John and Linda Johnson converted the loft above their attached double garage in Madeley, Cheshire, to create a new bedroom and bathroom for their son Richard.
They brought in architectural designer Jason Knight, who found that it would be more cost-effective to replace the roof with a new one using prefabricated attic trusses.
John and Linda left the planning details to their designer and hired main contractor Mason & Mason, which completed the project within budget in 10 weeks.
The conversion was almost independent of the main house, with access via a separate staircase, so the couple were able to stay in the house during the build. A similar conversion would now cost around £28,000 plus VAT.
