Tortillas are easy to make once you know how – we're not joking when we say they'll be done in under five minutes – and often work out much tastier than anything you might pick up in a store. Have a go at making your own if you're keen to enjoy fajitas, quesadillas, enchiladas, and more.

The beauty of tortillas is that you can pack them with whatever you have hanging around in the fridge. Whether that's a solo chicken breast, or slice of steak, a load of leftover veggies that can be seasoned and roasted in the oven, half a tin of chickpeas, tinned tuna and sweetcorn, or a chunk of cheese.

All you'll need to get started is some self raising flour, warm water, salt and olive oil. Keep scrolling to discover how to make tasty tortillas. Or, check out more of our favourite bread recipes.

How to make tortillas

Ingredients:

  • Self-raising flour, 400g
  • Warm water, 300ml
  • Salt, a pinch
  • Olive oil, a good glug

Method:

1. Place your flour and salt to a bowl, ensuring they're combined. At the same time, combine your oil and water in a measuring jug.

2. Pour your liquid mixture into the bowl containing dry ingredients and mix until you achieve a dough-like consistency.

3. Lightly dust your surface with flour, then remove your dough from the bowl and knead gently for a couple of minutes.

4. Split your dough into sections – this mixture should make around eight large tortillas, or 12 small ones. Use a rolling pin to achieve your desired shape and size.

5. Add a good glug of olive oil to your frying pan and heat to a medium temperature. Then, add each of your tortillas to the pan, in turn, cooking for around a minute, or until golden brown in colour.
