Hip to Gable loft conversion

Helen and John Davidson’s loft conversion has transformed their home in Christchurch, Dorset. The old hipped roof has been replaced with a larger gabled roof, and an increased ridge height adds space.

Having already extended at the back of the property, and as the roof was in a bad condition, Helen and John felt that a conversion was more cost-effective than extensive repairs.

The couple used design and build specialist Room Maker for the whole project. ‘The company said we didn’t need a full waterproof scaffold over the entire property, which would have cost £8,000,’ says Helen. ‘Instead they put the new floor in first, then pre-cut the roof, which was built over the old one – this was removed once the new roof was waterproof.’

The project took six weeks and cost £43,000 plus VAT. Planning and regulation fees added around £2,000.

  • BEFORE With an existing extension to the rear of the property and a roof in need of repair, the Davidsons decided that a loft conversion would be a more cost-effective option;
  • AFTER Replacing the hipped roof with a gabled one has resulted in far more useable loft space with full headroom.
