This year, we're all trading our typical holiday experiences and festivities, like parties and gatherings, for an opportunity to create new traditions at home. One of my family's favorites has always been baking together. So, with things slowing down again this holiday season, I thought it would be fun to create something new and unique which my kids and I could bake and decorate. Enter: snow globe cookies.
I love this Christmas cookie recipe because it's both beautiful and delicious. While my family certainly makes sure we eat our fair share of these cookies, we'll also wrap some up to share with family and friends. Wrapped in a cellophane bag and tied with ribbon, they're a cute gift to drop in the neighbor's mailbox, too. It just feels extra special knowing someone put in a lot of effort into something just for you! So that’s what we’ve been doing for our neighbors this year.

How to make snow globe cookies
These cute cookies start with a festive gingerbread cookie recipe and use an easy DIY icing to create the whimsical decorations. Let's start with the cookies!
What you'll need:
- Tree-shaped cookie cutters, small and large (these cookie cutters are just $1 at Target)
- Butter knife
- Ziplock bag
- Blender or whisk
- 2 bowls
-3 cups of flour
-2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
-2 teaspoons ground ginger
-1/2 teaspoon baking soda
-1/2 teaspoon salt
-14 teaspoon ground cloves
-1 stick unsalted butter, at room temperature
-1/2 cup (packed) brown sugar
-1/2 cup molasses
1, Stir the first six ingredients in a large bowl.
2. In a separate bowl, beat on high the butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy for 2 minutes.
3. Add in molasses and egg. Beat for 1 minute.
4. Add flour mixture. Beat on low for 1-2 minutes.
5. Mold into single mound.
6. Wrap in plastic and refrigerate for 1 hour.
7. Preheat oven to 350.
8. Roll out dough and cut out cookies in 1/8 inch thick.
9. Using a butter knife, cut out a few large round circles to use as your globes. (Make sure they are larger than your tree cookie cutters!)
10. Then, cut out large and small trees to decorate your globes with.
11. Bake in oven for 12 minutes (Time in the oven is key! Be careful they don't over bake)
12. Transfer cookies to cooling rack.
13. Let cookies completely cool, then you're ready to decorate!
-4 egg whites
-1/2 pound of confectioners’ sugar
1. Blend 4 egg whites + 1/2 pound of confectioners’ sugar together. No blender? Whisk the two together for two minutes.
2. Roll a ziplock bag down and pour icing into a corner.
3. Seal ziplock bag + twist extra to make your own DIY frosting bag
4. Using scissors cut a *very* small end off the corner of the bag where the frosting is.
Next: Decorate your snow globe cookies
This is the fun part! Here's how to decorate your snow globe cookies.
Start with zig-zags over you trees. Sway the icing bag back and forth over just your tree cookies to create a drizzle effect + or cover the cookie completely for a snow blizzard effect. Set the trees aside.
Take the giant round circle gingerbread cookie and slightly squeeze on the frosting bag over the bottom portion to create snow on the bottom. And then make small dots on the upper portion of the giant round gingerbread cookie to create, “snow falling.”
Next, go back to the tree cookies and squeeze a little icing on the back to serve as "glue", then place the trees on top of the round gingerbread cookie to make your snow globe!
Package them up:
If you plan on gifting your cookies, wait until the cookies are completely dry, then package in cellophane bags, treat bags, or small gift boxes to give to family and friends. I wrap mine in cellophane, then fold a small piece of cardstock in half and hot glue the cellophane wrapping inside (see above) to create a true snow globe effect!
