looks from John Lewis, and the one thing that really stood out was how just a few simple touches can really make your Christmas tree display more unique.
Mixing baubles that you or the children of the family have collected over the years, with a perfect mix of Christmas baubles can make for a really special display.
While, Kelly Hoppen also recommended that you add in sprigs of freeze dried eucalyptus. We loved the red – while natural bluey green is perfect for a more neutral Christmas tree theme. Essentially Hops have a lovely selection of dried Christmas flowers.
2. Enhance the size of your tree
Whether you've a lovely artificial Christmas tree that's on the small size, or if you've chosen a small but mighty real Christmas tree, adding in sprigs of eucalyptus and pussy willow branches will not only add interest, but it will also enhance the size of your tree.
The star goes on top, of course, which will add height also. Then you can go to town with tinsel and Christmas fairy lights, of course.
3. Match your Christmas tree colour scheme with your table setting
This helps unify your Christmas look, and choosing the same table setting theme will ensure you create a gorgeous, cohesive display.
Kelly Hoppen took us through a classic white and silver Christmas table theme which was created with gorgeous placemats and other matching silver beaded coasters from the White Company. The star of the show on this table? The Pincone Placecard Holders, super stylish and what a lovely personal touch for Christmas day.
4. Keep foliage at the end of the Christmas table
This is a really wise (and seemingly obvious) piece of advice but we all know that we've often tried to tell our Christmas cracker jokes through a Christmas floral display too many times.
While Kelly Hoppen added more sprigs of eucalyptus and pussy willow to the table setting itself, she still recommended to keep foliage at the end, which would help bring the look through and down the table, uninterrupted, rather than disrupt the functionality of the dining area.
Next to create this silver, white and grey Christmas look were candle sticks, which can be used post-Christmas on a mantlepiece. Gorgeous.
5. Be resourceful with your decor
For the table continuing on from the more traditional red Christmas tree theme, Kelly Hoppen used gold feathers, placed on the table, while red tumblers, leftover baubles and candles from IKEA helped make this look warm and inviting. Gorgeous hand blown tumblers achieve an even more sophisticated finish and to top it off, tall natural dried hare's tail and a sprinkling of festive fruit helped pull this look together and bring it a little back to nature too.
6. Be inventive with wrapping
One of the defining moments of Christmas, as when presents are tucked under the tree, they will add to your Christmas tree decor theme!
"‘My wrapping is atrocious."
As said by Kelly. And, our wrapping isn't much better, but we do have plenty of gift wrapping ideas to inspire your method this year.
Kelly Hoppen mentioned just how important ribbon is, and how going for a classic brown paper look with a little festive colour is always a winning way of wrapping gifts – we couldn't agree more. If you wanted something more current but still very original and authentic looking, you could try the new Furoshiki wrapping trend out for really beautiful results.
The last piece of very inventive advice? To hop online and pick you favourite cartoon to print off and wrap with. Remember Beano? Well you may find that Denis the Menace is bringing your gifts to life this year!
