Most bed frames come with a headboard built-in, but free-standing and divan beds can often look a little plain without one. Headboards are by no means a necessity in bedrooms anymore, especially not for the structural integrity of your bed, but are certainly an important aesthetic feature when considering your bedroom design.

Headboards hold a certain element of luxury within a bedroom; one of comfort and style that completes your bed and makes it a focal point of the room. Even dating back to Egyptian times, they existed purely for their aesthetic features, and in medieval times were seen as a sign of wealth.

Why have a headboard?

This is not to say they don’t have their practicalities though. A good headboard can protect the paintwork on your walls, and provide a support for sitting up in bed. You can even get storage headboards that provide extra storage for things such as books, newspapers or pillows so you can keep your bedroom space neat and tidy.

Which headboard style to choose?

Whatever you’re looking for in a headboard, you’ll want it to complement your décor, and one of the first things to consider is the type of material you’d like your headboard to be. Wooden and metal headboards can often feature quirky designs and can add a modern, striking look to your bedroom, and are likely to last a long time with little to no maintenance.

Upholstered or leather headboards add a softer, more traditional feel to a bed, but may require cleaning over time, and leather will naturally wear, so consider if that is a style you’re happy with before you make a purchase.

Freestanding, bed- or wall-mounted?

For the most part, headboards are simple to install at home yourself, so the only decision you will need to make is whether you want a freestanding, bed-mounted or wall-mounted one. Freestanding is the easiest option and requires little to no installation whereas wall-mounted and bed-mounted require some DIY and may limit you if you like to move your room around occasionally.

We’ve picked out some of the best headboards to suit all styles, decors and budgets. Have a look and take your pick to add the finishing touches to your bedroom renovations.
