Teak: Wood is a go-to material for your home décor, so why should the best outdoor furniture be any different? But, out of all the wood species available, teak is best suited for outdoor use. The magic lies in a naturally occurring oil, which can reportedly repel water as well as prevent warping and cracking. Thanks to its high oil content and low maintenance, teak is designed to last a long time.
However, teak tends to make for an expensive investment. As such, woods like eucalyptus and acacia have grown quickly in popularity for use in outdoor furniture. They aren't quite such hardwearing options as teak, but they're still plenty weather-resistant, especially when kept topped up each year with a protective coat of wood preservative.
Metal: When it comes to your backyard, you really can't go wrong with metal. Not only does this industrial material look cool, but it's also incredibly durable, meaning it'll hold up nicely over time. That said, it's important to get a little picky about the type of metal you add to your e-cart. For a low-maintenance and durable option, aluminum makes the best investment. Unlike other metals, aluminum doesn't rust when exposed to water, and, unlike some wood species, it won't crack or warp when exposed to the elements and doesn't need any upkeep.
However, just like teak, aluminum is expensive. The more affordable option for metal outdoor furniture is powder-coated steel. Untreated steel will rust quickly when exposed to water, but a powder-coated or galvanized finish gives it weather-resistant protection. That does mean you'll need to take a little more care not to chip the coating, and powder-coated steel furniture will last longer if covered or stored indoors during inclement weather, as moisture can still penetrate weak points at joints or fixings.
Synthetic Resin: As much as we love the look of natural wicker and rattan, those woven wares can fade when exposed to too much sunlight and need protection from moisture. For a long-lasting alternative, synthetic resin, which is typically made with nylon, polyethylene, and PVC is a manmade material that's lightweight and durable, but it can also be fashioned into a wicker-like weave. That way, you can have the look of your favorite material — minus the drawbacks. Just pay attention to the frame it's woven around; aluminum will be the most weather-resistant, whilst powder-coated steel will need more protection from the elements.

In her eyes, it’s best to put on your practical hat when it comes to buying garden furniture. “Consider the boring bit! Spend some time researching the frame or base of the furniture you are buying. When shopping for outdoor furniture, it’s essential to consider the quality of both the frame and the top layer. It’s what’s underneath that counts for a lot when it comes to quality,” she told us.
In terms of all-around weatherproof furniture, Kris would opt for aluminum. “Aluminium does not rust, ensuring longevity and durability of your outdoor furniture. Additionally, Aluminum is lightweight, which makes it easy to move around and transport, while still maintaining strength and stability.”
But if you’re looking for something that’s stylish right now, why not consider rope or other woven fabrics? Kris told us, “Rope is a really popular trend for Summer 2023. Look out for what the actual rope is made of. If it’s real rope then make sure it is Marine grade rope which means it can withstand the elements, or if it is a poly-based rope then it should be UV safe and weatherproof otherwise it’s not going to cope with being left outside.” So, there you have it!
