Buying the best hair straightener? Whether your current one is on its last legs or you are treating yourself to an upgrade, we've tried and tested a whole range of straighteners – on lots of different hair types – and have come to a verdict on which ones are worth your money.

When buying a hair straightener, we definitely suggest that you assess your hair type and if it's in need of a little love (and a little less heat) then you should buy one with temperature control. Just an FYI: all GHD hair tools are set at 185º as standard. That and you'll need to consider your new hair straightener's cord length, and the distance from your mirror to your plug socket, as well as whether the hair straightener you desire has an auto shut-off function. Convincing yourself you've left your hair straighteners on after every time you use them is normal, right? Lastly, be sure to consider heat up time – some hair straighteners are ready in minutes, others in just 15 seconds.

Read our ultimate hair straightener guide below for info on the best hair straighteners to buy in 2020. Because having great hair is important, even if you are staying at home. Prefer more volume? Check out our best curling wands guide for our top picks for waving and curling your locks.

How to buy the best hair straighteners

Shape
The main thing when choosing hair straighteners is that you want to avoid damaging your hair with cheap designs or those that overheat your hair. The best models will last for years to come, so it’s worth investing in a pricier model as you do get what you pay for. All straightener plates are flat but it’s the edges you need to check. If the plates and outer edges of the plates are slightly rounded, it will be easier to turn your straightener into a curling iron. A flat iron with sharp edges on the other hand, will be less adaptable but may produce slightly straighter hair.

Plate material and width
These are usually made from ceramic or in some cases, titanium. Titanium heats up quickly, applying higher temperatures more evenly and tend to cost more than ceramic versions. They are recommended for really curly or coarse hair. Ceramic is great value and really effective with even heat that suits most hair types. The wider the plates, the quicker you’ll achieve the result you want.

Temperature
High heat certainly means faster straightening but it’s not ideal for all hair types, so look for a model with variable settings that will reduce damage over time. If not, the ideal temperature for straightening hair is around 185ºC.

Heat up time
While some hair straighteners take only 15 seconds to heat up, others take a minute or maybe even two. Something to bear in mind if you're always in a rush or are impatient.

Auto shut off
For safety purposes, a hair straightener should have an auto shut off mode. Usually, these are between half an hour and one hour. This means that if you leave your hair straightener on, it will automatically turn itself off to prevent burning your surface.

Cord length
Something to bear in mind if your plug socket and mirror are opposite ends of the room. Some hair straighteners are cordless if you can't find a cord that's long enough.
