We've spent a fair bit of time in the John Lewis lighting department this morning, probably because we actually had to turn on a light this morning for the first time in six months. A nice little reminder that summer is over and winter is a coming.
But we are trying something new this year and not going to spend all of September mourning for warmer climes. Instead, we're going to embrace the change in seasons, embrace the shorter days, embrace the Pumpkin Spice everything and (of course) embrace lovely cosy interiors.
So to practise what we preach, we've found the most gorgeous John Lewis lighting from their latest range and come up with some rather clever ways you can use it to give your home and autumnal update...
1. Mix dark lighting into a soft neutral palette

Ooohh this is a bit of alright, this is. We are obsessed (as is everyone else, if Instagram is anything to go by) with incorporating strong black elements into that lovely neutral, soft, Scandi look. It just gives a space an edge and stops it looking too... subdued. Lighting is the perfect way to do this, and something like this arched floor lamp has everything – strong lines, sculptural design and it's super slimline so despite being dark it won't overpower all those muted hues.
2. Go for a classic glass pendant lights
Glass pendant lights are never going to go out of style. They are just so versatile – gorgeous over a kitchen island, a dining table or hung either side of bed for an alternative to a bedside lamp. There are loads of options over at John Lewis so go and get inspired.
3. Create ambience with a load of side lights
The last thing you want in the morning is to burn your poor bleary eyes out with a glaring overhead light. Ease yourself into the day with plenty of side lights, they will give a much softer, more sleep deprived-friendly glow. You can't go wrong with a classic Anglepoise, pop it on a sideboard in your hallway, living room or even kitchen for an instant stylish update. (Pssst... if you are looking for something a bit cheaper, John Lewis have there own version for sixty quid).
4. Update your lampshades for a budget friendly solution
If you just want a quick, easy update, switching up your lampshades could be all you need to make your space feel cosier. These new linen lampshades from John Lewis come in an array of gorgeous autumnal colours and start from just £30
5. Make getting up a bit easier with a wake up light
If you really struggle to get out of bed on these dark mornings (we hear you, us too) and even a soft side light won't cut it, think about investing in a wake up light. Basically they work by replicating the sunrise and bring you out of your sleep, gently and gradually. Sounds way better than the frustratingly upbeat jingle we currently have set as our alarm.
We love the Lumie Bodyclock, because not only does it look pretty, it's also got a whole lot of sleep science behind it that we think makes it the best model out there. If you want any more info or to find out our pick of the best wake up lights, head over to our buying guide.
