Before any guarantee is issued you already have Rights under the Sale of Goods Act 1979. This means you have six years to make a claim for faulty goods in England, Wales and Northern Ireland; in Scotland you have five years. However, if making a claim six or more months after purchase it can be difficult as you need to prove the fault was present when purchased and not for example normal wear and tear. This is where a good guarantee can make it easier and quicker to get sorted if there is a problem.

Who offers what?

Magnet (magnet.co.uk)

Installation: Two years – defects within two years inevitably would be resolved unless it was very clear that the product had been abused.

Kitchen units and products: 15 years – cabinets including carcases, door fronts, shelving, end panels, wine racks, cornices, pelmets and tandem drawer runners are covered for 15 years. Laminate worktops are covered for 10 years, solid work tops are covered for five years.

Appliances: Manufactures warranty.

Verdict: With FIRA Gold for kitchen products but not for installation. Like the full circle service offered by Magnet. Part of this is a thorough inspection one year after installation to check the kitchen is looking and performing exactly as it should. As most problems usually happen in the first year this makes it easy to get all problems sorted without complaint or asking!

B&Q (diy.com)

Installation: Five years – B&Q says that ‘approved installers are independently audited to government approved standards. As a final measure once we have confirmed a homeowners satisfaction in our installation service, they will receive a five year workmanship guarantee; the best of any national retailer in the UK today.’

Kitchen units and products: One year guarantee which covers all kitchen cabinets and doors and accessories.

Appliances: Manufactures warranty but you can pay to extend for up to five years.

Verdict: B&Q has got competitive this year by upping the ante and offering a five-year workmanship guarantee. But products that can suffer from wear and tear only have a 1-year guarantee. Cooke and Lewis kitchens by B&Q hold FIRA Gold for installation.

Homebase (homebase.co.uk)

Installation: Three years – it doesn’t cover wear and tear but if a door becomes loose or a cabinet needs to be adjusted, they will come out to fix it.

Kitchen units and products: 10 years against manufacturing defects on all kitchen cabinets, doors, and drawer fronts. Appliances Guarantees vary based on product and brand.

Verdict: Looks good with FIRA Gold certification for Installation, which can include electrics and gas works, such as certification, kitchen carpentry, and plumbing. Also FIRA Gold for kitchen products by Nobia.
