When will leisure centres reopen? Following guidance released by the government on Sunday to outline the phasing out of lockdown measures, many of us are wondering when we might be able to return to gyms and leisure centres, either to exercise ourselves or to keep the kids occupied.

While the government have actively encouraged exercise throughout the entire lockdown period, this has been limited to running and walking outdoors, or enjoying home workouts from the comfort of your own garden or (for most of us) living room.

And while there have been some changes in guidance relating to the use of sports facilities – we'll outline that more below – gyms and leisures will remain shut for the most part. As such, for now you might still better off investing in the best home gym equipment if you're keen to maintain your regular level of exercise, but read on to find out when you will be allowed back in the gym.

When will leisure centres reopen?

In his statement, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced that 'from Wednesday 13th May, the government will also allow outdoor sports facilities – such as tennis and basketball courts, golf courses and bowling greens – to open, but you should only use these alone, with members of your household, or with one other person from outside your household, while keeping two metres apart at all times.'

To this end, there has been some movement in the sports facilities we'll be able to access. However, this allowance is only likely to be maintained if we use these facilities sensibly and abide by social distancing guidelines.

Gyms, swimming pools and other workout facilities will, however, remain closed, with the plan for phasing out lockdown measures suggesting that they will not open until at least July 4th.

So, for now, your best bet is to stick to your running, walking and home workout regime. If you're looking to make them slightly more challenging, you may find some of the workout essentials listed below a handy addition to your set up.
