Remember when Ikea sold a white four poster bed a few years back (I do, I've got one but wish I'd bought more and started up an Ikea blackmarket bed selling company)? Their four poster was a hugely popular buy that was really tricky to actually ever find in stock (and took some tenacious shopping to get hold of).

I've still got mine and I've moved house since then. The bedroom is a completely different shape and smaller than the first, and differently decorated too. But you know what? The bed fits right in because it's a) white (can't go wrong colour), b) a simple frame design like the Argos buy above and below, so it's perfect even in a small bedroom, despite being a four poster.

So, having scanned the internet for one that's like it (in case I ever break mine) for – quite literally – years, I was very happy to come across this Argos four poster last night. It's a dead ringer(ish) for the Ikea four poster and, amazingly, no more expensive – it's currently on sale with 25 per cent off at just £298.99.

The Blissford four poster double bed comes with a distinct advantage over the Ikea bed, though: it's available in a wood finish, too. And it's a beaut. I love the white finish, but the natural wood finish has a subtle limed effect that lifts the grain of the wood and brightens up any decor.

The tapered posts are elegant and clever wood joinery hides the fittings. Its clean, modern lines are perfect for creating a calm, restful – and spacious – look, even in a small bedroom (although check your ceiling height before you order). Sprung wooden slats in the base offer support and comfort for a refreshing night's sleep.

Size-wise, it's available as a double or king size, and the all-important height is 200cm. There's a roomy 21cm clearance between the floor and the underside of bed, should you need that for storage. Self-assembly's needed (which is good news because there's no way you'd get that upstairs in one piece). Mattress not included.
