An in line conversion of a 1950s bungalow

Carole Johnson created two new bedrooms with a shower room in the loft of her home in Lytham St Annes, Lancashire. She called in architect CFM Consultants and builders Paul and Sam Hellowell to carry out the work, which took six months.

The loft suited a simple in line conversion, but the house was in a poor condition – built on peat with inadequate foundations, the bungalow was moving, so underpinning was required to stabilise it.

The design is in keeping with a simple layout – Fakro rooflights maximise daylight and add emphasis to an oak staircase leading up to the loft. A similar in line conversion would now cost £24,000-£30,000 plus VAT.

Carole chose white rooflights from Fakro to maximise the daylight and take advantage of the views. Two of the rooflights have rain sensors to close them automatically if they’re open when it’s raining.
