A wood floor is a serious investment and will last a lifetime – and longer – if it’s cared for properly. Just a few simple rules need to be followed if you want to keep it looking as good as new. Firstly there are some important preventative measures to be taken. Dirt and grit walked in underfoot will scratch the surface, so a large doormat is always a good idea if people or pets walk straight on to the floor from outside. Try and make it large enough to capture two foot steps and keep it shaken and clean. Other measures include trimming pets’ claws and using protective pads under chair legs.

The most important cleaning job is regular sweeping which will also keep the surface clear of scratchy particles. Well used floors should be swept every day if possible. Damp cleaning need only take place if there are marks or spillages. Steam cleaners are not suitable for wood floors as the hot steam is pushed between the joints and can cause the wood to move or swell. Use minimal liquid to clean the floor, either a well wrung out cloth or mop or our Bona Spray Mop. Always choose a cleaner that is specially made for wood floors, avoid wax, vinegar or all-purpose cleaners as they can dull the surface finish.

Our Spray Mops are ideal as they spray just enough cleaner on to the surface to loosen any dirt then wipe it away immediately – leaving a clean, dry surface. Our standard spray mop is ideal for most types of wood and other hard surfaces such as laminate or vinyl but, if you floor has been finished with oil, then make sure you choose our ‘Spray Mop for Oiled Floors’ which contains a slightly different cleaner in the refillable cartridge which will replenish the lustre of the oiled surface as you clean it.

Other Bona maintenance products such as ‘refreshers’ and polishes are also available to protect the surface and should be used periodically to prolong the time needed between re-sanding and finishing. However if you do need to renovate the floor, always choose an experienced company that specialises in wood floor renovation and employs well trained craftsmen.
