We'd be remiss to simply call the Samsung FlexWash our best front-loading washing machine, because it's actually a top-loader, too. The Samsung FlexWash offers two separate washing drums; a top-loading 1cu.ft. drum, and a larger front-loading 5cu.ft. drum, which can be used separately for smaller loads to save energy and water, or in tandem to tackle an extra-large pile of laundry. Combined with quick wash times, a long list of smart features, and a sleek design, this washing machine is easily our top pick.

Large capacity and efficiency

Designed with families, heavy clothing, and bedding in mind, this machine offers a generous 6cu.ft. load capacity for times when laundry threatens to swallow you whole.

Another check in the efficiency column: The bottom washer features a superspeed cycle, which washes a full load in just 30 minutes. Need a clean uniform for the big game that starts in a couple hours? Day saved.

Smart technology

Smart washing machines are a full-blown thing now - and it's something we've looked into to find out whether the features are worthwhile in terms of the added cost. How does this one's work? You can manage your washing machine cycles, temperature, and spin speed from your smartphone, thanks to Samsung's SmartThings app. This innovative smart technology not only enables you to avoid returning home to a machine full of damp smelling clothing, since you can sync up your wash load with the time you'll arrive home, but it can also troubleshoot any minor issues before they become a bigger problem.

Speed & noise level

The FlexWash features anti-vibration technology that reduces cycle vibration by 40 percent. Plus, the motor that works without a belts or gears. What that means for you: a fairly quiet washing machine, even when it's powering through a spin cycle. Speaking of spin cycles, this one will spin your clothes at up to 1300 rpm.

Additional features

The Samsung FlexWash features steam technology that helps penetrate clothes more efficiently, using less water. The steam feature also does a great job at releasing odors and killing allergens.

Finally, we love that the black stainless steel finish is fingerprint resistant. Because who wants to worry about wiping down the washing machine?

Some reviewers complain it's on the loud side

If internet reviewers are to be believed (and in our experience, they're an honest bunch), then the Electrolux EFLS627UTT washing machine is tops. It's got more than 2,500 5-star reviews from Home Depot customers, and 95 of reviewers recommend this model.

So why's it so great?

It cleans like a boss.

It sounds like stating the obvious, but this washing machine is really good at cleaning clothes. Reviewers note that greasy work uniforms, stains kids clothes, and the stinkiest loads of laundry emerge looking fresh and revived.

The washer's SmartBoost feature premixes water and detergent beforehand for optimal stain-fighting, and it has steam clean technology to loosen stains and odors. One of our favorite features though has to be the stain soak function, which premixes water, detergent, and stain remover, and optimized the wash program based on the type of stain you select.

Sanitize cycle

Whether your goal is to kill off any potential trace of a global pandemic or eliminate everyday allergens, this washer's sanitize options gets it done.

Other conveniences?

The detergent dispenses accepts both liquid detergent and laundry pods, and it's got interior lighting. Plus, the door reverses so you can adjust it to open to your preferred side.

Design

At first glance, this Miele washing machine looks just like any other - a white cube with a door. It's not until you switch one on and its touch-screen display springs to life that it really livens up laundry time. Everything is controlled by the touch screen, and the tasteful LED lighting in the drum gives a pleasant view of the gleaming inner stainless steel construction.

Combined with its quiet and efficient ProfiEco motor, this washing machine doesn't cost the earth too as it comes in with incredibly low annual energy costs.

The Miele WWH860WCS W1 doesn't sacrifice performance for size, with one of the fasted spin-cycles of any model we reviewed (1600rpm). One of our favorite features of the washing machine is its TwinDos detergent-dispensing system, which features two integrated laundry detergent containers that automatically dispense the perfect amount of laundry soap for each load. And for that extra little 'boost' to clean or soften, there's Miele’s CapDosing system, which features individually-portioned detergent capsules which are incredibly convenient for specialty laundry applications or adding in a detergent booster.

Fewer feature than Miele

It's kind of amazing how much oomph is packed into this pint-sized washing machine. Although the Bosch 800 series washing machine is only 24" (the same size as our no. 5 best compact washing machine pick from Miele), it can wash five men's dress shirts in just 15 minutes, and has an EcoSilence motor that's extra quiet but still manages to deliver a powerful 1400 rpm (one of the fastest we reviewed).

Eco-friendly, speedy cycles + good wash results

One of the few 24" models that's rated by Energy Star, the Bosch 800 series uses sensor-controlled automatic washing programs and ActiveWater technology to ensure efficient energy and water usage.

Lots of wash cycles

The Bosch 800 series has 14 built-in wash programs that should literally cover any type of laundry you've got. A few highlights: permanent press, quick wash, hand wash/wool,whitest whites, sanitize, and a super quick 15-min wash. It also has a drum cleaning feature.

Gentle on clothes

This is a washing machine with a drum designed to be gentle on your clothes. The washer features a wave-shaped drum, and adjusts its rotation direction based on load type: it uses steeper edges for heavy duty washes, and shallower edges for delicates.

Smart technology

The Bosch 800 uses the brand's Home Connect smart technology, which lets you start your laundry with your phone. Its EasyStart feature also guides you through selecting the best setting for your clothes you don’t have to guess.

How to find the best front load washing machine

Why you can trust Real Homes Our expert reviewers spend hours testing and comparing products and services so you can choose the best for you. Find out more about how we test.

When deciding on the best front-load washing machine for your home, here are a few things you should consider.

Washing machine drum capacity

One of the most important factors to consider is how much laundry your machine will hold. A compact machine, like the Miele or Bosch options featured above, hold just over two cubic feet, making them great picks for singles or couples. Large families, on the other hand, will find that capacity too small. The best washing machines for families will hold at least four cubic feet of laundry, but large families may want to consider five or more cubic feet.

And remember: just because the clothes can physically fit into a washing machine doesn't mean you should run stuff it full. Most washing machines perform best at about half-full.

Dimensions and fit

Generally speaking, most full-size front load washing machines are around the same size, but where you're tucking an appliance into a tight closet or utility room, it's a good idea to get an exact measurement of the space you're working with. That way you'll be 100 percent sure your washer fits when you get it home.

Short on space? Look for a compact front-load washing machine (we listed our two favorites above) which will save valuable inches. Or, check out our list of the best washer-dryers for a two-in-one options.

You'll also want to make sure that the direction the door swings open works for the setup of your space. Some front-load washing machines have fixed doors, while others are reversible.

Finally, one of the biggest conveniences of front-loaders is that they're stackable, but not all are, so check before you buy. And note, you'll have to stack your dryer on top of your washer.

Noise & vibration

If you live in an apartment building or multi-family home, or your washing machine is in a conspicuous place, you'll want to choose a machine with built-in noise reduction systems. Most major appliance brands offer their own version of low-vibration or noise-reduction technology, but you typically won't find it across the board on lower-end models. If a quiet washing machine is something that's important to you, it's work looking into and possibly paying up for.

Cycle options

Your washing machine should also offer cycle options that suit your lifestyle. For allergy sufferers, for example, many machines feature sanitize options that kill most common allergens. Or, if you're a yoga devotee (or a yoga pants devotee), there are also machines out there that offer active wear cycles. Prefer simplicity and know you won't use all of the specialty programs? Then skip 'em and get a machine with just a few straightforward options. With so much to choose from these days, you might as well find one that makes your home more efficient.
