The Fine Bedding Company is helping people to rest a little easier when it comes to protecting the environment with a new duvet made from recycled plastic bottles.
On sale in Debenhams from May, its innovative bed cover is made entirely from recycled waste products that would otherwise have ended up in landfill or as debris that could end up in oceans, choking the wildlife.
The dangers of discarded plastic in the seas has been hammered home in series like Blue Planet II. And every second around 1,500 plastic bottles end up in landfill across the world. Once there the bottles can take up to 1,000 years to decompose, leaking pollutants into the surrounding soil and water as they do.
To try and stop this cycle, The Fine Bedding Company’s ECO duvet contains the equivalent to 120 plastic bottles in a medium weight double, spun into soft micro-fine fibres.
And not only is the duvet recycled, so are its fabric cover, cardboard packaging and plastic inner bag. Water-based inks are used in the printing process.
Claire Watkin, managing director of The Fine Bedding Company says: 'We believe this is the first truly 100 per cent recycled duvet, and a pillow is soon to follow.’

The Fine Bedding Company makes its duvets in a factory that gets all of its energy from renewable sources and recycles nearly every scrap of its waste. And by using recycled fibres, it saves enough energy making one 10.5 tog Eco duvet to light 17 60 watt light bulbs for one day.
Helen Johnson, marketing manager for the company, added: 'While we were already developing this product well before, the airing of Sir David Attenborough’s Blue Planet II, heightened consumer awareness of plastic pollution in our oceans and information about it has been a catalyst to manufacturers, retailers and consumers wanting to address the issue of using sustainable products.
'And independent tests show that the Eco duvet is just as good as our best-selling fibre-filled Spundown duvet.’
