Hunting for interior decor ideas at this time of year is such a joy because so many new trends are starting to emerge for the months ahead. We've been seeing a huge rise in really bold patterns, and not just one pattern either, oh no, multiple patterns – pattern clashing.

1. Start simple with patterned bedding
Embracing patterns can be as simple as treating yourself to a new duvet set. Sainsbury’s Home has a new range called Dutch Glam which will be hitting the stores and online this month. Big blousy florals inspired by Dutch painters from the past look great, team them with a headboard with a different floral design on or look out for vintage paintings to hang above the bed. If you want to create balance, keep your walls plain and add another element like brass for a glamorous feel.
2. Layer up patterns to add plenty of depth to a room
Here’s a great example of how to create this eclectic look by layering your patterns on top of each other. So how do you make it work? Each of the three prints – blind, curtains and wallpaper have common threads. They each have a dark grey element, the designs all have a floral link and the blind and curtains are the same design but in different colourways. In contrast, the desk lamp, shelving unit and stool add a metallic dimension that also offers a plain aspect, you need both to balance the look successfully.
3. Go all out with your pattern clashing
If you adore pattern then go all out with it! This fabulous wall is relatively easy to create, especially if you are a dab hand at DIY. The wallpaper is the same design in two different colourways, Paradise in Nightshade and Paradise in Aquamarine so that is a key aspect to consider if you want a cohesive look. Accessory wise, the geometric black and white coffee table adds a new dimension and textured rug and sofa add a tactile quality. The coloured cushions and vases are in shades matched from the wallpaper which ties the look together perfectly.
4. Create a more cohesive look by choosing patterns with a similar colour scheme
If you love pretty florals and geometrics you can make this look work successfully by choosing designs that have similar colour tones. For example, here you can see the coral of the Manipur geometric sofa fabric is also in the Grandiflora Rose fabric so you get a visual link that makes this scheme work. You could even add in more patterns, like the cushion on the chair – it’s from the same Grandiflora range, but a different design.
5. Make colour clashing work for your interior style
Whatever your interior style, pattern clashing can work – be it country cottage or uber modern. This gorgeous bedroom from @mollymahonblockprinting’s Instagram is a great example of how to use various patterns together, including florals and stripes. The pink and yellow prints are the same tone so they are easy on the eye and naturally work well together, the blue floral cushion and the green hearts design add a new colour pop and pattern while the bold lamp shade adds a zing of boldness that finishes off the look.
