Shopping is one of the best parts of decorating a new home. However, HGTV's Jasmine Roth reveals there is a common mistake people often fall for when making their new home shopping list.
Jasmine Roth is no stranger to renovation projects and interior design ideas. She sprung to fame as the host of HGTV's Help I Wrecked My House and Hidden Potential. The HGTV darling specializes in renovation projects, and even runs her own development company, Built Custom Homes. Last year she also published her first book House Story: Insider Secrets to the Perfect Home Renovation.
Speaking exclusively to Real Homes, Jasmine Roth revealed the biggest design mistake she sees people make. While it is tempting to jump headfirst into a renovation project or home makeover, she says that people often neglect the planning stage with disastrous results.
'Oh, this is something I see every day. I see people try to renovate without sticking to a design plan,' says Jasmine. 'They just start buying things they like, with no vision of the "big picture."'
'It’s actually sad because, in the end, everything is new, but nothing feels cohesive,' adds Jasmine. 'Once you have a design style identified, it makes everything easier!'
Whether you are sprucing up your rental or overhauling your first home if you want a home that really stands out it is worth heeding Jasmine's advice. Planning is a crucial step in curating a coherent scheme. There are plenty of smart design planning tools out there, but it can be as simple as creating a Pinterest board or saving images of your favorite living room ideas to build your scheme around.
If you're working with a small budget, following Jasmine's advice could actually save you costly mistakes. Aside from not wasting your hard-earned cash on home decor that doesn't match (in a bad way), it could highlight simple but effective DIY projects you've overlooked.
If you're working with a tight budget Jasmine points out that paint and a new light fixture can be transformative. 'If they had $40, I would say paint and a new light fixture, so you can actually see the fresh paint,' she recommends. 'Lighting makes such a difference.'
So before you make that shopping list remember to plan first!
