Karen Hibbert shares her tips on creating a luxurious en suite design.

Karen Hibbert, bathroom owner

Fact file

The owners: Karen Hibbert and her husband Martin, both chartered accountants, live here with their two children, Matthew, 17, and Jessica, 15

My top tip

‘I would definitely recommend using a specialist bathroom company that does everything in-house. Getting copies of the agreed detailed CAD designs was really useful, both for us to see how it was going to look and for the fitters to refer to throughout the project. It went so smoothly and we didn’t have any issues. Their years of expertise proved invaluable.’

What I’ve learnt

‘Spending time getting comparable quotes from a couple of bathroom companies gave us a broad depth of different ideas and the latest products available on the market, as well as helping us decide which company to use. It is also very important to agree the exact detail of the layout, fixtures and fittings and decor before work commences.’

My best buy

‘We love the Jacuzzi spa bath and the fact that we can fill it to our individual predetermined temperatures and depths, plus the variety of spa functions makes bathing very relaxing. We hired a hot tub for our daughter’s birthday recently and Martin said he still preferred our bath!’

I couldn’t live without…

‘…the underfloor heating. As we already had it downstairs I knew it would be essential if we were having a tiled floor. It is so warm underfoot first thing in the morning when you walk in.’

My inspiration

‘I spent a lot of time taking photos of hotel bathrooms on holiday. I especially loved the Bellagio in Las Vegas as it’s so luxurious.’

If I did it all again…

‘…I wouldn’t do anything differently. We spent a lot of time planning, discussing and amending the plans before any work started, to make sure that we were both happy, and that investment definitely paid off.’

My favourite spot

‘Standing in our extra-large shower and being able to see the space in all its glory through the glass screen.’
