When we think of healthy breakfast ideas the first thing that springs to mind is bran flakes and their delightful (not) cardboard texture. After all, eating healthily is supposed to be a painful experience, right? Wrong. In fact, we'd go as far as to say that some of our favourite breakfast are primarily delicious, and are only actually healthy by default. And who doesn't like the sound of that....

From healthy pancakes – yes, that's absolutely possible – to balanced and protein rich breakfast ideas and ideas for those who need to eat breakfast on the go, we've got three easy ideas for you to enjoy this week, and beyond.

Check them out below, then head over to our food hub for more recipe ideas and inspiration.

Healthy breakfast ideas

Pancakes

Vegan pancakes

You may associate pancakes with a 'treat' breakfast or brunch, but made the right way  they can actually be surprisingly healthy. All you'll need are a few ingredients to get started: bananas, plain flour, baking powder, oat milk and a sprinkle of cinnamon. And from there you can opt for some healthy toppings – we love fresh fruit, greek yoghurt, a little maple syrup, or a dollop of peanut butter (opt for a brand that's just peanuts, not one loaded with salt and sugar) – and you're away.

Banana pancakes

These banana pancakes have the wonderful texture of an American-style pancake but are gluten-free and packed with nutrients. We're obsessed.

Avocado

Avocado toast

A favourite amongst millennials, avocado toast offers a healthy balance of carbohydrates for slow burning energy and good fats which are especially important for women to ensure they're getting enough of. Plus, we can all agree that it's pretty delicious.

Prepare at home, at work, or even enjoy the go – yes we have been known to pre-toast our bread and mash our avocado in a tupperware box while out and about.

Oats

Overnight oats

In a nutshell, overnight oats are rolled oats that have been soaked in your milk of choice, – overnight and in the fridge – which in essence cooks them, deliciously so. In our opinion, they're possibly the most underrated breakfast of all time. Why? They're so simple to prepare, they cost nada and they will keep you fuller for longer than any breakfast bar or slice of toast would do.

How to make porridge

For some of us, porridge is the go-to breakfast for cold mornings. For others, it's a reminder of childhood breakfasts that were, shall we say, not our top choice. The truth is, though, that breakfast is one of the healthiest breakfast options out there, and it's really easy to make more interesting with fresh fruit and cream/plant milk of your choice. Here's how to make the best porridge ever.

Slow cooked porridge

This filling, nourishing breakfast is so easy to make in a slow cooker – and best of all you can press 'go' before you go to bed and wake up to find it's ready to eat before you dash out of the door.

How to make vegan porridge

The best thing about vegan porridge is that the milk substitutes available nowadays are so versatile, ranging from indulgently creamy options to simple, fresh alternatives. For this reason, we're of the opinion that you can't really beat a vegan porridge...

Smoothies

Smoothie recipes

Whether you're looking to use up leftover fruit and veg before it goes off, want a healthier alternative to the biscuits you keep reaching for (not that there's anything wrong with that), or simply want to increase your vitamin and mineral intake for improved health, there's never been an easier way to enjoy fruit and veg in large quantities.

Smoothie bowl

Smoothie bowls are a slightly more filling alternative to your traditional smoothie, but are still light enough to enjoy as the weather warms up. Plus, they're quick to prepare and are a great way to start your day with plenty of fruit and veg. Which is probably why we saw them all over Instagram last summer.
