A dramatic blue bedroom makeover

Karen Knox’s master bedroom has been transformed thanks to her bold approach to design and colour

Karen Knox, an interior stylist and homes blogger, waited for two years to give her all-white bedroom a dramatic makeover. ‘I’d decorated in neutral colours as a quick fix when we first moved into the house. After two years of living with the scheme, I wanted a big change,’ she explains.

After working on a project for a client with dark grey and blue walls, she found her own colour scheme inspiration when she picked up a limited-edition print by Angelique Houtkamp, which now hangs above her bed. ‘I colour-matched three of the blues in this print at my local DIY store, and then painted my walls with tester pots until I committed to this shade by Valspar.’

After two months of hard work, the finished room has quickly become the couple’s favourite in the house. ‘When friends or family see my bedroom for the first time, I think they are a bit shocked by the colour but they all love it,’ says Karen. ‘Having this shade on every wall makes the room mine, and is reflective of my personality and home style. Next on my list is to paint the ceiling a dark shade, too.’

Before the bedroom makeover the room was clean and neutral, but its white-painted walls and furniture felt bland to Karen
