The beauty of our flapjacks recipe is how adaptable it is. As long as you have the simple base of oats, butter, brown sugar and golden syrup or honey, you can add pretty much anything you have hanging around to the mix. We love dried fruit, chopped nuts or chocolate chips, but you could try adding bits of fresh fruit, raisins, ginger, or anything else you fancy.

And once they're ready, your flapjacks will make the perfect afternoon snack. Or, if you go down the slightly healthier route, they could even work as a quick breakfast idea. Store them in an airtight container and they'll last for up to a week, though you'll probably have eaten them before then...

Ingredients:

  • Oats, 300 grams
  • Butter, 175 grams
  • Brown sugar, 175 grams
  • Golden syrup or honey, 3 tablespoons
  • Optional: chopped nuts, dried fruit, fresh fruit, chocolate chips, yoghurt drops, ginger, or anything else you have to hand.

Method:

1. Combine your oats, butter, brown sugar and golden syrup or honey in a bowl. You can choose between stirring the mixture manually, or using an electric mixer.

2. Once all the key ingredients are combined, you can think about whether you wish to add any extras such as chopped nuts, dried fruit etc. If not, jump straight to step three.

3. Transfer your mixture into a lined baking tray and spread out evenly.

4. Place in the oven at 200ºC/180ºC fan oven/gas mark 6 for around 15 minutes, or until golden brown. Once cooled, chop into small squares for serving.
