‘New feature tiles make a floor less ordinary and are available in a wide range of designs, from contemporary parquet and geometric patterns right through to modern images of grass,’ says Claire O’Brien, trend manager at British Ceramic Tile. ‘Keep your walls fairly plain to make the floor the main feature of a room.’ This grass-effect look (left) is perfect for an extended outdoor kitchen or games room.

Forget the dated floral designs of the past – this is how to do modern flora with the comfort of carpet, and it’s great for a large room. Pick out highlight colours (here, lime, white and navy) and decorate/accessorise around it. Avoid using other patterned items in the scheme – this carpet does all the talking.
