How to buy the best modern sofa bed

How often will it be used as a sofa or bed?
If it's to be used more as a sofa, cushion comfort and upholstery durability will be your primary concerns. Used regularly as a bed, you don't want to just think mattress comfort, but how easy it is to pull out and put away, too.

How comfortable is the mattress?
For occasional overnighters you don't need to go to town, but a good quality (for example, memory foam) mattress will give guests bed-like comfort they'll welcome and will help the bed cope with frequent use.

How many sleepers?
Comfort isn't just about the surface but the elbow room, too. So, check the proportions of the sleep surface.

After a compact but still super stylish modern sofa bed? We reckon the Helena sofa bed could be the one...

Why we like it

Fabric choice: we love the range of colours and fabrics; you have a finish to suit every style, from teal velvet to a grey textured weave.

Sofa design: the curved design is unique enough that it makes a bit of a Mid-century statement, but it will easily fit in with most existing furniture styles. The back cushion is fixed (so will need added throw cushions to be truly welcoming) and the seat cushions are made of foam, which means no plumping.

Sofa bed mechanism: the pull out mechanism is easy to use and once out creates a spacious sleeping area that matches a classic double bed.

What to watch for

The mattress isn't the thickest, but that can easily be sorted with a mattress topper (check out our pick of the best). Also just be aware that there is no warranty on Made.com furniture.

Reasons to avoid

Got a large family? Or maybe you just like plenty of room when you are lounging about? The Arlo sofa bed from John Lewis comfortably seats three and expands into a very spacious sofa bed...

Why we like it

Sofa design: the retro, Mid-century-esque design of this sofa bed is what caught our eye. Its tapered wooden legs, low seating and gently curved sides are so on trend at the moment, but a pretty rare look in a larger sofa, so this is a great option if you want that vibe but still need a sizeable guest bed space.

The cushions are foam, FYI, which means no plumping.

Comfortable mattress: this sofa bed isn't all style and no substance. Despite being just 6cm like our first pick, the mattress is pocket sprung, so you know your guests are going to be comfy. Plus unlike a lot of sofa beds, the bed itself is a mix of webbing and slats so it's also super supportive.

Extra storage space: as well as having the space to seat three people and sleep two, there is still room for storage. The chaise opens up to provide the perfect space for hiding away spare bedding.

What to watch for

The sofa covers are fixed, which means you can't remove them to wash them. This needn't be a deal breaker, but if you have young children or pets, it's worth knowing in advance.

3. Maisons du Monde Roma sofa bed

Best modern sofa bed for larger families

Specifications
Seats: six **Sleeps:** two
Filling: foam and feathers
Type of bed: fold out
Colours available: 6
Size: H88cm x W255cm x D257cm (sofa); L135cm x W185cm x D6cm (mattress)
Reasons to buy
+Limited colour choice
Reasons to avoid
-Takes a lot of plumping

You just can't go wrong with a grey sofa bed and one of our faves is the roomy six seater Roma sofa bed from Maisons du Monde...

Why we like it

Roomy and stylish: it's not often you find such a huge sofa bed that still looks really stylish and isn't too cumbersome.

Comfy seat and comfy sleep: the seat cushions have a foam core that's surrounded by feathers so it's comfy but will mostly keep its shape; the back cushions are a mix of feather and shredded polyether foam to add to the relaxed, but not too squashy look. The bed folds out easily enough, and all those cushions means that this makes for a really cosy sleep space.

Fully removable covers: if you've got a big family, then having totally removable 100 per cent cotton sofa covers (frame and cushions) will be such a blessing. Dinner down the cushions? Red wine on the armrest? Just whip it all off and you can have it dry cleaned.

What to watch for

That's a lot of cushions to be plumping, so just be aware that while part of this sofa's charm is its relaxed, laid back look, the cushions are going to lose some of their shape. So, if you prefer a formal look, go for all-foam cushions. Plus we are slightly disappointed with the range of colours, but if you are a fan of neutrals this shouldn't be a problem.

Love grey living rooms? Oh, look at that, we have a whole piece dedicated to them, so make sure you go and check that out too.

Reasons to buy
+Unique design +Affordable
Reasons to avoid
-Not the most comfortable

If you are after a modern sofa bed that makes a statement, check out the Kota sofa bed from Habitat...

Why we like it

Unique style: a distinctive budget sofa bed that's definitley going to be the focus of your living room, especially if you go for that funky orange colour (it comes in more demure black and grey, too).

Good price: this model is only £395! And it's in the Habitat sale right now for just £316.

Easy to use mechanism: Unlike the other sofa beds we have included in our round up so far, this has a click clack mechanism which means the back folds down to create the mattress. Obviously this has its positives – easy to use, takes up less space, plus these sofa bed types are usually cheaper, but just be aware that click clack models are usually less comfortable and smaller than pull and fold out sofa bed mechanisms.

What to watch for

While we do the love the look of the all over buttoning, it does mean it might not be the most comfortable night's sleep, especially for light sleepers. Our advice? Keep a decent mattress topper on hand – see our pick of the best.

Dunelm Taylor sofa bed

5. Dunelm Taylor sofa bed

The best budget modern sofa bed

Specifications
Seats: three **Sleeps:** two
Filling: foam
Type of bed: click clack
Colours available: 2
Size: H90 x W208 x D82cm (bed) ; L190cm x D112cm (mattress)
Reasons to buy
+On trend design +Budget friendly
Reasons to avoid
-Button back makes it less comfy

If you are hunting for the best modern sofa bed on a budget, Dunelm have so many great options but we went for the Taylor sofa bed as our favourite.

Why we like it

Affordable: well, the price obviously was a big plus; this sofa bed is only £359! And we think it looks way more expensive than that – it's definitely a dupe for a West Elm or Swoon sofa that have been on our lust lists for ages.

On trend shape: the shape and those bolster cushions are bang on trend and you can also remove the arms too, if that would suit your space better.

Easy to use mechanism: the click clack mechanism is really straightforward to use and despite the sofa itself looking slimline, it opens up into a spacious 190cm x 112cm bed (small double).

What to watch for

Like with the Habitat sofa bed, you have the issue of the buttons not being the most comfortable to sleep on, but you can always rectify that with a mattress topper.

John Lewis Kix sofa bed in a box

6. John Lewis Kix Double sofa bed

The best modern sofa bed for the smallest of spaces

Specifications
Seats: one/two **Sleeps:** two
Filling: foam
Type of bed: fold out
Colours available: 2
Size: H41 x W120 x D60cm
Reasons to buy
+Cheap+Really compact
Reasons to avoid
-It's not the best for sitting on

If you are after a modern sofa bed that you could store in the corner of your spare room, home office or even under the stairs, the Kix sofa bed from John Lewis is perfect.

Why we like it

Compact design: while not technically a sofa bed, more a bed in a box, we really liked the idea of the Kix. It comes in two sizes, single and double, and is a great option if you need a spare bed and spare seating for guests but don't need a full-on sofa bed in your living room.

Removable cover: we also loved that you can easily remove the cover and bung it in the washing machine on a slow spin.

Super light: this 'sofa bed' weighs just 10kg and has two handles on either side that make it really easy to drag around your home into whatever room it's need, not something you could do with a proper sofa bed.

What to watch for

We can't really fault the Kix. There aren't many colour options, just light grey and dark grey, but that does mean they will suit most styles – and if you wanted to you could always chuck a throw over.

Reasons to avoid
-On the expensive side

If you are looking to invest in a really good quality sofa bed and have a bit more of a budget to spend, consider the Floppy Jo Sofa Bed by Loaf...

Why we like it

Very comfortable seat: the name alone suggests that this is going to be a super comfy sofa bed and it doesn't disappoint on that front. It's got lovely extra-deep seats that are feather wrapped foam so you literally just sink into them.

Luxurious mattress: the mattress is equally comfy: it's pocket sprung and made of cotton felt and foam so feels almost like sleeping in a normal bed.

Simple mechanism: the mechanism is a doddle to use and we love that when the bed is tucked away this just looks like a gorgeous, squishy sofa.

10 year guarantee: all Loaf sofas come with a 10 year guarantee plus delivery is maximum £30, and they even take away all the packaging for you.

What to watch for

Obviously, this is designed to look relaxed, so it will lose its shape over time and you will have to plump up the cushions every now and then.
