The British Gas Warm Home Discount offers a one-off £140 payment (inclusive of VAT) towards the energy bills of those who need it the most. Whether that's you, an elderly relative, or a friend or family member who meets the means tested requirements – more info on that below.

While winter is still a little way off, applications for the scheme are set to open in the not too distant future, so we wanted to make you aware of the scheme – and encourage you to sign up to the text alerts so that you don't miss out. 

What is the Warm Home Discount?

Winter can be a difficult time financially, with soaring gas bills leading many to seriously feel the pinch on their purse strings. In recognition of this, the government launched The Warm Home Discount Scheme (opens in new tab) (WHDS) in collaboration with various energy suppliers back in 2011. The scheme offers a one-off £140 payment towards energy bills for those who need it the most.

In order to claim the discount, you must complete an online application form, which is set to go live in the not too distant future. While British Gas have not released an official date for the launch of the 2019/20 scheme, they have opened a text alert scheme (opens in new tab), which promises to notify users as soon as the scheme goes live.

It's well worth signing up to the alerts if you think the scheme could be of benefit to you or someone that you know, as British Gas have declared their right to close applications at a time of their choosing. So, you'll want to ensure you apply as soon as possible.

Who can claim the Warm Home Discount?

While we probably all think we could benefit from knocking £140 off our winter gas bill, this scheme recognises the significant disparity in need and is only open to those who meet specific means-tested requirements.

Those who are deemed eligible are split into two groups, both of which we've explained below:

Core Group (Pension Credit Customers)

If you, or someone you know, is a Pension Credit customer, they belong to what is known as the 'core group,' and will be considered, automatically, for the discount.

There is also a chance that partners or account holders of Pension Credit customers will also be eligible to apply for the scheme.

Broader Group (existing British Gas customers)

To be deemed eligible for the discount, you must be an existing British Gas customer  – or the partner of an existing British Gas customer and be in receipt of one of the following.*

  • Savings or Guarantee & Savings element of the State Pension Credit (unless already qualifying as part of Core Group);
  • Income Support;
  • Income based Jobseekers’ Allowance;
  • Income related Employment and Support Allowance (which includes a work related activity or support component);
  • Universal Credit (low income elements);
  • Child element for children aged 5 or under;
  • Disabled child element;
  • Be a customer with a gross annual household income (HHI) of less than £16,190 and living with a mental or physical disability or illness, or there is vulnerability within the home (children living in the house aged 5 or under) or of pensionable age;
  • Be a customer with a gross annual household income (HHI) of less than £16,190 and spend 10% or more of household income on energy bills to heat the property.
