Graham Jones got in contact with bespoke kitchen designers Higham Furniture while waiting for planning permission to design a kitchen with a more industrial feel. The kitchen was part of a larger renovation, which involved knocking down a wall that divided the kitchen and dining to create an open plan space. This would allow both the kitchen and dining room to look out over the back garden.

Project notes

The owner: Graham Jones.
The property: A London-based property undergoing a full renovation.
Project cost: £46,497.

The original brief from Graham was quite detailed, which helped with the process, but the space was awkward, and Graham wanted to use some of the quirky nooks that had previously made the space look busy. Taking these requests into account, the designers at Higham Furniture stripped back the space to make use of the main walls of the room and to create a more sleek and functional kitchen.

The combination of Shaker cabinets in an inky black – Little Greene's Lamp Black, to be precise – a striking pipework pendant light and brown leather chairs helped create the industrial feel homeowner Graham was looking for, while adding a distinctly masculine feel to the space.

A popular feature thanks to their timeless finish, metro tiles were used along the entire sink wall to create interest and to act as a functional splashback.

Positioning an induction hob on a kitchen island ensures the space is set up for cooking and entertaining guests at the same time, which is perfect for Graham, who loves to host friends.

A stylish final addition, burnished brass ironmongery was used to contrast with the Lamp Black painted units and to tie in with the light bulb filament.

A combination of knobs, pull drawer handles and cupboard catches, all from Armac Martin, make up this finished look.
