How to cook mushrooms on the hob
Cooking mushrooms on the hob is the method that most people adopt as it's quick, easy and yields pretty delicious results. Particularly if you're preparing your mushrooms to be served on toast, or as a side to breakfast, lunch or dinner.
We'd recommend cooking your mushrooms in a mixture of butter and olive oil for the best results. But, you could choose just the butter or the olive oil depending on your preferences. Discover how below:
1. You'll need to begin by preparing your mushrooms. We'd recommend opting for slightly chunkier pieces as mushrooms do tend to shrivel up slightly when cooked.
2. Melt a small amount of butter and/or a glug of olive oil in a pan and allow to reach a relatively high temperature. At this point we'd also recommend adding some crushed garlic, salt and pepper to the pan.
3. Add your mushrooms to the pan and ensure they're suitably covered in the garlic and butter mixture.
4. Allow to cook slowly over a medium heat for around five minutes, or until they're begun to achieve a golden brown finish. Serve immediately.
How to grill mushrooms
You may opt to grill your mushrooms if you're looking for a slightly healthier alternative that calls for no butter and only a small amount of olive oil. It's especially worth considering if you're working with Portobello mushrooms. And you'll still achieve tasty results providing you follow the steps below:
1. Place your mushrooms (we'd recommend whole, though you can slice them if you desire) onto a baking tray with a brush of olive oil and plenty of salt and pepper.
2. Place on a medium grill for five or so minutes, until golden brown in colour.
3. Once satisfied, tun over and repeat the process on the other side.
How to cook mushrooms in the oven
Roasted mushrooms might be the unsung hero of the mushrooms world. Not only do they call for minimal effort, they're also super easy to season and the results are packed full of flavour. Here's everything you need to know:
1. Place your mushrooms – chopped or not, the choice is yours – in a baking tray with a small amount of olive oil for fifteen minutes at 200ºC.
2. Once the time is up, drain off any liquid that may have appeared in the baking tray and cover your mushrooms with plenty of herbs – we'd recommend rosemary – along with crushed garlic, salt and pepper.
3. Return to the oven for another ten to fifteen minutes. Serve immediately.
How to cook mushrooms in the microwave
If you don't have an oven, or are really pressed for time, it's also possible to cook mushrooms in the microwave. Here's what we'd recommend doing:
1. Place your mushrooms – whether you slice them up or not is up to you – in a microwaveable bowl and cover with a plate.
2. Cook in the microwave for two to three minutes, stirring half way through, until they're suitably softened and ready to enjoy.
