How to choose the right sleeper sectional for you

Measurements: It may sound obvious, but before buying you'll want to make sure your sleeper sectional fits the room you intend to use it in! It can be a good idea to measure out the dimensions of the sleeper sectional on the floor of the room you're going to put it in first to get a better idea of its size.

Remember to assess the depth of the sleeper sofa, both in sofa form - so you have plenty of room to walk around the room and access doors and windows - and when the sleeper sofa is extended. Take a look at our small living room layout ideas to see if your planned room layout is the best use of limited space.

It's also worth bearing in mind that with a futon sofa bed the backrest becomes a part of the sleeping surface, whilst with a pull-out sleeper sofa, the sofa back remains in place, which can mean that when extended the bed takes up quite a bit more floor space.

Make sure to check and measure access requirements too to ensure you can get your sleeper sofa into the room you plan to use it in - this can be easier with a sleeper sectional that comes in modular parts.

Seating space: This one is fairly self-explanatory, but if your sofa bed is going to be your household's main sofa then make sure you have enough seating space for everyone to sit comfortably. A sectional sleeper sofa is great for families or couples as it allows two people to recline, or extra room for kids to pile on.

Mattress size: Always double-check the size of the sleeper sofa mattress or the futon's sleeping area before you buy, as they can differ greatly. Although a sofa bed may say it's full-size, it often isn't as generous as a regular mattress would be - both in width or length - so if you're likely to be sleeping two guests, and they're staying a good length of time, you may want to go for a bigger sleeping area to make them more comfortable.

Mattress construction: As well as the mattress size, it's also well worth checking what type of mattress construction you'll be getting with a pull-out sleeper sofa. Budget pull-out models tend to have thinner mattresses that  - other than the height of the sleeping surface - don't really offer much more comfort than a futon sofa bed, whereas higher-end options offer innersprung or memory foam mattresses with greater depths.

For the full lowdown on the difference between mattress types, read our guide to how to choose the best mattress, but generally speaking, the deepest mattress is likely to be the most comfortable (we've probably all encountered the lumps and bumps of the bedframe sticking up through a thin sleeper sofa mattress!).

Are sleeper sectionals comfortable

The truth is a sleeper sectional is generally going to be a little less comfortable to sit on than a dedicated sofa because it has to hide the mechanics that help it to extend into a bed somewhere within the frame. This means the seating over the bed section is likely to have has less spring in it and will tend to feel firmer to sit on than a regular sectional.

But that's not to say a sleeper sectional isn't still a great piece of multifunctional furniture, and you can still use a sleeper sofa as your main seating as long as you don't mind sacrificing some squish-factor.

When it comes to sleeping, how comfortable a sleeper sectional is depends a lot on how firm you prefer your sleeping surface and which type of mattress you choose, with the thickest depths often offering a comparable sleep surface to a regular bed - albeit potentially a little shorter or narrower than a standard mattress.
