Timber patio doors for period properties

With advances in door design and manufacture, the extensive choice of patio door designs can be almost overwhelming. Then there is the choice of which material – timber aluminium, composite or uPVC?

In this article we explore the warmth, beauty and value that different timber patio door designs can add to period properties, from traditional cottages and barn conversions to Victorian terraces.

Classic timber French doors

The original patio door, timber French doors provide a timeless and traditional feature to effortlessly tie your home and garden together. Allowing more light into a room than single and stable doors, French patio doors are ideal for homes that have smaller openings, as is the case for many period cottages and Victorian terraces. However, if room allows you can incorporate additional glazed sidelights and fanlights to the side of and above the doors themselves, letting even more light into the home.

For traditional detailing, you may wish to consider the integration of astragal bars and period, wrought iron door furniture. But French Doors are not just confided to traditional refurbishments. If you are considering a more contemporary upgrade, seek the advice of a timber door manufacturer who can incorporate modern features into the design, such as linear stainless steel door furniture, dual colour coating and sandblasted glazing.

Timber bi-fold doors

Bi-fold doors allow a seamless connection with the outside. This type of patio door manufactured from timber is a popular addition to extensions on terraced or semi-detached Victorian properties. Whilst modern in functionality, the timber frame does not conflict with the existing fabric of period properties.

Timber bi-fold doors are not just restricted to new extensions. Doors that are finished in a heritage paint colour, or a traditional stain, can open-up any existing living space without compromising the character of a property when closed.

Timber sliding doors

The great advantage of sliding patio doors is the extent of uninterrupted glass that they allow when closed, resulting in increased natural light and an unobstructed view of the outside. Whereas timber bi-fold and French patio doors are more suited to those homes wishing to remain sympathetic to period features, sliding doors are perfect for those homeowners looking to add a contemporary twist. Consequently they are more suited to modern ‘statement’ extensions where the homeowner still desires the natural warmth and beauty that timber can bring.

Timber tilt and sliding doors

Even outward opening French doors can be problematic for those homes with limited space. In these situations homeowners should consider tilt and sliding door designs. A perfect space saving solution, tilt and sliding doors are especially suited to Juliet balconies. They open up the room with natural light when closed and can provide secure ventilation without having to slide the entire door.
