Whether you’re inventive or prefer to stick to the classic combinations, there’s no doubt that juicers and smoothie makers are amazing ways to pack in as many of your five-a-day as possible. There is a significant difference between the two, so you should assess your preferences before you go out and buy one.

Which to buy: smoothie maker or juicer?

If you love light, fresh juice with no pulp, then you should go for a juicer, as it removes all the fibre and the pulp of whichever fruit and/or veg you’ve popped in – that makes it a good option for fussy kids, too. However, if you like the fullness of a smoothie – like a healthy breakfast drink – a machine that simply blends and pours will do the trick nicely. Now, technically, keeping the pulp in with a blender is in-line with 'doctors orders' as the fibre in fruit and vegetables holds many of the nutrients, but if that's not for you then a juice extractor might be your best bet.

While smoothie makers and blenders are pretty simple contraptions, juicers require a lot more thought in their processing ability to ensure you’re left with a silky smooth juice to have with your morning bowl of cereal. Our list features two types of juicer - one that uses centrifugal force (think back to your science lessons on this one guys) and one that uses mastication- that’s mimicking the way our teeth chew to you and us.

If you are looking to go on a health kick but you’re not sure whether you’ll stick at it or not, a smoothie maker or blender is a much cheaper way of getting your fruit and veg count in. While juicers, because of their advanced technology, lean a little (or a lot) towards the expensive side. Be careful to consider style and performance when you select the best juicer or smoothie maker for you; if you are an early riser, many blenders can make a lot of noise so to avoid waking the family you might want to consider blending the night before and storing your smoothie in the fridge. If you are trying to control portion sizes, juicers such as the Braun Multiquick 5 Juicer in our list are ideal for popping pieces of fruit through the juicer one at a time, whilst other blenders make result in you filling the jug to the max only to find there is heaps of smoothie left over.

This juicer works in the same way, separating juice from the pulp and extracting all the elements you need for a nutritional drink. With this machine, you can manage how much pulp remains in your juice, changing it up from clear juice to a thicker more smoothie-like consistency. With its large feeding tube, you can pop in whole apples (stalks removed) and other large foods, allowing for time-effective juicing.

Reasons to avoid
- Slow

If you’re looking to get the most juice for the amount of fruit you put in, this juicer does the job nicely. While running slower than a centrifugal juicer, the way in which the device grinds and clenches the contents releases as much juice as possible without damaging the nutrients within it. If you like to juice wheatgrass and other fiddly ingredients like nuts, this machine does an efficient and quiet job of processing them. The kind of juice you create using a masticating juicer, for the juice pro, will have a slightly richer flavour and at half the price, you really can’t go wrong.
