What I thought of the Turmerry latex mattress topper

I found the Turmerry latex mattress topper to be highly comfortable and very effective in preventing pressure points. I was able to comfortably sleep on my side and back with no noticeable extra heat buildup. While the topper weighs 30 pounds and was difficult to get into place by myself, those qualities also helped to keep it securely in place, solving the shifting problem that is so common with other types of mattress toppers. 

Knowing that this topper is an eco-friendly product makes me appreciate it even more. It’s crafted from latex from organically grown rubber trees in Sri Lanka, and Turmerry advertises that it plants a tree in your name for every order.

Setting up the Turmerry latex mattress topper

The Turmerry Latex Mattress Topper arrived in a single, plain cardboard box. Since the Queen three-inch topper weighs 30 lbs, the box was awkward and heavy to carry. The topper was tightly wrapped in multiple layers of plastic, and the plastic was then covered in clear packing tape. The box and topper were in excellent condition when they arrived. 

There were no instructions in the box, so I placed the wrapped topper on my bed and tried to use scissors to open the packaging. This was difficult, as the topper was tightly compressed, and there were several layers of tape to cut through. I never found a point where I could pull all of the tape off and then just unwrap the packaging, so I had to cut the entire wrapping off. 

Once unwrapped, I tried to position the topper on my bed, which was also a challenge. The topper has a texture that’s very sticky and grippy against any sort of fabric, so moving and sliding it is a two-person job. I did get the topper into place and was pleased to see that it’s generously sized. Whereas other toppers that I’ve tested have often been a couple of inches too short for my mattress, this topper hung about two inches off of both ends of the mattress. 

After being unwrapped, the topper immediately expanded to its full height, unlike memory foam toppers, which gradually expanded over hours after unwrapping. 

There was a moderate off-gassing smell, but it wasn’t particularly unpleasant. Honestly, I thought it smelled a bit like cookie dough. The smell dissipated quickly, and within two hours I couldn’t smell it when I walked into the room. 

I could smell the odor for the first week while sleeping on the topper, but it was faint and didn’t bother me.

Testing the Turmerry latex mattress topper

Test 1: Firmness and support

I tried the three inch medium firmness topper and found it to be very comfortable, both when sleeping on my side and on my back. I immediately noticed that the topper does an excellent job of relieving pressure points, especially on my knees, ankles, and hips while sleeping on my side. 

While the topper has a soft and cushioned feel to it, I was able to easily roll over onto my back without feeling like I was restricted or sinking in too deeply. According to Turmerry, the topper is constructed with five zones to support the different areas of your body. I can’t necessarily feel a difference in the zones, but I would say that this topper is more supportive than others that I’ve tried, like the Allswell 4” Memory Foam Mattress Topper I reviewed.

Test 2: Motion tranfer

The topper also helps to prevent motion transfer. It’s supportive enough to keep a glass of water upright. I pressed down on multiple points of the topper and didn’t manage to vibrate the water in the glass until I was about 14 inches from the glass. 

That ability to prevent motion transfer would make this topper excellent for couples or people who sleep with their pets in bed. My cats often join me in bed and I wasn’t able to feel or hear them walking unless they were right beside me. 

Test 3: Edge support

While the topper does have a supportive feel to it, it doesn’t offer much in terms of edge support. I can fully compress the edge of the topper with my hand, so it may not be an ideal option for anyone who has difficulty getting out of bed and who relies on pressing on the bed’s edges to lift themselves. 

However, since the topper has a sticky feel to it and grips fabric, I was pleased to find that no matter how much I tried to shift around on the side, I wasn’t able to slide it off the bed, even slightly. I often find that keeping toppers in place is tricky, and they tend to shift around. That’s not the case with this one.  

Test 4: Breathability and coolness

This cooling mattress topper features many quarter-inch perforations that travel through to both sides. I didn’t feel that it was any warmer than my regular mattress. I did test it during the winter, but since the topper is supportive and I didn’t sink deeply down into it, I found it to be fairly breathable.

Cleaning and maintaining the Turmerry latex mattress topper

Turmerry recommends using the best mattress protector you can afford with your topper since a mattress protector can be easily washed. The company also recommends periodically allowing the topper to air out in a well-ventilated area and rotating it at least twice a year. 

According to Turmerry, you can use baking soda (get it cheap from Amazon Fresh) to refresh and deodorize your mattress topper. Spot cleaning with white vinegar (available at Amazon) can help to clean up liquid spills. It’s important to avoid using strong detergents, bleach, and solvents, which can damage the latex foam. 

I was also able to find some basic information on Turmerry’s website, and the site also has some instructions for cleaning a mattress topper.

As a back sleeper, our contributing editor, Rose Cain, commended the Parachute mattress topper. It's marshmallowy-soft, filled with hypoallergenic, vegan-friendly fill (ideal for people who with allergies or asthma), and has a lightweight and breathable cotton sateen shell. 

Though it might appear squishy, this topper will mask all of the sins of an old rental mattress. If you're looking for a deep mattress topper that's cooling and organic — then stop your search. Along with your organic mattress (if you have one), this topper will keep you cool all night long. If you have a mattress that's too firm for you, this is a great buy. 

Our tester Louise used it on her landlord-provided mattress. She's a side sleeper and usually prefers a firmer base, but she noticed that it made her medium-firm mattress feel a lot softer and fresher.

What I thought of the Helix Midnight Mattress

This is the best mattress for stomach sleepers, in my opinion. It has everything you need if you're looking for the Goldilocks of mattresses — not too soft, not too hard. As a stomach sleeper, I found it to be incredibly comfortable with some decent support. The hybrid build of memory foam and gentle springs is a great crowdpleaser. It's squishy but with some extra bounce so you don't feel like you're sinking into the mattress at night. The soft material does run a bit warm in the summertime though, so if you a hot sleeper you may want to consider a cooling mattress instead.

Unboxing the Helix Midnight Mattress

The mattress ships compactly in a box and was pretty easy to assemble as I did it single-handed. It is a bit heavy so you may want a friend's support if you're setting it up yourself. It comes compressed in a few layers of plastic which were a little tricky to get off (make sure you don’t slice or knick the mattress while you’re cutting it off). Everything arrived safe and sound with minimal damage to the box.

What is the Helix mattress like to sleep on?

Firmness

The feel is exactly what I was looking for, ranking 5-6 on the firmness scale. The Goldilocks of mattresses, it's not too soft and not too firm. I was used to a very form mattress (which wasn't the most comfortable) so the soft top layer did take some getting used to but it was delightful.

Pressure relief and support

The first thing I noticed after unboxing the Midnight mattress, was how soft and squishy the top layer on. I was nervous it was going to be too soft for my liking but once I actually laid on the bed I was pleasantly surprised with the supportive spring of the wrapped coil base. I was comfy but completely supported. Overall, it's just the right balance for a stomach sleeper like me. 

Helix claims the mattress provides pressure point relief and while I didn’t suffer any major issues before, I certainly felt comfortable and well-supported with no back pain. My partner, a back and side sleeper, also felt supported and never experienced any pain or discomfort.

Breathability and cooling

The only real downside is the temperature it gets up to at night. I'm quite a warm sleeper and we tested this mattress in the middle of the summer with no air conditioning. So while the environment may have been a factor and a pretty fluffy duvet, I got pretty warm during the night. Helix does offer a GlacioTex™ Cooling Pillow Top cover as an upgrade if this is a concern for you but I have not tested it. 

Motion isolation

The padded memory foam top layers also ensure there is no motion transfer while sleeping. My partner drifts right off as soon as he gets into bed, but I'm much more of a night owl. I can be fidgeting around while reading or watching videos and he never felt jostled or disturbed. 

Edge support

This is a medium-firm mattress made up of five layers. The memory foam top layers consist of Helix Responsive Foam and Memory Plus foam. The body shape layer is made up of 1,000 wrapped coils, which are reinforced lengthwise for edge support. It's all wrapped in a super soft Light Breathe knit cover. The mattress ranks 5-6 on the firmness scale. It's CertiPUR-US® Certified and GREENGUARD Gold Certified, with no fiberglass.

My current wishlist for a mattress topper includes a comfortable surface that’s supportive enough for side sleeping and won’t make me hot at night, and the Zinus Ultra Cool Gel Memory Foam Mattress Topper seemed like it might check all the boxes. It’s made from CertiPUR-US gel-infused memory foam that’s supposed to be supportive for all sleep positions and ideal for temperature regulation, and the topper is available in both 2-inch and 3-inch thicknesses.

However, you can never really know what to expect from mattress toppers until you try them out for yourself. To help you find the best mattress topper for your bedroom, I tested out the Zinus Ultra Cool for a month, and while it definitely wasn’t the product for me, it will be really appealing to certain types of sleepers. 

TLDR: What I thought of the Zinus ultra cool gel mattress Topper

After several weeks of testing, my partner and I agreed to disagree about the Zinus mattress topper. As a back sleeper with an affinity for all things soft and cozy, he couldn’t get enough of the topper’s super-soft, sink-in plushness, and he said it was the best sleep he’s had in months. Me, on the other hand? I found the topper was nowhere near supportive enough to accommodate my side-sleeping habits and struggled to get comfortable most nights. All that to say: It’s definitely a subjective experience. 

Personal preferences aside, the Zinus Mattress Topper does have a lot of great attributes. I tend to sleep warm but I didn’t overheat at night, likely thanks to the topper’s gel memory foam, which is designed for temperature regulation. The topper didn’t produce any weird chemical smells when I set it up, and since I have several pets, I love that the cover can be removed and machine-washed for easy maintenance. 

The only major downside that I found during testing is that the topper shifts around on the mattress, especially if you toss and turn at night. It doesn’t have any straps to hold it in place, and it will definitely migrate around your bed, often taking the fitted sheet with it.

Unboxing the Zinus ultra cool gel mattress topper

The Zinus Mattress Topper arrived in a long, skinny box, and when I stood it up, the package came up to around my waist. While it was fairly large, the box was light enough for me to carry upstairs by myself, and I unpacked it right in my bedroom for the sake of convenience. 

The box says not to open it with a knife, but frankly, I’m not sure how else you’d cut through the packing tape. I opted to cut it open very carefully, being sure to only slice through the tape and not the cardboard. 

The topper was rolled up into a log shape using lots of plastic, and I had to unroll it and cut open the vacuum-sealed bag to get it out. The box also included a strap system that you can use to roll up and store the topper if needed. 

Once I removed the packaging, I spread the topper out on my bed, with the grippy side facing down. It was a bit deflated at first, but the memory foam puffed up to its intended size in around two hours. I was happy to find that the topper didn’t have a weird chemical smell — a common issue with new memory foam products — but it was a few inches smaller than my mattress, so it didn’t fully cover the surface. 

Is the Zinus ultra cool gel mattress topper comfortable?

It may seem like a simple question, but the answer is that it depends. After sleeping on this mattress topper for a month, my partner and I had opposite opinions about its comfort. Nate absolutely loved the plush memory foam surface, which he thought was delightfully cozy. He said it felt like being wrapped up in a hug when he laid down, and he consistently got a great night’s sleep on it. 

My experience wasn’t quite as positive. I solely sleep on my side, and the topper didn’t offer me nearly enough support at my pressure points. I always felt like my shoulder was sinking way too far down, and I often found myself trying to prop myself up in the middle of the night. It felt like trying to climb out of a quicksand hole! 

Because I was wiggling around so much at night, the mattress topper also shifted quite a bit—there aren’t any straps holding it in place—and this generally meant the sheets and topper had to be rearranged each morning. Between the added maintenance and my general discomfort sleeping on it, I couldn’t wait to get the topper off our bed after the testing period was over. 

Motion transfer
Because it’s made from memory foam, the Zinus Mattress Topper is great at minimizing motion transfer during the night. Nate often comes to bed after me, and I never felt him climbing into bed or shifting around as he got comfortable. I was also able to get out of bed most mornings without disturbing him. 

Edge support
The Zinus Mattress Topper doesn’t offer much in terms of additional edge support. If you sit on the edge of it, the memory foam sinks down quickly. Our mattress has good edge support thanks to its hybrid construction, so this wasn’t a problem for us, but if you’re hoping to improve the edge support of your bed, this topper isn’t going to be an effective solution. 

Is the Zinus ultra cool gel memory foam mattress topper breathable and cool?

The Zinus Ultra Cool Mattress Topper isn’t necessarily “cooling,” but it does help with temperature regulation at night. The memory foam feels like, well, regular ol’ memory foam when you lay down on it — it’s not going to provide any type of cooling sensation on warm summer nights, if that’s what you’re looking for. 

However, as someone who sleeps hot, I did find that the topper does a good job regulating body temperature during the night. Regular memory foam tends to get quite toasty when you lay on it for a long time, but the Ultra Cool Topper doesn’t retain as much warmth. I felt comfortable sleeping on it during the summer, and I never woke up in a puddle of my own sweat (which has 100% happened on other memory foam products). 

Is the Zinus ultra cool gel mattress topper right for you?

The Zinus Ultra Cool Gel Memory Foam Mattress Topper isn’t going to be everyone’s cup of tea. The memory foam construction is more plush than it is supportive, which makes it best suited for back sleepers. It may also be a good option if you have a brick-like mattress and are looking for a way to make your sleep surface a little softer. 

This mattress topper is also a solid choice for anyone who sleeps warm. Because it’s infused with gel, the memory foam is more breathable and doesn’t retain body heat during the night. This helps you stay at a comfortable temperature, even on warm summer nights.

The memory foam is wrapped in a removable cover that’s machine-washable, and the whole thing is quite affordable, costing less than $200 for a queen-size model. 

The biggest caveat we have about the Zinus Ultra Cool Gel Memory Foam Mattress Topper is it’s not attached to the mattress in any way. If you toss and turn at night, the topper will shift around underneath you, and this often pulls my fitted sheet off the mattress, forcing me to remake the bed most mornings. However, you might be able to anchor the topper in place using a mattress pad.

TLDR: What I thought of this Parachute Mattress Topper

I’ve never actually owned a mattress topper before, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. As a back sleeper, I prefer a soft but supportive firmness. When I opened the package, I quite literally gasped — I was shocked at how thick and squishy it was. This is definitely on the softer side in terms of support. I think it would pair best with a medium to firm mattress.

After just one night, I was hooked. The sunken part of my mattress suddenly became unnoticeable, and between the topper and my down-filled duvet, I felt like I had slept in a pita pocket made from clouds. Needless to say, I was beyond impressed with both the topper and the straight 9 hours of sleep I had that night.

Like anything fluffy, I was slightly concerned about it being too insulating. I started testing this mattress topper in the peak of Texas summer (one of the hottest on record!), and I’m happy to say I had zero problems with sleeping too warm on it. If it can last for a straight month of 100+ degrees, I’m confident it can handle any climate. 

I can confirm that it's comfortable for back sleepers, and due to its feel it should be fine for side sleepers too, but this will depend on the type of mattress that's underneath it. Front sleepers, though, should probably give this one a miss as it won't be firm enough.

Unboxing the Parachute Down Alternative Mattress Topper

The mattress topper comes in a pretty traditional thick, plastic bag with rope carry handles. I will probably reuse this bag at some point, whether for storing an extra comforter or for moving house, which makes it quite handy. Otherwise, the box it came in was recyclable. The card tucked into the bag has minimal text — the size and material makeup. The only thing I wish it had said was the care directions. I had to stop myself from chucking it in the washer and go to the website to see that it is in fact dry clean only.

Straight out of the package, the topper had zero odor to my surprise. I gave it a quick spritz of the laundry spray I use (helloooo lavender and chamomile!) and laid it out over my mattress. Because of the baffle box construction, the infill is evenly distributed, and I didn’t have to fluff it up at all.

One thing that I wasn’t expecting is that there are no elastic straps on this topper. I solved this by slipping my Amazon mattress pad over the topper to keep it in place. After adding my cotton percale sheets and down-filled duvet, I was feeling pretty good about my sleeping setup. My bed gained some height and looked perfectly inviting. It didn’t move at all throughout the night which surprised me since it doesn’t have straps. That said, I would recommend a mattress protector to keep it in place, especially one that has a terry-cloth material or something that has a bit of friction.

Is the Parachute Down Alternative Mattress Topper comfortable?

Like most people who live alone, I talk to myself regularly. As soon as I slipped under the covers, I said out loud, “Oh wow, that’s the stuff.” I felt like I was staying at a five-star luxury resort, minus the room service. 

On the first night of testing, I slept so comfortably that I missed my 7 a.m. alarm and didn’t wake up til 8. A little extra rushing to get ready for work was completely worth it—I hadn’t slept that peacefully in a long time. Oversleeping my alarm soon became a theme with this mattress topper, as it happened four more times during the month. Do with that what you will and maybe set a second alarm (trust me).

I’m a back sleeper and this topper perfectly conformed to my body. I was so excited about it that I made a couple of friends come over and lay on it just to see what kind of paradise I was living in. Even my boyfriend who has trouble sleeping soundly slept through the night on this topper.

Edge support
There isn’t a ton of edge support to this mattress topper by itself. My mattress is a relatively firm memory foam material so when I sit on the edge of the bed, I don’t slide off. The mattress topper had no impact on the edge support, and I think it would largely depend on what your mattress is like.

Motion transfer
Again, I think this largely depends on what type of mattress you have, but on my memory foam, I was able to place a glass a few inches from my body, roll side to side, and not have the glass move at all! Perfect for not disturbing your sleeping partner. 

Is the Parachute Down Alternative Mattress Topper breathable and cool?

Because I live in a hot climate, I typically run warm when I sleep. Although I was hesitant about adding something else to my bed — especially something filled with down alternatives — I had zero issues with sweating or getting overheated. That's not to say that this is a cooling mattress topper, but it definitely did not add heat to my sleep setup, which was great.

I’m no scientist, but I’m guessing the 100% cotton sateen shell is what keeps this topper light and breathable. It was with this mattress topper that I learned cozy does not always equate to warm, and for that I am grateful.

Is the Parachute Down Alternative Mattress Topper right for you?

If you’re dealing with an older mattress or one that maybe isn’t the best quality, I would absolutely recommend the Parachute mattress topper. It adds a plush thickness that feels luxurious and soft to the touch. For a couple hundred bucks, your bed can go from drab to fab without having to shell out for an entirely new mattress. Good sleep, in my opinion, is priceless—or in this case, about $300.

The best dorm sleep hacks

From accessorizing properly to adjusting study routines, here's what our sleep experts suggest when moving into a dorm. Is that a yawn we just heard, dearies? Sleep tight! 

1. Establish a routine

Look, we get it: there are going to be all-nighters. There are going to be homecomings. There are going to be Very Long Term Papers that you cannot start the night before but somehow did. Whoops! 

There are always going to be factors affecting when your head actually hits the pillow. Try as hard as you can to establish some sort of routine before tucking in that doesn't involve prepping a Microsoft Word doc or doom-scrolling TikTok for makeup hacks. 

"Bedtime habits signal to the brain that is time to wind down and these activities can boost melatonin, the sleep hormone contributing to a better night’s sleep," says Chris Tattersall, Woolroom's sleep expert, who suggests activities like meditation or reading. 

2. Shower at night

You might feel invigorated after an early-morning shower, but sometimes scrubbing in the evening helps relax your muscles, and in turn, allows you to drift off to Neverland, according to BackHug's Chongsu Lee. 

Likewise, Mattress Online’s expert, James Wilson, The Sleep Geek, says, "A warm shower will initially raise your core temperature. When you step out of the shower, your temperature will then drop, helping you feel cooler. This is important, as it’s a cue for your body to prepare for sleep."

3. Pay attention to the time

You might get lost in the stacks at the library with your roomie until the wee hours, but make a solid effort to close your eyes when it's most important. 

"It is best to sleep between the hours of 11pm to 2am," Lee says. "This is when the body produces the most healing hormones: melatonin, serotonin, and endorphins. If you miss these hours, your sleep won’t be the best quality."

4. Invest in the right bedding

Sometimes it takes a little extra love to help make a dorm bed feel like the one you have at home, and a mattress topper is a good place to start. 

"Consider buying a mattress topper to add an extra layer of comfort and stop you waking up with a stiff neck or a bad back," Wilson recommends.

5. Create a calm environment

We are always trying to nail the boho vibe, but don't disregard hues when decorating your space—it might be beneficial in the long run. 

"Keep colors and smells in mind," says Dr. Angela Holliday-Bell. "Using soothing colors in your dorm room such as blues can help provide a calming and relaxing effect. Certain scents such as lavender and Jasmine have also been shown to promote relaxation, decrease anxiety, and promote sleep."

6. Accessorize accordingly

Sometimes, you can't just rely on a comfy pillow to help you count sheep — you need to bring in the pro tools.

"I recommend using either a sound machine to mask sounds from outside the room, or sleep headphones that can drown out noises from inside the room," says Dr. Holliday-Bell. "You can also use earplugs to keep your environment nice and quiet."

7. Take power naps sparingly

While a power nap between bio and physics might sound appealing, and your bed can be a comfortable place to start that term paper, resist the urge to get cozy during the day. 

"Throughout the day, make sure to differentiate your sleep environment from any other setting," Tattersall recommends. "Although it may be tempting to relax by using your bedroom to watch television, exercise or even work, your brain won't be able to separate the spaces, resulting in a restless night." 

8. Opt for wool

Science says wool has its benefits, including better sleep. Perhaps it's time to invest in a throw for your bed.

"Due to its temperature regulating properties, wool keeps you cool when it’s hot and warm when it’s cold, unlike synthetic fibers," Tattersall says. "Heat regulation is crucial to great sleep and being too hot is often the number one disruptor of a great night’s sleep."

9. Talk to your roomie

While compiling a list of questions to ask your college roomie, one should be devoted to sleep environments. Hash out specifics as soon as possible to avoid any issues from arising throughout the semester.

"Compassionate conversations can be really important," Wilson notes. "If you share a room with another student, then have a quick talk about how you sleep, listen to how they sleep, and agree on some parameters that work for you both. This means everyone can get the sleep they need."

10. Recreate your home

If you're feeling a little homesick and missing your room at home, trick your brain into thinking you're still under their roof, even if you're thousands of miles away. 

"Take pictures of the people and things you love to put around your bed, use the same laundry detergent for your bedding that is used at home, and if you’re in a relationship, maybe take your partner's perfume or cologne so you feel more emotionally connected to them," Wilson adds.

How to clean a mattress topper

Step 1: Remove and wash your bedding 

First things first, start by removing and washing all of your bedding, from your sheets to your comforter to your pillowcases. That way, when you re-make your bed, all your bedding will be nice and fresh.

Step 2: Remove the topper from the mattress  

Next, carefully remove the mattress topper from the mattress, placing it on the floor with the topper side facing upwards. If your topper is too heavy to move on your own, make sure to ask a roommate, friend, or partner to help you. 

Step 3: Spray the mattress topper with white vinegar 

To clean the topper, fill a spray bottle with equal parts water and distilled white vinegar and spritz the entire topper with the solution. Leave it to sit for five minutes before carefully blotting the mattress topper with a clean towel. 

Step 4: Sprinkle baking soda over the mattress topper 

The next step is to coat the entire mattress topper in baking soda. Then, once the topper is completely coated, leave it to sit for a minimum of eight hours. The baking soda will help to remove any odors, freshening up the topper. 

Step 5: Vacuum up the baking soda

Once the baking soda has had time to chill and the topper smells fresh, the next step is to vacuum up the powder.

I've had a lot on my mind recently being a #newlywed. So when I was asked to test the Zamat pillow, I couldn't have been more excited to sleep (and get paid for it). It's been one month since I got married, and NGL, I held a lot of mental weight and baggage on these (toned) shoulders. I get a bit of back pain when I sleep, so I was hoping that this pillow would help fix these probs and that it would mean my mattress wasn't the problem. I won't give too much away, but I was able to get my beauty sleep.

The Zamat pillow I reviewed is specifically designed to promote blood circulation and has an adjustable height to suit all sleeping positions and body types (#bodypositive). It's made of polyurethane memory foam and a polyester pillowcase, which despite being man-made are surprisingly breathable. How do I sleep? I call it "recovery position plus." Yes, it's that emergency arrangement, but with a pillow in between my legs. IDK over time, whether this has helped or hindered me. Or, if the creaks and ouchies have just been a part of entering my thirties. Nevertheless, I was totally down to test this new pillow that was inspired by a group of troubled sleepers. Designed in Oregon, could this pillow really be "The American Dream"?

What I thought of the Zamat pillow

First off, I was pleasantly surprised to notice (or you could say not notice) that it didn't have a funky memory foam smell. That said, when I was doing a bit of desk research on Amazon, some customers did say it had a fishy/chemical stench. Luckily, mine wasn't affected by this odor (thank god!).

I felt like it ergonomically "cupped" my rotator cuff and allowed my spine to fully straighten out, without feeling like my shoulders were shrugged or had a camel-style hump. It isn't as voluminous as a perfectly-puffed hotel pillow, but that's to be expected with the 0.8-inch thick insert.

How to use this Zamat pillow

There are different ways to sleep on this pillow, depending on whether you prefer to position yourself on your front, back, or side while you snooze...

Back sleepers should use both sides of the pillow. According to Zamat, the natural traction of the neck and head support can reduce the pressure on the posterior skull, reduce snoring, and improve sleep quality.

Front sleepers should use the wing side of the pillow. But, in this instance, go ahead and drop both your shoulders and arms by the pillow. This will (hopefully) ensure that you don't suffer from any neck stiffness when you wake up.

Side sleepers like me should rest on the wing. According to Zamat, you can rest your entire shoulder (nearest to the pillow) and place your arm on the armrests so that you don't get pins and needles (IDK about you, but my 31-year-old self still freaks out when I get a numb arm!).

What I loved about this Zamat pillow

It's double-lined
The squishy memory foam (more on that later) has two cocoon-like linings. One feels like a cotton sweatshirt, and the other is a li'l thicker (think a quilted cardigan). Both are removable, but Zamat insists that you only need to wash the weightier one. Each has zips for easy removal.

Its cover can be washed
Yup, you can do more than spot clean the outer quilted jacket. Just pop it in the washing machine at a cycle that's between 86–104 degrees Fahrenheit.

It helps with back pain
The Zamat pillow has got curves in all the right places to take any unnecessary strain off of your back, neck, and shoulders. You can cancel that painful sports massage or chiropractor appointment and give this a try first.

It's great for snorers
My husband is a prolific snorer, so rather than whack him over the head with the pillow, I let him use it for the night. Safe to say, the noise coming from his nose was audibly reduced.

It comes with a warranty and trial
Here's the sitch. Not only will Zamat give you 100 days to make your mind up, but if the pillow isn't 100% your type on paper, you can email them to make you a custom-made fit. FYI, it's good to note that they will suggest removing the foam insert.

What I didn't love about this Zamat pillow

There's a lack of sham options
Though our bedroom is predominantly gray, we like to introduce color, patterns, and texture via our duvet cover, a throw that sits on the end of the bed, and some mustard-colored cushions. Unfortunately, Zamat doesn't have a line of pillowcases (other than the washable quilted outer cover that's provided), so the orthopedic pillow does feel like something out of a nursing home on the bed.

Its memory foam inner is strange
Another thing I wasn't particularly in love with was the texture and finish of the memory foam itself. Tactically, it felt like Play-Doh... no scrap that. Ever made a foccacia? It's got that sticky doughy texture that I should be OK with... but I'm not. On closer inspection, mine looked like The Very Hungry Caterpillar had had its way with it. Once I'd taken the two covers off of it, it was all there looking like a snack (and not in an appetizing way either). PU and polyester aren't the most environmentally-friendly materials to manufacture so it loses kudos for this. But saying that, Zamat says that it can last past the five-year shelf life of a pillow (if properly maintained).

Its inner can't be cleaned
In fact, it's more fragile than I thought. So I wouldn't want this to go head-to-head with my washing machine. Who knows what it'd look like even the most gentle cycles, plus I can see it damaging my appliance if I risked it. No thanks.

Good to know

Delivery: First off — let's talk delivery. Because, I bet like me, you couldn't *wait* for a good night's sleep. The good news is that it arrived within eight days. Which was good considering it came from China to the UK. My contact had provided a live tracking link which allowed me to keep an eye on my package in real-time. JYSK, I'm not sure if that level of communication is as standard, or if it's because I liaised with the PR person to have this product sent to me.

Unboxing: Unfortunately, I don't have a picture or video of me unpacking the pillow. However, what I can tell you is that the pillow itself is shrink-wrapped for ease of delivery. It does initially look a li'l squished in the box but having left it out before bed, it soon unraveled itself.

As with everything we review, we make sure to pair our reviewer and the product we need to review to ensure these two factors will work well togeter. I reviewed this pillow as I often have a little bit of neck pain, which isn't helped by alternating on the sofa/office chair when I work from home.

I would usually change/wash my pillowcases every two weeks, but I wanted to see how gross it could get if you left it. Yes, that is me low-key saying that the cover hasn't been through the washer since I got it, but apart from the teeniest bit of (probably) leftover mascara that my cleanser didn't take off — there's no staining or drool.

This pillow was reviewed by me for a minimum of four weeks before making up my mind, as with all our other pillow reviews. When choosing a star rating, I took into consideration everything including price and comfort.

Do I need a mattress topper?

When considering buying a mattress topper, consider how well you're currently sleeping. Is your current bed setup comfortable enough for you to get all the slumber you need? If so, then you probably don't need a mattress topper right now. 

If, however, you often find yourself struggling to sleep, tossing and turning, and unable to get comfortable, it might be time to think about treating yourself to a new topper. 

Going to college is one of the most exciting times of your life and moving into a dorm is a big part of this experience. Dorm life is a lot of fun. From meeting new people to making friends and going to parties—it’s something you shouldn’t miss out on if you’re going away to school. 

On the other hand, dorms themselves are not exactly luxurious places to live. However, these sparse spaces are easy to make comfortable and are ripe with opportunities to express your sense of style, according to Allison Spampanato, the senior vice president of product design and development for Pottery Barn Kids and Pottery Barn Teen. “A dorm is a blank slate for decorating," she says.

But function is just as important as form, especially when it comes to dorm beds. After all, a dorm isn’t a hotel, so it's your job to make this space your home away from home. If you find the mattress waiting for you on move-in day is lumpy, rock solid, or awful in some other way, here are 10 things you can do to make a dorm bed more comfortable.

1. A mattress topper

While you might be used to a nice mattress at home, it’s unlikely your college-issued one will be anywhere near as comfortable. Fortunately, a mattress topper can be an easy solution to this problem. There are several different types available, including pillow top and memory foam, so be sure to choose whatever material you find the most comfortable. 

2. A mattress protector

There’s no way of telling how old a dorm mattress is or what happened on the mattress before you moved into the room, so investing in a quality mattress protector is key. In addition to giving the bed a “clean slate” of sorts, mattress protectors also protect the bed from dust mites, moisture, and bed bugs. 

3. Good sheets

Even if you are on a budget, quality bedding is the one thing worth the splurge. While most college beds are twin XL, it’s important to double-check before buying anything. Websites like Target, Walmart, Pottery Barn Teen, and Amazon are all great places to look for twin XL sheets (as these sheets are slightly longer than standard twin sizes). You might also want to consider bedding in a bag sets, as these will come with everything you need to make a comfy bed.

4. A high-quality comforter

College can be stressful with a capital S. Therefore there's nothing nicer than having a fluffy comforter waiting for you in bed to help you decompress. A colorful or patterned comforter also helps to decorate the room. 

Pro tip: Be sure to choose a comforter as opposed to a duvet because putting on a duvet can be a little bit difficult within the confines of a dorm room or if your bed is lofted. 

5. Quality pillows

It’s hard to get shut-eye on flat or lumpy pillows, so it’s crucial to find the best pillow for your sleep style. Whether you prefer down, down alternative, or another material, there are so many different types of pillows out there. While this might be something you want to try out in person, buying online is certainly more convenient. 6. A headboard

Spampanato tells me, “Dorm bed frames are usually very basic, so you can transform your sleep space into a comfortable spot to lounge by adding a dorm-approved headboard in an upholstered fabric or faux leather that can be secured to the wall with adhesive backing.”

While a headboard isn’t 100% necessary, it instantly elevates the entire dorm room. A soft headboard also makes it much easier to sit up in bed and work. If you buy a nice one, you can also use it when you move out of your dorm into an apartment or house. 

7. A nightstand or bedside table

This doesn't necessarily affect your bed directly, but it does make sleeping and your nighttime routine much more comfy. While most colleges will provide basic furniture such as bed frames and desks, they might not provide a side table or nightstand for keeping things like your phone, a lamp, or a bottle of water. It’s best to go with a nightstand that has at least one or two drawers so you can also use it for extra storage, such as this handy wheeled one from Dormify.

8. Ear plugs

Remember, just because you have a test tomorrow morning at 8:30 am doesn’t mean that everyone else does too. Dorms are rarely quiet places to live, so using a pair of earplugs can help drown out everything from parties to your roommate’s loud music to whatever is happening on the other side of the wall.  

9. An eye mask

Dorm lighting is notoriously harsh and if your roommate is studying or writing a paper late at night, they might need to keep those strong overhead lights on. 10. A white noise machine

How to make a bed more comfortable

Try a mattress topper

If your mattress is the problem but you’re not able to afford to replace it, or your landlord won’t cough up the dough for a new one, investing in the best mattress topper your money can buy could be the answer. 

Wondering what a mattress topper is? These nifty bedroom items add an extra layer of comfort, so even if your mattress is a little worse for wear, a topper could be a sleep game-changer. They boost comfort, enhance support, and cover any bumpy or sagging areas. Most consist of a thin layer of foam or other material. 

And, if you’re a hot sleeper, shop for the best cooling mattress topper or pad. Some options come with gel-infused memory foam to keep you cool. This might surprise you as most people assume memory foam can be on the sticky side. However, there are loads of benefits to buying a memory foam mattress topper.

Try a mattress topper

Thinner than a mattress topper, a mattress pad is also a great option for cranking up the comfort of your bed. Especially if you’re looking to increase your comfort but need to keep your costs low — you’ll find that mattress pads are far cheaper than mattress toppers. Treat yourself to a new pillow

If you wake up with a sore back, neck, and shoulders, it might be time to invest in a pair of the best pillows. To sleep well, you need a comfortable pillow that provides adequate head and neck support without being overly firm. So, if you’re sleeping with a pillow that’s too firm or a pillow that’s so old it’s lost all its supportive attributes, the time has probably come to upgrade it. 

When choosing a pillow, don’t forget to take into account how you sleep. It’s usually better for back and stomach sleepers to have slightly thinner pillows, while side sleepers usually need thicker pillows. Flip your mattress

Some newer mattresses (including the best mattresses in a box) aren’t designed to be flipped. But, if you have an older mattress, or a modern design that’s flippable, you might find turning it over will boost the support and make sleeping a little more comfortable. If you have a one-sided mattress — aka, there’s only padding on one side — you can’t flip it, but it can still be turned around, which could help enhance your sleep. 

Alternatively, if your mattress is showing serious signs of wear and tear (typically around the 5-10 year) mark, it might be time to change it. Buy better linens

Could the reason that your bed isn’t all that comfortable to sleep in be the fact that your bedding requires an update? Buying the best bed or the best headboard can be expensive, hence why I've kept this point last. But if you're sleeping without the proper infrastructure in place, it's time to invest. When choosing a bed, pick an option that your mattress sits comfortably within. Also, if you have the budget, go for an upholstered or storage bed. These tiny details will make a world of difference (especially in a small bedroom where the best storage headboard can help to declutter your scheme).

What’s cookin’, good lookin’? Well, hopefully lots of things, once you’ve got everything you need to get started.

• Appliances: Small kitchen appliances are best for apartments, such as small coffee makers and small air fryers.

• Pots and pans: Non-stick pans are seriously amazing — we really rate the Our Place Always Pan here at Real Homes.
• Knives: I recommend getting a set like this Syvio set that’s Amazon’s Choice.
• Cutting board: Chop that fruit and veg without damaging those surfaces.

• Trash can and bags: A good kitchen trash can is a necessity.

Living area checklist for first apartment

AKA, the Netflix and chill zone. This list has all the items you need to spread out and make the space your own.

• Seating: One couch and a couple of armchairs are plenty for an apartment.
• Coffee table: Because you can’t put your mug on the floor. BTW, lift-top ones make for a great additional storage unit.

Can you wash a mattress cover? 

Don't take it from me, certified House Cleaning Technician (HCT) and mattress consultant at mattressive.com Hugo Guerrero, confirms "it's highly advisable to wash a mattress cover as it collects sweat and bacteria overnight. It can also trap dust and collect dead skin should your fitted sheet move out of place. However, the washing process will differ depending on the type and material of the mattress cover."

Typically memory foam and hybrid mattresses will come with a fixed mattress cover that keeps the layers in place. And while you can't simply bung this one in the machine, you can still keep it clean. To do so Guerrero suggests to "remove your bedding, and sprinkle baking soda generously on the mattress cover." If you're feeling a little ~extra~ you can add an essential oil too. Let this soak on the bed for as long as possible, and then vacuum the residue with your fave handheld vac. Enjoy a clean and fresh mattress, easy.

Honestly: a mattress topper can totally transform your sleep. No, it won't take away your work stress or get your roommate to turn their music down, but it will up the comfort levels on your current bed. 1. What's on the inside matters

There are lots of types of mattress toppers to choose from, and the one you choose will come down to personal preference — memory foam can be a bit of a love/hate material. 

Not everyone is so set on what cushioning they'd like to sleep on. And deciding is not as simple as giving it a squish with your hand or bouncing on a bed and judging whether you like it. The material of your topper matters when it comes to allergies, support, and most of all, whether you're wanting a topper to pretty much replace your mattress, or simply add a pillowy top to one you find too firm (and visa versa).  

If you get the sniffles at night, you'll want to stay away from natural fillings and opt for a memory foam mattress topper instead. But if you're wanting a super-soft topper to transform your hard sleep surface, a feather or down-alternative option will get you cloud-like sleep. Something in between? A hybrid obvs.

2. Figure out your sleep style

Choosing a mattress topper according to how you rest is the easiest way to increase comfort levels.

PS: The pillow you sleep on will also impact your sleep position. It might be worth looking into how to choose a pillow for the ultimate sleep set-up. For now, see which firmness rating you should choose based on your sleeping position: 

• Side sleepers are prone to experiencing achy joints, especially around the hips and shoulders due to poor spinal alignment. See whether your knee overlaps the other or sits on top. • Back sleepers are recommended a middle-ground mattress for maximum comfort: not too soft, not too firm. In the words of Goldilocks, make sure your bed is "just right" in order to hold you tight in all the right places.

Thickness

Mattress toppers can range in thickness, some adding a thin layer of cushioning, others adding a good few inches to totally transform your bed — yep, just like a Princess and the pea moment. How thick you want your mattress topper to be, will depend on whether you're wanting your topper to substitute a brand new bed (in which case, the thicker the better), or a softer sleep surface than the one you've already got. The average topper is around three inches, with the thinnest being 1.5 and a super-thick one considered at the five-inch mark. If you are wanting a topper with depth, remember that your bed will be significantly taller, and you'll need to buy a deep fitted/flat sheet, if you haven't got one already. 

4. Any additional sleep needs?

Just the same as it is when choosing a new mattress, getting a mattress topper is far from a one-size fits all approach. As you'll know from experience, it can be hard to get comfy when sleeping alongside a partner or friend. One of you might get back pain, the other might overheat, or even have allergies ⁠— we all have different sleep needs.

Together we've broken down five common issues and how choosing the right sleep surface can solve them: 

• Experiencing back pain? "When dealing with chronic or frequent pain, it’s best to choose a mattress topper that can offer decent pressure relief," explains Hsu. 5.Size

Okay, it may sound simple, but make sure your topper is the right size. By the "right" size, I'm referring to the size of your mattress. Most mattress brands in the US offer topper sizes the same as your mattress, from twin all the way to California king. There are other sizes in-between standard variations that, if ordered incorrectly, may mean your topper will overhang or not be able to be attached properly. You really won't want it to slip around as you sleep. 

6. How much are you willing to spend?

The great thing about mattress toppers is that they are SO much cheaper than investing in a brand-new mattress. Yup, they're still a little costly (the cheapest you could get a *good* topper for is around $100, but there are even more affordable options out there. And honestly: the price to upgrade your sleep massively, without having to totally splurge on a new bed, is impressive. 

A great mattress topper will help your current mattress last longer — whether it's new, or not, and perform as a great substitute until you've saved enough to cash in on the bed of your dreams. If you rent, are in a college dorm or are planning on moving soon, then they're also a lot more convenient than having to heft a heavy mattress Ross from Friends style up a stairwell.

Let's get straight to it: My current (8-year-old) mattress is old and tired, much like me after a night of sleeping on it. The foam mattress topper is noticeably supportive, with a medium-firmness and a 1.5-inch depth. Generously sized elastic loops at the corners make it easy to fit on an existing mattress without a struggle and keep the topper on securely without slippage. I found this Saatva topper to have the capacity to turn an old mattress, like mine, into an impressive sleep surface without the expense or effort of getting a whole new one. Honestly: I slept better than ever.

Unboxing the Saatva Foam Mattress Topper

I opened the ~elegantly~ packaged box, removed my older mattress topper, and rolled out the 1.5-inch topper atop my existing mattress. My own mattress is a Casper, FYI, not a Saatva, but these fit on any brand’s beds, blending in seamlessly.

Right away, I noticed the generous size of the elastic bands — one at each corner — which were easy to loop over my existing mattress without a struggle. The fit is stable and secure and doesn’t allow for any shifting once in place. Nice. 

Is the Saatva Foam Mattress Topper comfortable?

Instantly, I could tell a difference with this topper in place. This new foam mattress topper replaced my previous one, which had been more pillowy, made from a down alternative. In comparison, the Saatva foam topper felt much more supportive and genuinely upgraded my sleep surface from lumpy to luxe. It actually elevates sleep to a more hotel-like experience, including the breezy feel of a breathable hotel room, even on an older mattress. I had that new-bed feel without the cost or hassle of a mattress replacement. 

I did experience a few wakeful nights on it, but I attribute these more to my stress levels and getting used to a new type of bed, before anything else. 

Firmness
This 1.5-inch memory foam topper has a medium firmness suited to all sleep positions — especially side sleepers. Because I’m typically a side sleeper, this was just right as the construction hugs and holds my body without me sinking in, or lying right on top. 

Pressure relief and support
The high-density foam used in this topper (at least five pounds per cubic foot, compared with three pounds, more typical of similar foams) does a great job at reducing pressure on the body. It’s supportive and cushioning; it honestly feels like it’s holding my spine and my joints right where they need to be.

Is the Saatva Foam Mattress Topper breathable and cool?

I tested this mattress topper during a cool wintertime period — unseasonably cool for my home city of Los Angeles. So I was looking for temperature regulation, rather than cooling. Still, this mattress topper’s cover is made with naturally breathable and moisture-wicking organic cotton, and I’m optimistic it will fulfill that promise for the hot months soon to come.

Is this the right mattress topper for you?

While this isn't something I struggle with (just yet), foam toppers are recommended for people who deal with back pain or simply cannot get to sleep at night, because they contour to the body which aligns the spine and helps relieve any pressure. As sleeping on your side is also the best position to keep your neck, hips, and knees in line, Saatva state this one is best for side sleepers. But honestly: any sleep position will do, as I find myself sprawling out throughout the night, and still sleeping just fine.

If you like the sound of Saatva, too much to let it go, firstly, I wouldn't blame you, and secondly, they've got two other topper options you might like. For the sweaty sleepers, their graphite mattress topper seems pretty top-notch, and if you're into anything organic, as you should, they've got a great latex version, too. FYI: these toppers do have a higher price point than the foam topper I tested.

TDLR: What I thought of the Coop Retreat mattress topper

I've tested a few mattress toppers before, and I'm not usually a memory foam lover so I didn't think I would get along with this plush-top option. It's pretty squishy, and my body prefers a firmer sleep surface as a side sleeper. I'll admit that the super puffy pillow top took a few nights to get used to, and it felt a little lumpy, to begin with. 

But, after getting used to it, it has perfectly upped the comfort levels of my standard medium-firm mattress, and I'd recommend it to any renter who wants something cozier than the bed that came with their apartment. It's not thick enough to act as a replacement mattress, especially if your current sleep surface is sinking or you have springs poking out, but I was very impressed with the box construction comfort. 

5-month update:
I've been sleeping on the Coop mattress topper for nearly 6 months now and it's just as comfy as it was when I first put it onto the bed. I have found that after a few months, I have needed to shake out the topper for it to de-bunch. I hardly move when I sleep so for a while there was little bunching or movement in the memory foam, but for someone who tosses and turns in the night, you may have to shake out the squares more often.

When it comes to cleaning, I spot-cleaned it in areas when I come to change the bed and launder the rest of my bedding. It's not been a difficult job but the memory foam does take a while to dry, so I'd recommend using as little liquid as possible when you're washing this mattress topper

Unboxing the Coop Mattress Topper

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the carry bag this topper comes in. It may have been heavy, but it's pretty easy to carry thanks to the handles. The cute peach-colored tote can be chucked over your shoulder. Think of it as your new gym, sorry *bedding* bag. After unzipping the side, I was greeted with a little card with everything I needed to know about the Coop retreat mattress topper, but also with a lot of plastic. 

Yup, I pulled out the topper that was tightly rolled into a burrito, to find it wrapped (more than once over) in thick, non-recyclable plastic packaging. Having tested a few toppers and lots of other bedding items that have come delivered in eco-friendly cardboard packaging, I have to admit, I was disappointed. So much so, I had to take a pic of it.

I laid out the topper on my bed before putting it on, just to get a feel of it. Initially skeptical, as a non-memory foam lover, I had to push around the filling of each quilt to flatten out any lumps that had formed from it being stored. Being accustomed to a flat surfaced mattress, I did question whether I would feel each baffle box construction as I slept and wondered if it might bunch as I tossed and turned in the night. 

I added my deep fitted sheet on top (you'll want to make sure you have a deep pocket sheet) and could see the foam quilts beneath. It also made my bed look pretty huge! I have my Coop Exhale Duvet on top, too, which is a down alternative and gives the look and feel of a thick feather-filled comforter. 

Is the Coop Mattress Topper comfortable?

The first night, I have to admit, took a little getting used to — but not in a bad way. It felt plush and cozy, not what I was used to. In fact, you could say it was a sort of The Princess and the Pea moment, where I climbed atop my bed that was now 5 inches thicker now and rolled around trying to figure out what was wrong with it. 

Nothing, of course. It was actually a whole lot better. So soft and comfortable, the foam adapted to my body to the point where my joints were cradled, cushioned, and supported. I sleep on my side and sometimes suffer from knee aches where my legs overlap. But the small pockets of plush helped. I also had a few of my friends and my boyfriend gives their thoughts when they stayed over. My friend, who sleeps on her back enjoyed the cloud-like cushioning, and I had to LITERALLY drag my boyfriend out of bed in the morning. But let's face it, boys tend to be quite easily impressed when it comes to these things.

Although lots of people in Japan do have box spring beds, futons are still super popular, especially in studios or small apartments as they can be folded and stored away when not in use. What to consider when choosing a mattress bag

• Thickness and durability: Naturally, thicker materials tend to be more durable. For some bags, you’ll be able to see how many millimeters (that’s one-thousandth of an inch) it is. A bag that’s 3 mm to 6 mm should be sufficient for most moves, as it can stand up well to handling and possibly being dragged across surfaces. If it’s 2 mm, that doesn’t necessarily mean you shouldn’t use it, but just be aware it’s less likely to withstand rough handling. These may be better suited for storage in a home or garage.
• Size: It sounds simple, but you’ll want to make sure your mattress bag is the right size for your mattress. Many bags come in different sizes, so there’s sure to be one that fits, but you don’t want to find yourself trying to fit a mattress into a bag that’s too small on moving day. Its "most sustainable and organic mattress yet", I was beyond excited to try and review The Simba Green Organic GO Hybrid® mattress. I'd heard good things about Simba mattresses, notably how as a brand it makes both quality and eco-friendliness a top priority and is aiming to be Net Zeo by 2023 — into it. Eco-credentials and keeping things as natural as possible are really important to me, from the clothes I buy to how I dress my home, so the fact that the Simba Green GO mattress is made up of innovative materials that are renewable and biodegradable really caught my attention.

All Simba mattresses are 100% recyclable but it's gone the extra mile with this latest release that "has half the carbon footprint of traditional hybrid mattresses." It's all in the detail: the Simba Green GO has six layers in total. To give some context to Simba and/or hybrid connoisseurs, that's one up compared to the five in the Original Hybrid and the later Simba Hybrid Pro which has seven in total. Both of these mattresses got 5 out of 5 stars for their good level of bounce, support, and balanced motion transfer FYI.

I had been sleeping on a memory foam mattress that I bought back in 2018 and it's safe to say that it was in a sorry state. I could feel miracoil springs popping through and having put it through a few house moves, and a lifetime of pets on the bed (sans mattress protractor), it was looking very grubby and in need of a good mattress upgrade. The fact that Simba has thought about every detail of sustainability, from not using glue that can be polluting to the environment, to the organic latex comfort layer that cushions your entire body, makes this bed extra special.

TLDR

As you'd expect when sleeping on any new mattress, the first couple of nights felt, different. Those six layers, inc. patented micro springs and organic latex seemed to really pull through, as once the mattress had settled (2-3 days) and I'd adjusted to the thickness of it, I really started to feel that my body was getting more support than before and that my bed space was a little more bouncy, breathable, and less stuffy.

I repeat the SImba Green GO is a lot thicker than the mattress I had before (12" compared to the average 10-11" you'll typically find) — not that that is a bad thing. It does mean, however, that you'll deep-set bedsheets and bedding if you want your bed to look more polished. I only had standard sheets but thankfully my king-size duvet hides the mattress sides while I put a bedding order in. 

I sleep solo, with my cat — a vibe I am aware — but this doesn't mean that I starfish. I actually tend to sleep in a hamster-like position on my side. As the mattress is so thick and the edge support is there — but noticeably softer than on my last mattress — I did have a few  "oops, nearly fell off there" moments, but that is something I will get used to. Not forgetting that the eco-cred on this mattress does make it one of the best organic and eco-friendly mattresses on the UK market RN, so that is not too shabby at all.

Delivery and unboxing the Simba GO

Delivery was a breeze, as was organizing a removal of my old mattress. The Simba Go came in one medium/large box, with the mattress itself wrapped tightly inside within a couple of layers of plastic. As expected from a mattress made with 100% recyclable materials, and with a completely Carbon Neutral Delivery too, I didn't find that there was any unnecessary packaging at all.

Unboxing was, of course, exciting and kind of hilarious because I'd never had to take a mattress out of a box before. Getting the Simba GO in place didn't take longer than a half hour but I did ask my friend to help as I don't think I wouldn't have been able to do it myself without difficulty and/or knocking over a few plants.

If you scan the barcode on the side of the box it tells you more information on the mattress itself but otherwise, there were instructions on the plastic wrap. We laid the mattress onto my bed slats and left it there for the day. Come the evening, about nine hours later, I carefully cut off the cover and pulled it away to make my bed and sleep in it.

My Simba sleep journal 

Night 1
The mattress rested for about nine hours before I took off the plastic and hunkered down to sleep. As mentioned, my friend helped, but once the mattress is down and in place, it's easy to work with, especially with the four handles.

When I jumped (yes jumped) on it I was like woah, this is way thicker and softer than my last mattress (a pocket-sprung memory foam), and that I should probably not lean over the side too much for risk of falling off. 

So perhaps the sheer excitement of/combined with a little vertigo and the fact that it can take up to 72 hours according to Simba for the mattress to fully rest, meant I didn’t actually sleep that much! I would like to stress, this is a regular in my world. 

I also really like the added height it gave to my bed, it elevates what is a small room. Note to self that I should order deeper-set sheets too.

Night 2
I woke up with a sore neck from awkward pillow positioning and cat battles for space on said pillow, rest of body fine, just generally need to move and stretch.

Night 3
I had a super active day inc. lots of cycling and pilates, and I also felt like this was the breakthrough night which so happened to be on point with what Simba noted as the 72hrs rest time. I.e. I slept like a log.

Night 4
Good sleep continued and I started to notice small improvements compared to what I had before. The cushioning was the best and I did feel like I was sinking into a cloud which is always ideal after a long day in the city.

Night 5
The smug feelings continued and, as a solo gal, I got my housemates to hop on to help me gauge the motion transfer and firmness rating too. Unsurprisingly, they were more than willing to help. We didn't have a weight but we're all pretty different heights and body shapes so it was a pretty fair way of testing this. There wasn't much motion transfer so if you have a partner, or a really heavy cat, you shouldn't have any issues.

Night 6
I didn't sleep a ton this night, however, I felt pretty okay in the morning and my body wasn't painful or achey — surprising considering how little shut-eye I got.

Night 7
Okay so one week has gone by and call it placebo or not, I’m feeling pretty good on the Simba GO. With or without a lot of actual sleeping hours, my body feels supported and rested.

Admittedly I am still getting that “oops don’t fall off” feeling when I approach the side, but then again, perhaps I should stop reaching for my phone on the floor in the early hours.

What happened next 

Support: As time has gone on, a month or so, I've only enjoyed sleeping on this sustainable and bougie-feeling mattress even more. The Simba GO keeps delivering on comfort and you can feel the targeted Supportcore™ base coming into play — the unnoticeable springs gently respond to your body movement. 

Cooling properties: Another feature that I feel became more prominent over time was the cooling properties of that top cotton layer and the breathability. Every once in a while, I'll struggle with temperature regulation at night, being either too hot (I have been told I am like a little furnace) or too cold, but I find that this mattress does a good job of keeping things balanced.

Edge-support: I love how thick it is and although the edge support is not solid, it really isn't an issue and the average, un-chaotic person should not fall out of bed. There is a lot of support from the highly positioned micro coils and it's got a cozy level of bounce.

Pressure relief: Although I have no particular back problems or posture issues, as far as I'm aware, the Simba GO offers pressure relief and a soothing sensation for hard-worked muscles. Simply put, this mattress serves a dreamy and restorative night's sleep.

Full disclosure, I took a week out and went to France to visit family during the testing period. All I will say is that my sleep setup was quaint and less supported, I had clearly been nicely adjusting to my new plump mattress and I was happy when I got back to resting on it.

I'd never considered a mattress protector before but I will be investing in one asap. You can clean the fabric with a clean, damp, soft cloth but you can't fully remove the cover to wash it so Simba also encourages you to use added protection.

Whether I'm shopping in the grocery store or browsing my fave fashion site, organic alternatives are becoming pretty popular. So it's no surprise organic mattresses are making their way into the market, too. And while we're (most likely) all in agreement that "going organic" is a better buying decision, what it actually means isn't so clear — especially when it comes to your bed. 

Eco-friendly, pure, natural, and non-toxic: These are a few of the interchangeable terms that are often used in relation to organic products. So surely this applies to the type of bed you're buying, right? Not exactly. After speaking to the experts, organic and eco-friendly mattresses can mean two totally different things with non-toxic models jumping in to make things even more confusing. 

To break down this bed jargon, I've uncovered what an organic mattress actually is below, so you can rest assured you're buying and sleeping well on a bed that's best for you. 

What is an organic mattress? 

“An organic mattress is one made with certified organic materials, like natural latex, wool, and cotton,” explains Annie Graybill, product and sleep expert at Avocado. Free from harmful chemicals and produced with more sustainable practices, if it’s time to upgrade your bed, an organic mattress can look after you and the earth. 

Not to be mistaken for an "eco-friendly mattress" or "natural mattress," a true organic mattress will have gold standard certifications, such as the Global Organic Textile Standard (aka GOTS). This certifies the materials used are completely natural and contain no chemicals or toxins. If your mattress is made of latex, it's important to check for GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard) certifications, too. 

Psst! Many mattresses may claim to be made with organic materials rather than being wholly organic. This could refer to only a small percentage of fabrics being organic — not the full mattress.

You might have noticed when you're shopping for your veggies at the store that the organic option is often more expensive than the regular. Well, you pay for what you get because buying organically is better for you and the planet. Here are a few of our favorite organic mattresses, tried, tested, and totally worth the extra spend. 

The time has come to make your most adult purchase yet: a mattress. Maybe you've moved into your own place or have finally decided to invest in getting better sleep (yay!). That lumpy spring mattress your mom got you isn't doing you any favors after this many years anyway. This isn't like most other quick purchases for your space — buying yourself a brand-new mattress is pretty major. 

Not only is it tricky to choose the right mattress for you, but once you've found it, your dream bed could end up costing thousands of dollars. Time and money well spent, obvi, but it's worth knowing when the best time to buy a mattress is. There are annual mattress sales events and holiday weekends where you could save some serious cash. Most-popular mattresses from big brands like Emma, Casper, and Avocado will be discounted, and models from retailers like Mattress Firm may be on sale, too.

Oh, there are also a few good cheap mattresses out there, too. These are perfect if you're not 100% ready to say goodbye to your savings.

Mega sales and holiday weekends

If cost is your biggest concern, then it's worth waiting til the key mattress sales times before clicking checkout on the mattress you've had your eye on. "Black Friday, Amazon Prime events, and the January sales will always have great deals on mattresses," says Theresa Schnorbach, sleep scientist from Emma, The Sleep Company. "Spring is also a [good] time, especially for mattress sales as many take the opportunity to refresh their bed to clear out the old and bring in the new."

Key sales worth waiting for: 

• Presidents Day: Falling on the third Monday in February every year, this holiday weekend will see plenty of sales from Presidents day itself through to the weekend. 
• Memorial Day: Though it's on the third Monday of May, the Memorial Day sales usually begin the week before and continue over Memorial Day weekend. 
• Fourth of July: The Independence Day sale period often lasts over a week with plenty of offers on your big-ticket items like mattresses, furniture, and appliances. 
• Labor Day: Similar to memorial day, you'll find sales on the first Monday in September right through to the following weekend. 
• Black Friday and Cyber Monday: The biggest sales event of the year, it's common to see big brands launch their most competitive deals of the year for at least a week (e.g. in 2022, we saw at least 60% of top-rated beds on sale). If you can wait until then, you won't regret it. 
• Amazon Prime Day(s): Believe it or not, you can get some of the best mattresses on Amazon, and when Amazon hosts its mega sale event, typically in mid-July, you'll be able to find them discounted. 

Major life events

While we always say to wait until key sales periods to score some savings on a mattress, you should never sacrifice your sleep. "There isn’t really any 'right' or 'wrong' time to buy a mattress; if you need a new bed, then you need one," says Schnorbach. Here are a few personal circumstances when it might be best to make your most adult purchase yet: 

• You've had your mattress for longer than you can remember. I bet most of us are still sleeping on the bed our moms bought us way back when. There's nothing wrong with this, as long as it's still comfy. If your bed is worn, or damaged, or you can feel springs, it's time for an upgrade. 
• You're moving out. Firstly congrats! Secondly, it's time to buy yourself your very own bed. If your new apartment or home doesn't come with a mattress provided, now's a great opportunity to invest in the mattress you'll probably keep for years.
• If your current mattress — old or new — is uncomfortable then it's worth finding a mattress that most suits your sleep needs. And if you can't quite afford one just yet, then a comfy mattress topper might be a better fit.

This topper is soft. We tested it atop a very firm mattress and it made it a lot more bearable for our reviewer. Otherwise, the ViscoSoft Serene Hybrid Mattress Topper has a memory foam base made out of CertiPUR-US gel-infused memory foam that is combined with a down-alternative pillow-top cover. It is available in a three or four-inch option. The four-inch topper consists of 2.5 inches of memory foam and 1.5 inches of the down-alternative cover, while the three-inch is half gel foam. As for the pillow-top cover, this is machine-washable and easy to install over a mattress and mattress topper with its four built-in corner elastic straps. Inside, the quilted design has a plush 700gsm down alternative fill with a 300-thread count cotton cover. In short: this topper is designed for anyone who loves the luxurious feel of a pillow top with the support of memory foam.

Sometimes choosing between two different materials can feel like a compromise, but with a hybrid topper like this one, that's certainly not the case. Our tester Julia reviewed the four-inch version of this topper which claims to add additional softness to any base — this was exactly what she needed as she was working with a very firm bed-in-a-box. She noted that upon opening, it had a gas-like smell but this disappeared significantly over 24 hours. On the first night, she reported having instantly had a more restful night's sleep than she had in a while and no joint pain from sleeping on her side. She claimed the topper brought her bed from a 9/10 on the firmness scale to around a five, which is pretty impressive. All in all, It provided excellent pressure relief when paired with a firm mattress and was just right for all sleeping positions seeking additional cushioning and support.

If you're working with an already soft mattress and would like a topper to make your bed slightly harder, then avoid this topper for sure. If you are a hot sleeper, then we would also avoid this topper as Julia found that she slept ever so slightly warmer on it than she did without it being on her bed. The best mattress topper for side sleepers

If you've always wanted a Tempur-Pedic mattress but it has always been out of budget, then turn to the Tempur-Topper Supreme as the next best thing. This medium-firm topper is crafted using the same foam you'll find in Tempur-Pedic's mattress range. This material adapts to a person’s shape, weight, and temperature for the best pressure relief, in a three-inch slab, wrapped in a washable hypoallergenic cover. It is, admittedly, a bit of a splurge starting from $319 for a Twin, though you can frequently find it on sale.

This Tempur-Pedic topper ticked all our boxes for what we look for in a topper to make a mattress feel new again: minimal motion transfer, hypoallergenic, and breathable. Our tester Alexandra (who is a side sleeper) reviewed this topper for us, and originally she was sleeping on a cheap and uncomfortable spring mattress. She loved that the Tempur-Topper Supreme molds around your body and prevents sinking which characterizes many memory foam mattress toppers. Her favorite feature was its sublime motion isolation as she shares a bed with her partner who wakes earlier than her. She claimed she never felt him get out of bed, roll, or even move in the slightest.

This topper isn't fitted with straps, so Alexandra found that it occasionally slid down her bed, FYI. It's also not your best bet if you sleep warm as it's not particularly cooling — it's not any warmer than your average topper, though. You can no longer buy this topper from Tempur direct, only from Wayfair. It doesn't come with a free trial, but you do get a 10-year warranty.

The best value mattress topper

For anyone whose looking to save the life of their current mattress without a costly investment, this Allswell Memory Foam Mattress Topper is the perfect pick.  Great for all types of sleepers, so long as you like a soft base, this topper features a dual-layer memory foam design. The top two inches are designed to make a bed more comfortable, while the bottom two inches provide support. The Coolflow foam upper layer wicks moisture and maximizes airflow to keep you cool. The topper is also infused with copper gel for its antimicrobial and cooling properties. 

If you're currently working with a firm mattress, or you love a softer base, then this is the perfect topper for a satisfactory night's sleep. Our tester Paige found that it did an impressive job at preventing motion transfer — while adding significant softness and preventing pain on pressure points. The cool foam promoted airflow and wicked away moisture on hot nights, and while she noted she didn't sleep cooler, she stayed the same temperature despite it reaching 85ºF indoors while testing. Thanks to its ability to prevent motion transfer, she also found that it's ideal for couples and anyone who might share their bed with kids or pets.

There were minor inconveniences like its powerful off-gassing smell which does take 72 hours to disappear, but it does offer great value for the price. Avoid it if you require something a little firm and don't like to sink into your bed. If edge support is important to you, then you'll also want to give it a miss as its edges are super soft.

The best mattress topper for back pain

For anyone seeking respite from persistent back pain, or simply looking to ease up on pressure points, the Nolah Mattress Topper should be your top pick. It utilizes two inches of the company's proprietary Air Foam found in its flagship mattress, the Nolah Original. Its design is simple but effective — foam wrapped in an organic cotton cover placed upon your existing mattress, secured in place with thick elastic bands on each corner. It fits your needs and is available in two firmness options, Plush with a cloudlike 3/10 firmness level and Luxury Firm with a moderate 5–7/10. 

Our reviewer Jaclyn is a back sleeper and she reviewed the firmer version of this topper, though she found it a little soft. She found two inches to be the perfect depth to relieve pressure without dealing with any sink-in feelings. Jaclyn said she felt like her spine was aligned when sleeping on her front and side, and sleeping on this topper made her notice a real difference in her back pain — in other words, it pretty much disappeared overnight. Beyond being incredibly comfortable, the topper sleeps temperature neutral, meaning it didn't contribute to overheating, and motion transfer was minimal.

You'll want to avoid this topper if you're a front sleeper as Jaclyn noted that her torso cratered in the mattress when she tried lying on her stomach. It has an organic cotton cover which is great, but this isn't removable so this topper is spot clean only. Also, note that Jalcyn spotted that this topper doesn't seem to cover the full surface area of a bed as it left a one-inch gap on both the left side and the top of her bed.  Once your sheets are on, you can't notice, just an FYI.

If lining your bed with ice packs has once crossed your mind, you're going to need a mattress topper that does the absolute most in keeping you cool and regulating your temperature throughout the night. Well, Subrtex’s Gel Infused Memory Foam topper utilizes holes and ventilation to promote air circulation, while the tiny microbeads of gel help with temperature regulation and cooling. The ergonomic design of this mattress topper means it’s designed for any body weight, any body type, and any sleeper, by perfectly aligning the spine. It comes in three thickness levels which influence the softness of the product —the thicker the plusher, typically. Wrapped in a removable, washable bamboo casing, it stays in place thanks to four adjustable elastic straps.

As a side sleeper who normally sleeps hot, our reviewer Alex Shimalla was seriously impressed by the three-inch version of this topper. She used it on top of her very old spring mattress and said it made her feel cool, supported, and super comfortable while she was still able to roll over without it being any major workout. Truthfully, she was shocked by its comfort and firmness — especially considering its affordable price tag. She also noted little to no motion transfer, but most impressively, she claims that the often wakes up sweating every night but after sleeping on this topper, she actually found herself waking up a little cold (which is definitely not a complaint!).

This mattress topper is a little more firm than the others in this guide, so if you like a softer bed, then avoid it. Otherwise, our only other complaint is that its warranty is a bit confusing as it's no longer sold via the Subrtex website. So check where you are buying yours for their policy.

The best wool mattress topper

At three inches, PlushBeds offers one of the thickest wool mattress toppers on the market, making it exceptionally plush. Wool is highly regarded in bedding for its ability to wick away moisture and provide just the right amount of insulation, perfect for year-round use. Especially if you are a warm or cold sleeper. We love that each wool topper is made to order, handcrafted, and sourced from farms with a sustained commitment to humane treatment and natural processing. The wool batting is encased in a 100 percent organic cotton sateen cover that is also hand-tufted. This drives up the price tag of the wool topper, but it's all so worth it.

Our reviewer Alex Temblador tested this atop her already comfortable mattress, thinking it wouldn't make much of a difference to her sleep. She was very wrong! This topper shocked her. Her body did need a few days to adjust to it because it's a different material than she's used to sleeping on, and she was surprised to note that it had no smell like other mattress toppers she has used. After five days, she could sleep on her stomach, back, or side without any issues. She noted that she felt like a cat curling up in a soft and buoyant bed. Living in Texas and testing this topper in the summer, she reported it was 100 degrees several nights while testing, and she never got hot or sweaty at night. In addition to offering necessary pressure-relieving comfort, the wool topper has natural anti-microbial properties that prevent mold, mildew, and dust mites.

Because this topper is made from wool, is quite expensive. With this in mind, it's not great that it isn't refundable in our opinion. Hence why it sits last on our list. It's also spot-clean only, FYI.

The best pillow top mattress topper

If you're searching for a pillow top mattress topper (and by that, we mean something super plush and cloud-like) then the Coop Retreat Topper is it. Sure, it costs a little more than others on our list, but it is free from chemicals and it's organic. This mattress topper is filled with cross-cut memory foam and microfiber blend and is five inches thick. The first night may seem a little lumpy, but trust us — after this fancy foam has molded to your body, it'll feel like sleeping on a cloud. A word of warning: Though thick, this mattress topper is so plush that it wouldn't be able to rescue a super old and tired mattress, just an FYI.

Our reviewer Louise used this topper to add comfort to a standard mattress her landlord bought for her. Although she's a side sleeper and admits that she usually prefers a firmer base to sleep on, she noticed almost immediately that it made her medium-firm mattress feel a lot softer and cozier. And to her surprise, she really liked it as the foam adapted to her body to the point where her (sometimes achy) joints were cradled, cushioned, and supported. Usually, she overheats in bed as she's quite a hot sleeper, but thanks to the Coop Retreat Topper, she definitely didn't overheat and her mattress felt more breathable than normal. Admittedly, the sheer thickness of the topper did make her feel cozier in bed. With this in mind, if you have a mattress that's too firm for you, this is a great buy.

The best organic mattress topper

If your mattress is quite old but you're hesitant to replace it yet (or you don't have the money to replace it), let this be your answer. The foam is also CertiPUR-US certified, meaning it’s guaranteed to be low in volatile organic compounds, and therefore free from off-gassing odors. Yes, it's rated our best organic and eco-friendly topper for this very reason. So if this is important to you, know you know what to do.

Our reviewer Allessandra noted that this foam mattress topper is very supportive. She tested it atop her current eight-year-old mattress and to her surprise, it transformed her bed into an impressive sleep surface for just a couple of hundred dollars. She claims she had that new-bed feel. She said that when it came to pressure relief and support it felt like it was holding her spine and joints right where they need to be. As a side sleeper, she found it very comfortable but she also tried it sleeping on her front and back and said it worked perfectly.

Which type of mattress topper should I buy?

What your mattress topper is made of determines how soft or firm it'll be, along with how well it regulates your body temperature.

• Memory foam: The most common material is memory foam, which is made of polyurethane. It molds to the shape of your body and tends to offer excellent support. Modern memory foam is more breathable than past varieties, but sensitive sleepers may still find it hotter than other materials. 
• Latex: Latex mattress toppers are more breathable than those made of memory foam, so they're a great choice for people who tend to feel hot at night. They are also firmer and springier than memory foam models — making them a great choice if you wish your mattress was a little more supportive. Be sure to double-check that you're buying eco-friendly natural latex. Latex tends to be more expensive than memory foam. 
• Down/feather: You won't find many down feather toppers on the cheap, and they can aggravate allergies for some people. Sometimes the feathers can poke through the mattress cover, too. But down/feather mattress toppers regulate body temperature very well, and they offer a soft cloud of comfort atop the firmness of your mattress.
• Fiberfill or polyester blends: These "down alternatives" are perfect for those who love the feel of down feathers but either don't like to use animal products, are allergic, or want a more affordable product. However, these toppers are usually not as soft as others and can become lumpy over time.
• Wool: Natural wool fleece toppers are soft, durable, and often a great choice for allergy sufferers. That said, they tend to be one of the more expensive materials for a mattress topper. They're also not that thick, and won't offer as much pressure relief as other materials.  

FAQs

How thick should my mattress topper be?

Mattress topper thickness ranges from around two to four inches. For most side-sleepers, a thicker, softer mattress topper is best, because it better relieves pressure at the hips and shoulders. Meanwhile, a back sleeper in need of a firmer mattress might want a thinner topper. 

Note: The thicker the mattress topper, the more likely it'll push you beyond the limits of traditional sheets and into the specialized world of deep-pocket sheets, which are needed to cover an extra-thick mattress. We've more guidance on how to choose a mattress topper in our dedicated guide. 

Are thicker mattress toppers better? 

Hand in hand with the type of topper, knowing how much depth your mattress topper will add to your mattress is worth a second thought. If you already own a deep mattress, putting an additional 5cm on top may give your bed a Princess and the Pea feel and look. If this isn't what you’re after, then a flatter alternative would work better. In some cases, brands offer toppers in thickness variations. If you sleep on your side, the deeper the topper, the better, as it will cope well with pressure points, such as hips and shoulders to relieve any spine tension you may feel during the night. 

Can a mattress topper be cleaned?

Some (but not all) toppers are washable with covers that act as a protector. Doubling up means you won’t need to buy a mattress protector as well to shield from dust mites, spills, and stains. You'll want to consider whether you can machine wash or not. Are mattress toppers worth having? 

A mattress topper adds another layer to your sleep surface, which transforms an uncomfortable mattress into one worthy of staying on your bed a little longer. They're much cheaper than splurging on a super expensive mattress with some as little as $50. No matter your budget, buying a mattress topper as a substitute for replacing your old mattress is a great way to save money.

1. Figure out your sleep style

Choosing a mattress according to how you rest is the easiest way to guarantee yourself great a night's sleep. 

PS: The pillow you sleep on will also impact your sleep position. It might be worth looking into how to choose a pillow for the ultimate sleep set-up. For now, see which firmness rating you should choose based on your sleeping position: 

• Side sleepers are more prone to experiencing achy joints, especially around the hips and shoulders due to poor spinal alignment. See whether your knee overlaps the other or sits on top. Opting for a softer mattress you can sink into is the way to go, with medium-soft being the most recommended comfort grade. 
• Stomach sleepers might experience sore pressure points in the ribcage, knees, and elbows, as well as "general spinal discomfort." In order to alleviate this, you will need to find a firm mattress that supports you but also cushions in those sensitive areas. 
• Back sleepers are recommended a middle-ground mattress for maximum comfort: not too soft, not too firm. In the words of Goldilocks, make sure your mattress "is just right" in order to hold you tight in all the right places.

Choosing a mattress is far from a one-size-fits-all approach. We all sleep differently, but the reason our sleep experiences vary so much is that we all have particular needs.

Together we've broken down five common issues and how choosing the right sleep surface can solve them: 

• Tend to toss and turn or have a partner who does? "Good motion transfer" is the phrase you're looking for in a mattress. "Foam mattresses tend to be the top choice for motion absorption, though many sleepers also choose hybrid mattresses with extra-thick foam layers on top so both bed sharers can benefit from motion isolation, cooler sleep, and reliable support," says Dr. Po-Chang Hsu. 
• Experiencing back pain? "When dealing with chronic or frequent pain, it’s best to choose a mattress that can offer decent pressure relief," explains Hsu. "Such mattresses typically use adaptive memory foam. The material molds to the sleeper’s body, encouraging tension to spread out evenly and, thus, alleviating pain."
• Allergy sufferer? Consider latex as a filling (if you're not allergic to latex, of course) and designs marketed as hypoallergenic. This refers to a mattress that is made with materials less likely to trigger your sneezes and itches. Memory foam/hybrids will be good for you, too.
• Do you overheat at night? Find a mattress made of breathable materials. A big warning here is that memory foam is prone to giving off heat. As Dr. Po-Chang Hsu suggests, "It’s best to choose models that use cooling materials, such as natural latex, breathable coils, aerated or gel-infused foam, etc."
• Body weight: If you're significantly above or below average weight, you may want to pay special attention to the firmness rating. "Heavier individuals require more support, so they should go with firmer mattresses, and petite sleepers might want to get something softer," says Hsu. "This will help them prevent painful pressure points that often appear when the body presses into the mattress too much or not enough."

Okay, it may sound silly, but make sure your mattress is the right size. Admittedly, it can get confusing. Most mattress brands in the US offer sizes from twin all the way to California king. The UK keeps it a little simpler with single, double, king, and super-king. There are other sizes in-between standard variations that, if ordered incorrectly, may mean your mattress won't fit in its frame.

Let's address what's arguably the least exciting part of getting a new bed: the price. I know most of you won't be jumping for joy when you come to learn how much a mattress costs. The luxury kind (you know, the ones fit for kings and queens, as the saying goes) can range way up into the thousands, but you have to think of them as an investment. A good mattress will last you for years and even past its life expectancy if you take care of it.

Another advantage might depend on your body type or age. “For larger people, box springs can add more comfort, and for elderly, they are often high in height from the floor which makes it easier to get up and down,” Breus says.

For those affected by noises during their sleep, the box spring can be the very thing keeping you awake at night. “Box springs can be noisy,” Breus notes. An alternative, such as a memory foam mattress, produces almost no sound and could even potentially dampen the sound (although the mattress materials won’t totally soundproof your space). Another disadvantage to box springs, according to Dr. Breus is the fact that they tend to wear out and break.
