Christmas is almost here, which of course means spending time with family, giving and receiving presents, and lots of laughter, but for the chef in your household, it also means the stress of cooking a huge meal for expectant guests.

Whether you're cooking for four people or 14, a helping-hand in the kitchen is never a bad thing, right? So, you'll love that Alexa-enabled devices now work with the BBC Good Food recipe app.

A brand new feature for Alexa, you can now ask your device for a recipe and you'll be offered a full range of BBC Good Food cooking suggestions, from turkey recipes to mince pies and even Yorkshire puddings. Once you've chosen, you can ask Alexa to read the ingredients out for you while you prep, by saying 'Alexa, what ingredients do I need?' or 'Alexa, let’s start cooking'.

Alexa can also play music in the background to get you in the festive mood and, while cooking, you can ask questions you're unsure about regarding the recipe, cooking time, unit conversions or ingredient substitutions (we've all been there).

The best part is that if you're cooking (or baking) lots of things at once, you can set several different labelled timers, for example, one for the boiling veg, another for the Yorkshire puddings in the oven and the next for the roast potatoes. All you need to say is 'Alexa, set a 15 minute Yorkshire pudding timer’.

And, if you're getting low on a particular ingredient, thanks to Amazon Fresh, you can ask Alexa to re-order it for you, saving a hurried trip to the shops the next day.

Why not give these commands a try? (the mince pie one is our favourite, and so easy!):

  • 'Alexa, give me a mince pie recipe'
  • 'Alexa, do you have a chicken recipe?'
  • 'Alexa, give me a salmon recipe'
  • 'Alexa, how do you cook chocolate brownie?'
  • 'Alexa, do you have a recipe for vegan nut roast?'
  • 'Alexa, give me a Yule log recipe'
