This Snickerdoodle cookies recipe is simple but classically delicious. Better still, it's super easy to make and quick too – it takes just 20 minutes to prep and 10 minutes in the oven. Our recipe makes 36 round cookies – or you can use a cookie cutter to give it a Christmassy feel. We've used a star-shaped cookie cutter, but you can use any shape you like.

- 2 3⁄4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 2 teaspoons cream of tartar
- 1⁄2 teaspoon salt
- 1⁄2 cup butter, softened
- 1 3⁄4 cups sugar, divided
- 1⁄2 cup shortening
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 1⁄2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1. Preheat oven to 190°C/ 375° F. Grease the tray and prepare the parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
2. In medium sized bowl, whisk the flour, baking soda, cream of tartar and salt together.
3. In another bowl, cream together the butter, 1½ cups of the sugar, shortening, eggs and vanilla extract. Next, fold in flour mixture and roll it into 1½ in. balls.
4. In a third, small bowl, mix together ¼ cup sugar and cinnamon. Roll the balls in cinnamon-sugar mixture, and finally, arrange them on the prepared cookie sheet.
5. Bake for 10 to 13 minutes, or until they're just set. Allow the cookies to cool on cookie sheet.

Snickerdoodle cookies are said to be German originally, and the word 'snickerdoodle' is probably a corruption of 'Schneckennudel', German cinnamon rolls.
Why do I need cream of tartar in Snickerdoodles?
