Here's a really great way to make waffles at this time of year? A great waffle maker is a must, but the success of your waffles will depend largely on getting the measurements right. We strongly advise you to ignore any recipes that call for more than one egg or too much milk: you will more than likely end up with a soggy mess instead of a crisp waffle. The consistency of the batter for waffles should be quite a bit thicker than for pancakes.

How to make waffles

You will need

  • One egg
  • 250 ml full-fat milk
  • 150 grams of plain flour
  • Melted butter, one teaspoon
  • Sugar, two tablespoons
  • Vanilla extract, a few drops
  • Bicarbonate of soda, one teaspoon

1. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the sugar, egg, and milk.

2. Start folding in the flour gently and gradually; keep whisking throughout to get a lump-free batter.

3. Add the melted butter, soda, and a couple of drops of vanilla extract. Less is more with the extract, be careful not to over-flavour.

4. Plug in and switch on your waffle maker. Once hot, pour in your batter and close the waffle maker. Follow instructions for cooking times for your particular make.

Serve with berries and maple syrup, or any topping of your choice.
