When it comes to thinking up Halloween snacks, it's not a bad idea to have a load up your sleeve that don't contain sugar – after all, they'll be snacking on sweet treats all night long.

These tortilla bats are simple to make, needing only smoked paprika and olive oil, but... oooh, aren't they enticing. You can hand carve the bats – or if you would prefer/want to speed up the process, find some biscuit cutters to make quick work of the bat shapes. Served with homemade tomato salsa, they only take around 30 minutes to make, with only 14 minutes of cooking time. This appetizer serves four – but you can adjust to suit your family.

  • ½ tsp smoked paprika
  • 125g cherry tomatoes, quartered
  • ½ small red onion, finely chopped
  • 65g roasted red peppers, drained and finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tbsp lime juice

1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/gas mark 4 and grease and line two baking trays with baking paper.

2. Brush the tortilla wraps with the oil and then stack them in twos. Using a bat cutter (or your own artistic skills to cut out the bat). Add the tortilla bats to a large bowl and sprinkle over the smoked paprika. Gently toss them until they are well coated.

3. Spread out tortilla bats on the baking trays and cook in the oven for 7 minutes on each side until they're golden and crisp.

4. To make the salsa, combine all the remaining ingredients and add to a blender. Pulse a few times until roughly chopped and a bit pulpy. Season lightly and then serve the bats with the salsa.
