How to make a cheese toastie like Jamie Oliver

So, how does Jamie Oliver go about making his mega cheese toasties? Here's everything you need to know:

1. Jamie Oliver starts by buttering his bread on both sides, before adding a liberal amount of cheese to one of the slices of bread. He recommends Cheddar, Red Leicester, or a mixture of the two.

Top tip: if you're looking for something slightly different, Jamie Oliver also suggests the following flavour combinations

  • Mrs Kirkham’s Lancashire cheese, Wensleydale & apricot jam (or even orange marmalade). Serve with a pickle.
  • Keen’s Cheddar, Red Leicester and dry-cured smoked ham. Serve with baby spinach, watercress and apple salad.
  • Coolea, Westcombe Cheddar, a tablespoon of chopped onions slow-cooked in a splash of red wine vinegar and a slice of roast ham.
  • Keen’s Cheddar, sliced tomato, quick-pickled red onion (sliced red onion soaked in red wine vinegar, salt and a few thyme tips), sea salt & freshly ground black pepper.
  • Westcombe Cheddar and Gruyère, thinly sliced smoked ham and a lick of Dijon mustard. Serve with cornichons.

2. Then, Jamie Oliver places the second piece of bread on top, before transferring to a non-stick frying pan and cooking for around three minutes on both sides. He recommends opting for a medium heat to ensure that your toastie cooks evenly and you ultimately achieve 'internal cheese lava flow.' Mmmmm.

3. Next – and this is where it gets really good – Jamie Oliver lifts his cheese toastie out of the pan and grates a small amount of cheese into the base of the frying pan, along with a pinch of cayenne pepper.

4. Jamie Oliver then returns his cheese toastie to the pan, allowing it to cook for a minute or two in the melting cheese below.

5. He then flips it to the other side before removing from the pan and serving.
