Console tables can make a stylish and functional addition to your hallway; from making the most of the space to providing a place to store your keys

Console tables are pieces of furniture that seem almost as old as time, earning their rightful place as a staple element to any hallway. After all, aside from a doormat, rug, mirror, and a couple of pictures, you’re fairly limited when it comes to decorating your hallway.

Traditionally, it’s a table that is placed either to the side or in front of your door as an integral hallway idea. It was a place, and still is a place for some, to plug in the best landline phone and store the little book of numbers. It is also a place to pop your keys, store magazines, or any other odds and ends that don’t quite have a place anywhere else.

Thankfully, the rickety square design regularly seen in our grandparents' houses is something that’s firmly rooted in the past. These days, the amount of detail that goes into the design of a console table is as much as a grand table that takes pride of place in your dining room. There are all sorts of designs available, from traditional wooden designs that offer warmth and character, to modern statements that speak to your guests as soon as they walk through the door.

Among our mix of the best console tables for hallways, we have options for the style-conscious, the space-conscious, and the storage-conscious, so you’re sure to find the perfect furniture fit for your home.

'When you've sorted some expert ways to decorate a console table, a hallway console table can give guests a sense of your interior style and add a lovely, lived-in quality to your home,' says Nadia McCowan-Hill, resident style advisor, Wayfair (opens in new tab).

'We recommend hanging a wall mirror above your hallway console table – it'll not only fill the empty space above the table, but it will also give you a place to touch up your appearance before leaving the house.'

A beautiful console table is often the cornerstone to an entryway or luxury lounge, reclining against the wall and tying the space together,' says Linda Holmes, Interiors Director at LuxDeco (opens in new tab).

'With considered curation, a simple console can become the platform for your most treasured ornaments and artwork. And, when it’s a product of exquisite craftsmanship and opulent materials, the console is a feature in itself.'
