The purpose of a shower pump is relatively simple - to maintain a constant water pressure. But the things that make a shower pump the right fit for a specific water system are more complex. There are two general classifications of shower pump: positive head and negative head. Beyond that, shower pumps can also either be single impeller - which can only cater for one temperature of water, or twin impeller - which can be used for both hot and cold water.
A positive head shower pump relies on gravity to provide a flow of water at the outlet. Because of this, there needs to be a gap of 500mm between the shower head and the base of the cistern for a positive head shower pump to work properly. A negative head shower pump meanwhile, can work without the helping hand of gravity, and is therefore more flexible and can be used in a greater variety of configurations of water system.
