Robert Steele and Son was established in 1954 by Robert Steele as a homegrown sawmill and coal merchants. In 1970 Robert’s son, William, took over and in 1988 established Glenalmond Timber Company (GTC) to diversify into construction products.

GTC began importing Canadian timber and using existing sawmill facilities to prepare imported structural and non-structural sections for the Scottish construction market. Within 6 months GTC’s imports were out selling the home grown business. Over the next 5 years GTC invested in innovative equipment, e.g moulders and low pressure treatment tanks.
