Live in a hard water area? You’ll likely be familiar with the unfavourable effects of limescale on your kitchen, bathroom, appliances and possibly even your hair and skin. But, you don’t have to put up with hard water, forever. And you may be surprised how a simple change in water type can make everything from cleaning your home to paying your bills a little easier. So, we’ve teamed up with Harvey Water Softeners to talk about the perks of trying softened water in your home. Here’s what we learned...

1. Make cleaning easier

While there are lots of handy tips and tricks for tackling limescale in the home, imagine a world where you didn’t have to think about descaling appliances, or tackling limescale ever again. Well folks, it’s easier than you might think. Switching to softened water (which isn’t affected by limescale) could mean an end to experimenting with vinegar, lemon, baking soda – or more harmful chemicals – in a bid to tackle affected faucets, showerheads, kettles and more. This not only eases day-to-day cleaning, but will keep your bathroom and kitchen looking new for longer.

2. Protect your appliances from limescale

There’s nothing more disappointing than discovering a brand new appliance coated in chalky limescale. And while it’s usually relatively easy to keep tabs on the state of your kettle – especially if you drink as much tea as we do – what’s really alarming is what’s going on inside the depths of your coffee machine, washing machine and dishwasher.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t really matter what lengths you go to in a bid to tackle the limescale you can see, because there will always be areas that can’t be reached. Switching to softened water is not only a step in the right direction, in terms of keeping everything looking new, but will protect your appliances for longer meaning you won’t need to replace them as frequently.

3. Improve your hair and skin quality

But, it’s not just your appliances that are affected by limescale – it can impact your skin and hair, too. If you feel that no matter how frequently you moisturise your skin or condition your hair, it’s still left feeling dry; or if you’re struggling to get a decent lather from your shampoo and shower gel, hard water could be to blame. Switching to softened water is a super easy solution that will soften up your skin and prevent limescale deposits from building up in your hair.

4. Reduce your monthly bills

Did you know that limescale can also build up in your boiler? And that this is one of the main reasons why you may see an increase in your heating bills. According to research undertaken by Harvey Water Softeners, just 1/16 of an inch of limescale coating your boilers heating elements can increase fuel costs by as much as 15%, which is pretty significant. This is particularly relevant in the case of old boilers, which tend to experience a significant build up in limescale over the years. Opting for softened water will not only prolong the life of your boiler, but reduce your bills in the meantime. That’s something we can get on board with.
