Putting one of the best cooling mattress toppers on your bed will work wonders for getting a great night’s sleep, especially during a heatwave. Regardless of whether you’re a side sleeper, back sleeper or usually the deepest sleeper, it’s safe to say it can be uncomfortable trying to nod off on hot nights. You might be waking up regularly or simply can’t get to sleep initially. Either way, a cooling mattress topper will save you from sticking a leg (or more) out of your duvet in the night.
Haven't heard of a cooling mattress pad? Essentially, it’s just like one of the best mattress toppers that you add for comfort to your sunken mattress, only it's made with cooling materials like latex or gel-infused foam that absorbs and dissipates heat to keep your body temperature regulated. Some include materials such as bamboo and graphite which are lauded for their heat beating qualities.
We’ve tested a few cooling mattress toppers (and less chunky pads or protectors too) and found some of the best on the market, selected for their construction, quality, additional benefits and price (and they're worth the purchase), so you can buy now and catch up on sleep, no matter the weather. So if you were considering upgrading to the best mattress but don't have the budget for one with cooling qualities just yet, simply slip your new cooling pad on your bed and drift off in no time.
The best cooling mattress toppers
This is one of our best mattress toppers too, loved by us and other customers for its incredible cooling properties. From the Rem-fit Snow collection, it really lives up to its name as the best cooling mattress pad.
It's technically a mattress protector, rather than a topper, so it doesn't have much cushioning. Though this means you do get the added benefit of dust mite and allergy protection. And if you are content with the feel of your mattress and just wanted the cooling qualities, that should be no issue.
The star features? Nordic chill fibres that dissipate body heat up to 10 times faster than cotton, making this Rem-fit protector your go-to when creating the ultimate summer sleep sanctuary. Its membrane barrier also works to keep you sweat free throughout the night. Our tester loves this topper, and found it was cool and crisp to the touch, even before putting on the bed. And once they'd stretched the edges over each corner and fitted a sheet on top, you could feel the chill through, almost instantly.
It is the most expensive on this list, but for the really hot heatwave days and the sleepers that suffer from night sweats, it’ll be the best option to keep you feeling cool. And we’d know. We tried, tested and gave it a wash and dry before using it again.
One of our firm favourites that has stayed on this best cooling mattress list for a while is the Panda the Topper. And there’s many reasons for it, other than its cooling gel layer. Namely, our reviewer found it to be super comfortable and supportive, and loved its impressive eco-credentials.
This is due to the gel-infused memory foam mat being a good 5cm in thickness. It works to improve comfort, since it moulds your body’s shape. Better still, it’s eco-friendly too, being made entirely of bamboo fibres. Though bamboo is not just good for the environment, it's also for its moisture wicking properties, making it the best moisture-wicking mattress cooler.
It may be a higher price than most, but for all of these added benefits, as well as being completely machine washable, it's a bedding no brainer.
If you want to give your mattress a new lease of life, the Otty Bamboo mattress topper offers a quick fix to a mattress replacement that’ll cool you down in the meantime. We've rated it the best memory foam option given its impressive thickness and superior comfort.
The topper uses the same great selling features of their Pure Hybrid mattress too; a layer of bamboo and charcoal that works simultaneously to create a cooling sleep surface. These fabrics are moisture-wicking and odour-eliminating for your freshest sleep yet, not to mention they’re eco-friendly alternatives. It sticks to your mattress without straps, because it has a clever anti-slip base. And it works!
In our opinion, firm memory foam always feels cooler whilst sleeping. Upon testing this topper from OTTY, we loved it. Especially when paired with the hybrid OTTY Pure Plus mattress (opens in new tab), that is. This combination is extremely comfortable, and not to mention luxurious, for side sleepers and back sleepers alike. We also tested it atop a cheap pocket-sprung mattress, too, and this was when we really noticed its breathability. It's definitely not too soft so as to engulf you, gently cradling you above. Just bear in mind that it will add 5cm to your mattress, so if your mattress is already quite thick in depth then this is something to consider.
You can’t wash or dry this topper at home either, so a dry cleaning job would have to do. Since it’s also quite expensive, it’s not the most affordable option on our list, but you will save on the life of your mattress.
If you’re looking for a way to keep your bed sweat-free without over-spending then this best budget buy is the ideal add-on that’ll make a difference. At nearly half the price of others on this list (and the rest on the market), Silentnight has the best affordable cooling mattress topper.
Using Airmax technology, the topper has mesh sides for air flow to prevent overheating. Upon testing, we loved this 'Airmesh' side panel and found it helps to increase circulation around you as you sleep. And it’s filled with super lightweight hollowfibre, which we and customers alike love on warm nights when you need less cushion and more crisp. Though this means some may prefer a plumper alternative, and we wouldn't recommend it for year-long use.
You can machine wash and dry, without worry of damaging its construction thanks to it’s synthetic fibres, which also make it great for those with allergies. Though it will need a re-plump after wash.
Whilst this doesn't exclusively claim to be a cooling mattress topper or pad, Simba’s performance protector has the added benefit of keeping you sweat-free while you sleep. In our review, we found it to be particularly good at wicking away any odours during the night – something particularly useful when it comes to keeping you cool.
The 200 thread count cotton cover allows for breathable air flow throughout your bedding, from mattress through to your top sheet. But here’s where the tech comes in. Paired with the use of Bi-Ome technology which actively eliminates microorganisms and fights odour, you’re guaranteed to wake up fresher, even on the stickiest of nights.
Speaking of keeping clean, it can be washed at 40°C, then tumble dried, but it’s recommended to use biological detergent if you want to keep the tech intact. Note we did find the fit to be best after the first wash, as to begin with it was a little baggy. It is on the pricier side, starting at £90 for a single, but compared to investing in a new mattress or lots of fans, it is a sound investment.
If you suffer from aches and pains and need some extra support from your mattress topper as well as cooling factors, then this Dunelm gel option may relieve all your night time stresses.
Unlike traditional memory foam toppers that can feel a little sticky as they absorb your body heat, this cooling protector combines the comfort of memory foam with integrated gel particles that absorb and disperse body heat. This also works to improve airflow and increase breathability as it wraps around your body, hitting all pressure points. Bonus!
As for the cost, it is one of the most expensive on our list, but it’s a year-round option that will boost comfort and cool levels with spine-comforting foam and cooling gel. Plus you can bung it in the wash and dry all before bedtime, since you'll find you can't sleep without.
What to consider when choosing a cooling mattress topper
Before you buy, be sure to find the best cooling mattress pad for you. Are you struggling to sleep at night during heatwaves? Are you wanting something to help you stay cool at night? And do you want your bed to be cool to the touch as you get in? If so, then it's worth considering the price, what it's made from and how well it washes.
If instead you're wanting an insert to stop you mattress getting dirty and free from spills and stains then a mattress protector will do more to guard your investment bedding buy.
Which material to go for?
Cooling mattress pads are made from materials that absorb body heat and wick away moisture, and regulate your temperature. There are a range of different materials used (and some well-guarded secrets), but all aim to increase breathability, which helps cool you down. Factor in whether you require extra cushioning, an anti-allergy option or you are buying consciously with the environment in mind. This will determine whether a memory foam, synthetic or bamboo cooling mattress topper will be best for you.
Does a cooling mattress topper work?
The best cooling mattress toppers will make a difference to your overall sleep temperature. Based from our tests, most are moisture-wicking and temperature regulating, helping you to keep cool compared to a regular protector or topper.
The degree of success will, of course, depend on the type and what works best for you. Do you suffer with night sweats? Are you a side sleeper? Do you need extra padding?
How we tested and chose these cooling mattress toppers
After this summer's heatwave, a we can surely say many across the country have had uncomfortable nights sleep. Lucky for us, we've had our best cooling mattress pads to hand, and have taken it as the perfect opportunity to see if they live up to their name. For the ones we have tried on this list, we've slept on them, washed and dried them before giving them another go again. If we felt cooler and slept better, it's a win from us. But given the icy competition, we've also considered their added benefits, like whether they provide extra cushioning or mattress protection. Wondering what more went into this reviewing process? See our how we test page details.
For the few we're yet to test, we've chosen them based off great reviews that suggest a cool night sleep was had. As well as, cross-compared for price and overall value for money. Because a sweat-free night shouldn't be an expensive one.
Here's what some of our testers had to say about the cooling topper they chose:
Annie is our Deputy Ecommerce Editor and has tested the entire OTTY bedding range. She finds the combination of the OTTY Pure Plus Mattress and the OTTY Bamboo Topper the most comfortable for her sleeping position. She was a front sleeper but has now converted to her side. This topper, once added to the mattress, screams luxury. Its bamboo and charcoal construction make it feel super breathable, and when testing this atop a pocket-sprung mattress, it did an incredible job of cooling.
Lindsey is an expert reviewer and has tried the whole bedding range from Simba, including their cooling mattress protector.
'At the risk of oversharing, though I am cooler in my Simba bedding this mattress protector has faced some clammy nights, and a chance to put that Bi-Ome tech to the test. The good news is, my bedding stays fresh even when I leave it a bit longer between washes. What is hard to prove is that this is the Bi-Ome at work or not, but it is a result I am happy with either way.'
Millie Hurst is the content writer and Editor across Ideal Home and Real Home brands. She's tried our best cooling mattress protector (and now reaches for it every time a heatwave comes into play).
'This protector has great eco-credentials, made of 100% recycled ocean plastics. It also adds an extra layer of comfort and, most importantly, it keeps the mattress underneath cool and clean so I can hold onto it for years to come. I love that you can just throw it in the wash when needed, too.'
