I've been sleeping with this white noise machine in my room for around two months now and it is a total game-changer. It's rated Amazon's bestseller for a reason, and it's nice looking and compact so even if you have a small nightstand like I do, it still leaves room for a drink, your phone, and other must-haves. And it's definitely not an eyesore.

This machine is self-explanatory to use and it offers so many different sounds. It has seven white noise sounds, seven fan sounds, and 10 relaxing sounds to be exact. You can set it on a timer for 30 minutes, 60 minutes, or 90 minutes and it can be turned up quite loud to drown out city traffic or dorm noise. It has a light that wraps around the top of the machine but this isn't bright enough to use as a reading light. You also can't use the light unless the noise is on, annoyingly. Otherwise, it's super affordable at less than $50.

Good to know
It doesn't come with a remote to control it from afar. You can choose from two colors and you can even use it with headphones if you share a room.

The best small white noise machine

If you want something that's impressively small yet still feature-packed — and that you can take on vacation with you — then this is the white noise machine for you. It's a little more expensive than our top pick from Dreamegg, which is annoying as it's much smaller, but it's only a couple of dollars more so I can let it slide. It also comes in five stylish pastel colors for you to choose from. This white noise machine is great if you have a super small nightstand and don't really have any room for anything else as it has a hanging strap so you can loop it over your bed frame or on a handle, or hang it elsewhere in your bedroom as you sleep.

I'm currently reviewing this white noise machine and while it's not as busy and feature-filled as the D1, for its size it's pretty impressive. It still has three timer settings with a light by each so you know which one is selected, and it's so handy that it doesn't need to be plugged in at all times. Mostly because I'm not always right beside a socket when I need to use it. It offers 21 soothing sounds in total, three white noises, eight nature sounds, and seven baby sounds. Don't let the baby sounds side of it put you off — it's definitely not just for children. It does have a handy child lock on the back of it though so that you can lock it to a setting if need be. When you turn it on, you'll need to press and hold the power button (same goes to turn it off) and it automatically plays white noise. It doesn't have a light per se, but it has small lights dotted around the machine.

Good to know
This white noise machine is super light at under one pound in weight. It has a 30-hour battery life but if you have the volume at the highest, it won't last quite that long. It does go nice and loud but not as loud as the D1, as you'd expect, otherwise, it charges via a USB-C cable which comes included (you need a USB plug). When it's charging, a red light will show at the top of the machine.

The Sweet Zzz white noise machine is what a hanging mobile is to a child's nursery. The only exception is that it doesn't hang above your head, and it looks a lot more stylish than shapes and colors hung on a rotating carousel. It also has a light surrounding it that changes in color and doubles as a night light. It's super compact so is great for smaller rooms and tiny nightstands, plus it's nice and portable so that you can take it on the go.

Our reviewer Christina typically uses her iPad to listen to YouTube video content in bed. However, the reality is that a) she CBA to hold the device, and B) it's blue light, which is counterintuitive to sleeping. So what she found she really needed was a white noise machine. This machine comes with 29 different sounds (some of which Christina really enjoyed) for example the fireplace crackling, sea waves, bird song, and an assortment of rain sounds. While others only kept her up at night (dripping tap, noisy fan, ticking clock). The device even has a memory function to remember your favorite settings so you don't have to trawl through the sound playlist. Her favorite feature is that you can set it to one of seven LED colors (at full brightness or dimmed). Say you're someone who knows they're going to fall asleep within a certain timespan of your head hitting the pillow, this white noise machine also allows you to set the timer for 30, 60, or 90 minutes. This function is really handy and Christina found that the sound gradually fades before being automatically turned off. Though it is a wireless machine, the built-in rechargeable battery lasts around 12 hours (or 7 if it's played continuously).

Good to know
In the event that you do want to crank up the machine to the highest volume, you will get an audible warning (beep) letting you know that you've reached the maximum noise level. Not that you'd want to though as it's pretty loud (and therefore counterintuitive). If you sleep next to someone who doesn't care for the white noise machine's benefits, you can also plug in some headphones for a solo sesh.

The best white noise machine on a budget

For a white noise machine that does everything it needs to well, all at just $23.99, this Homedics one is a great choice. Our staff writer Eve is currently testing this one for us and she has found it so easy to use, she loves how relaxing the sounds are, and says she’s never slept better. Her only complaint about it is that it's not the prettiest piece of tech out there, but if you are on a budget then nothing else compares. It's also Amazon's Choice white noise machine, FYI!

Eve is obsessed with how easy and uncomplicated this Homedics white noise machine was to use, thanks to the adjustable volume switch, timer button, and six different sound choices. These are thunder, rain, summer night, brook, ocean, and the classic white noise, which she all found to be very distinctive. They all also played really rhythmically, which she found soothing and perfect for going to sleep listening to. Her faves are the rain one and the summer night. The machine is also lightweight and portable, which makes it easy for her to move it between her bedroom and office. 

Good to know
This white noise machine can be powered by both battery and being plugged into a wall outlet, which Eve thinks is very useful. She has found the non-adjustable LED power light to be very bright in the dark, which means she has ended up sticking blu-tack onto it. Plus, the design is more practical than pretty, but she says that she can forgive this as she can’t imagine sleeping without it now.

The only reason that this white noise machine is last on our list is because we are yet to get our hands on one. Our editor is currently waiting for hers to arrive so that she can review it for us, otherwise, it's perfect if you're after a wake-up light but also want a white noise machine. Because who can fit both on their nightstand at once? Not us! This machine has seven sleep sounds for you to flip through, and it will wake you up naturally and help you wind down to sleep the right way. You can choose from five light colors and 25 levels of brightness while you get some good rest.

What reviewers say
With 2,000+ reviews on Amazon and a 4.3 out of five stars rating, this device is loved by people far and wide. Most shoppers say it's worth the money with lots of people claiming its snooze button is super helpful on those hard mornings. A lot of people compare it to the Hatch Restore which we're struggling to find to review RN, and say it's a lot better because there's no subscription required to use it. While it does offer seven different sounds, these can only be played for a maximum of 60 minutes so if you want a white noise machine to lull you to sleep through the night, then you're best to avoid this device. It also can tell you the temperature and humidity in the room you are in which is smart!

Good to know
This is understandably more expensive than the other white noise machines on our list because it's a 2-in-1 machine. It's also larger but it can charge your phone while you sleep which we think is a game-changer. We're yet to test this in person, so we'll update this guide once we've been using it for a couple of weeks.

What to consider when choosing a white noise machine

There are a couple of things you'll want to think about before deciding on the best white noise machine for you.

1. Where will your white noise machine go?
Firstly, consider where your new white noise machine will live. Make sure this is beside a socket, and that the length of the cord of your white noise machine will comfortably reach. 1. Height

What to consider when buying a single bed?

Size
An obvious first step is to make sure you have enough space for your bed. Bear with us, though, as this doesn't just mean widthwise and lengthwise. While the standard single bed measures 3 feet wide by 6 foot 3 inches long, don't assume this is the amount of space they'll take up. 'We pulled the color scheme of blues and greens from the curtains, but also wanted the nursery design to feel bright and colorful, so we also brought in some yellows and oranges, and lots of colorful toys. Since the walls are white, all of the colors added vibrancy and contrast.'

'My client was also a big fan of the classic Eames lounger, so we used that instead of the traditional nursery glider. It’s still very comfortable, and because it’s upholstered in leather, it will last for years!'

'Before we know it, our girls are 20 months old. I often get asked if they share a room, and I think they will continue for a little while until they get into their own big beds. But for now, we love that they see each other before they fall asleep, and are there together when they wake. Oh and the before nap antics are becoming hilarious!''

'Boy’s and girl’s bedrooms can have zones to fit each child’s personality. Include fun wallpaper, and establish a color palette to achieve balance, with a neutral base, and one or two accent colors.'

'Polka dots are great for a gender-neutral nursery, and you can also add stylized animal prints. Opt for color schemes based on yellow or green instead of typical ‘girly pink’ or ‘boyish blue’ motifs.'

1. Choose glow-in-the-dark designs to wow

Louvered shutters are a good alternative type of window treatment if there's not enough wall space to fold solid shutters right back, and if you want to be able to create a private space – ideal if the bedroom is overlooked – or to adjust the light levels during the day (perhaps the bedroom is south-facing and needs a spot of light filtering during the day?).

Tier-on-tier shutters like these allow you to keep the top half open and the bottom half closed during the day, too. 

White or neutral shutters will, of course, last the course as they grow older, but you can spray paint colorful ones in future.

The downside? Louvered shutters are effective at shutting out noise and drafts but light does filter through somewhat, something to bear in mind if the room is east-facing.

On a budget? Choose DIY measure and fit shutters like these, which come in at a fraction of the price of others.

10. Opt for Venetian blinds for a smart, grown-up look

If shutters are beyond your budget, Venetian blinds are a more affordable option that gives you a similar, streamlined look.

'When it comes to our bedrooms, privacy is key no matter the size of the window.' says Jason Peterkin, director at 247 Blinds.

'However, a good option for small windows is Venetian blinds, as they allow lots of light into the room which otherwise may be very dark - all whilst ensuring total privacy.'

'In order to give both maximum light and privacy, I’d suggest adjusting your blinds according to the sun.'

Easy to wipe clean, they come in a range of colors and finishes, although white or wood-effects will endure as your child grows and their tastes change. 

The downsides: they will rattle if the window is left open on a hot, breezy night, and they don't keep out as much light as louvered shutters, since light seeps in between the slats and around the edges.

Plus, of course, as with other similar window treatments, you have to be very careful of any cords with little ones around.

11. Roman blinds create a co-ordinated feel

If you love the look of layered fabrics, Roman blinds are a good choice for children's bedrooms, allowing you to pick up the colors in the fabric elsewhere in the room for a co-ordinated feel. Pick a plain finish to make it easier to redecorate around – anything patterned with a childish design will make it date quickly, too. Line the blind with blackout fabric to keep the bedroom dark and quieter in the evening and early morning, too.

The downside? Roman blinds have the cord issue that can be a safety issue with a younger child, so ensure yours is tethered well out of reach at all times; children don't find it easy/have the patience to raise these blinds correctly, either, so expect to find it sitting wonky unless you get involved...

12. Cute pattern and interest

If your child's first bedroom is temporary or if, perhaps, you're renting, it might be that you want to use the window treatment as an opportunity to add color and interest to the room.

In this case, a Roman blind is a good option, because it allows you to show off the fabric's design in all its glory, all of the time, raised or not. If you're on a budget, picking ready-made blinds over made-to-measure will stretch your funds further.

In a loft room, you have the gnarly problem of roof windows. Our advice? Roller blinds are undoubtedly your best choice if your budget has run out – there's a vast array of colors and patterns to choose from and, of course, many of them come in blackout options, although light will still seep into the room around the edges, however, this can be remedied in future if you add curtains to the mix. Again, watch the cord safety issue. 

A hot trend for interiors? The exotics: whether big, bold leaves, jungle themes or chinoiserie, so go for these prints if you want the latest look for your child's bedroom window treatment.

However, if you want to make a small window look bigger, we've got some expert insight for you. 

“If your window is quite small and you want to give the illusion of a bigger window, roller blinds can work wonders.' says Jason Peterkin, Director at 247 Blinds.

'Opting for a paired back, relaxed pattern or neutral color can help the window sit seamlessly in the room, tricking the eye into overlooking the size of the window.'

15. Let natural light flood in

If your child's room has a small window, is north-facing and isn't overlooked, and if your child isn't bothered by morning and evening light, undressing the window, perhaps with the simplest of gauzy white roller blinds will make the space feel brighter and bigger.

It will also allow you to show off the window itself – a plus if it's a good-looking one.

16. Double up with a blackout blind

If you love the look of an undressed window but, for all the obvious reasons, need a more practical window treatment for your child's bedroom, this is a good solution: gauzy curtains matched with a white blackout blind.

Why a white blackout blind? You can completely raise it during the day and, positioned on a white window frame, it becomes more or less invisible.

17. Hang curtains for a smart focal feature

There are all sorts of reasons to add your favourite bedroom curtain ideas to your kids room. Floor-length designs, pulled right back from the window, will make the window feel grander; blackout lined curtains will keep out the light, noise and draughts almost as effectively as solid shutters; and they're a good opportunity for adding a splash of colour and pattern to a room.

The downsides? When measuring for curtains, check the header – while we love the look of a curtain pole like this one, it will allow in more light than a rail will; curtains can also be victims to mucky fingers and are a hassle to clean, unlike shutters, for instance, which can be simply wiped; and of course, if your child's bedroom is small, full curtains will look bulky, so you may be better off picking a more streamlined finish.

18. Renting? Fit window film for added privacy

No one wants their child's bedroom overlooked, but adding a layer of window film to the window panes is a quick, affordable way to give it privacy.

Of course, even the best window film designs alone might not do the job, but it can be matched with every single one of the children's bedroom window treatments above. 

You can buy ready-made window film panels if you're on a budget, but made-to-measure ones, if a little more expensive, will give you a choice of designs and a better finish, particularly if the window is large and joins are inevitable with the ready-made designs.

In the third episode of Home Work season one, Andy and Candis take Kit, their only daughter, to a huge antique store. She has a good look around and is fully involved in the process of choosing the furniture for her bedroom.

Candis also shared a lovely craft project using real branches to make her own faux plant feature. 'I'll be honest, it's hard to find greenery that really looks amazing,' she says. 

'I've been doing this for a long time - I take real branches and really inexpensive fake flowers and I glue the fake blossom and blooms to the real branches,' she explains. 

The mom-of-seven cuts off the flowers and attaches them with a glue gun to spots on the branches where they naturally would go. She ends up with natural-looking branches of faux blossom that work perfectly in a glass vase on the mantel Kit picked out in the antique store.

This elegant accessory would work elsewhere in the home, in a hallway, or as a teenage girl bedroom idea.

The inspiration for the rainbow room came directly from Mel's little boy, who had recently outgrown his younger bed and nursery colour scheme. 'For his fifth birthday, we said he could have his room decorated and a new bed,' Mel tells us. 

'I don't know if he was influenced by seeing rainbows everywhere to support the NHS during lockdown, or if he loved the idea of bright colours, but he specifically said he wanted "rainbow stripes."'

Having listened carefully to her son's design brief, Mel got to work looking for wall paint ideas on Pinterest. A lightbulb moment came when she decided to create a mural going up the wall and across the whole ceiling, making it feel like you're sleeping under a real rainbow. 

After

Mel used Leyland Brilliant White paint on the walls to make the rainbow colours stand out, and seven tester pots from Decorating Centre Online, £56. She also used rolls of Pro Dec decorating tape, £3 per roll.

'I measured the space where I wanted the rainbow to sit, in line with our window and radiator,' Mel says. 'I then split the measurement into seven, taking into account the width of six strips of decorators tape to separate each of the colours.'

Next, she used the tester pots to paint each of the colours, giving each stripe two coats. The savvy mum then removed the tape while the paint was still wet to ensure the tape didn't take any of the paint with it.

She also gave the bedroom furniture a refresh, with a new bed from Argos, £139, plus a new wardrobe, Trofast toy storage, and accessories all from IKEA for £200. The bookshelf was old but they upcycled it using vinyl from Get Kooky, £23. This brings the total makeover cost to £421.

Living in a three bedroom home with two children may seem ideal; a room for each child and a room for the parents, right? Well in this day and age, a guest room is essential, as well as extra storage. So converting our guest room/wardrobe room into a nursery for my newborn son wasn’t an option. 

What was an option was converting my now toddler's very pink nursery into a shared bedroom for the two. I wanted a less gender specific kid's room idea, and something more inclusive that also retained characteristics of a girl’s room since my new son won’t be actively using it for some time.

I decided to design a space that would have two distinctive styles that worked together perfectly. I would miss all my DIY projects in the previous room, such as the DIY paper flowers, floral wreath, floral frame and butterfly lampshade, it was time for something new!

Usually, when designing a space, most designers, stylists or DIYers aim for one focal wall, point of interest or pop of colour. In bedrooms, it is usually the wall the bed is up against and in living rooms it is often the wall the tv is displayed on. It is often characterised by a pop of colour, striking wallpaper or an elaborate (or simple) display of shelves or art. 

In the interest of fairness and to give each child their own “side” I decided not to create one focal wall, but two. To achieve this, I chose two murals from ilovewallpaper.co.uk with different but very complimentary images. One mural was a bit more feminine with its pink tones, while the other more masculine with its darker and green tones. Murals are a great alternative to traditional wallpaper designs. They are often characterised by an image rather than a pattern and can be adjusted to fit the size of your wall. Unlike wallpaper which is generally designed to repeat across all walls, murals are typically designed to fit on only one focal wall. 

I then created two mood boards that would compliment each “side” of the room:

I sourced wood, rattan and bamboo accessories such as the large elephants head, rattan elephant and bamboo mirror. This gives an element of sustainability to the room. 

To prepare the room for the new look I had the task of removing the old wallpaper and dado rail. When we bought the house, the room had a very old wood chip wallpaper below the dado rail and  thin wallpaper on the top half. To save money, we opted to just paint over the wallpaper with a view to removing and skimming later down the line. 

I hired contractors to remove the wallpaper (which was fairly easy to remove using a steamer) and dado rail. Once removed we assessed the walls and concluded that a skim coat (a thin coat of plaster) would be appropriate. After the skimming I then gave the walls a mist coat myself. A mist coat is a thin watered down coat of paint which is brushed onto fresh dry plaster. The point is to create a solid base for the paint. If fresh plaster isn’t mist coated, depending on the moisture of the walls, paint can penetrate into it and may need multiple coats of paint or the colour could be altered.

After the mist coat I painted two walls with two coats of the paint colour. 

Then it was time to paper the walls. Fortunately the murals came in a size perfect for the walls without being customised. Each panel is numbered at the bottom and can be cut along the cut line and they are to be placed in the numbered order on the walls. 

Note, I find that the easiest way to apply wallpaper is to paste the wall, rather than the paper. That makes it easier to ensure the panels are lined up well before applying to the whole strip. 

Once complete I focused on dressing the room with pastel colours, including customising Ikea shelves that will be used to store books. I painted each spindle using left over sample paint pots in colours that compliment the Next, rainbow rug in the space. 

The elephant head, floating rattan hot air balloon and floating stork create fun 3D elements to give the space a wow factor. The teepee is intended to be a shared play space for both children and the desk area a suitable place for learning, reading and crafts. 

I really love how it all turns out and my toddler does to!

We’re not all lucky enough to have a designated playroom to hide away all the kids paraphernalia, but you can create a play zone that works just as well. This genius design by Emma @rosemounthouse grabbed our attention for its simplicity. All you need is an empty corner, some masking tape and a little imagination.

The before

This large living room was bland and underused. Emma's home is full of big rooms, but there wasn't enough space for a designated and separate playroom. While the dream of being able to shut the door on all the noise and colourful plastic toys may not have been possible, Emma decided to get creative with the space she had. By taking one corner of this room and giving it a separate purpose from the rest of the space, Emma's created an open-plan feel, and the result is pretty impressive.

The after 

How cute is this? This mini room within a room is a great way for the kids to have a play space downstairs that they can call their own, plus it's easy for you to keep an eye on them. 

And it's so simple to create the look. Emma pencilled the basic shape of a play house directly onto her wall. You could go as big or as small as you like, depending on the size of your space. 

Once she'd mapped out the perfect outline, Emma applied masking tape in simple straight lines, ensuring to press down hard to avoid any air bubbles or creases. The wall panelling was particularly useful here as it provided clear straight lines to act as a guide, but you could use a ruler or measuring tape for this. 

Once the outline is in place, you can really get creative. Emma used decorative stickers on the walls to create a fun and whimsical feel, but you could go wild and stick on doors and windows, or even a garden, to bring that playhouse feel to life. 

We love Emma's little play kitchen and dining set, but fill the house with whatever you have already. Sit back and let them love their new little home, while you can hopefully have some peace and quiet. 

And it's practical too – when your kids grow out of playing house (sob!), you can simply peel off the tape and your wall is restored - no extra painting necessary! That gets a big thumbs up from us.

Unfortunately, it's not as simple as you may think. Combine kids bedroom ideas with a shoestring budget, and this project may not appear feasible. But that's where we are here to help!

Rather than scooting them outside in the backyard or porch and leaving them to mix magic potions from mud, our interior design ideas are innovative and cost -effective.

You may be asking yourself why your child needs a separate space. Surely a bedroom will do just fine. But Adam Browne, Managing Director at Painted Furniture Company says: 'At a time when our homes have become so much more important, children need a calming space to call their own where they can sleep, relax, read, chat with friends or even do their schoolwork.'

1. Create a roaring scheme centered around wildlife

'Hand-drawn fonts and animal illustrations were designed to inspire and educate, crammed full of jungle characters and prints that kids can learn about with family and friends. We’ve given the animal characters a playful twist, seen in leaping tigers, mischievous baboons and chilled out cheetahs.', says Abigail Clarson, senior designer at Habitat.

'By experimenting with scale in oversized animal artworks, subtle botanic prints and small-scale geometrics, we’ve created an eclectic yet cohesive look that’s easy for parents to achieve through a mix and match approach.'

2. Create a playroom from thrift shop finds

If you thought you needed to kit your playroom design out with brand-new furniture and boutique soft furnishings - think again. The best decorations can often be found on online auction sites, flea markets and yard sales. This ground-floor playroom features hand-painted murals and plenty of handmade items, such as the tipi. 

‘The tree stump pouffe actually houses an old tyre,’ says Chloe Spillett, a homeowner from Essex, England.

‘I topped it with MDF and foam and covered with an old velvet curtain I found in a charity shop and some felt. 

OSB or oriented strand board is also an affordable way to create a feature wall for your playroom decor. Chloe says: 'It doubles up as a memo board. 

'The girls can pin their favorite things and artwork to it.’

This is one interior idea that you can get the kids involved in. However, we won't be held responsible for the messy fingerprints or excess paint you'll see in their hair for days. 4. Add 'mini-me' grown-up seating

6. Create a gender-neutral Scandi scheme

With a healthy Instagram spanning 11.4K followers, Home Decor and DIY mumma Brie from @Roostonrodgers certainly knows how to rule the roost when it comes to styling her suburban farmhouse in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

And we're sure you'll agree that this monochrome scheme is almost too cool for school!  Commenting on the playroom design idea, she says: 'Completing this playroom as one of my favorite projects!

'I love everything about this room, but the best part in my opinion is this accent wall.'

To create this look, she used a Herringbone wall stencil from STENCILIT, a gorgeous independent retailer that can be found on Amazon Handmade and Etsy.

Then, to build upon this iconic background, she used wood letters from Craft Cuts to create a slogan wall design displaying the phrase 'Play hard & be kind'.

The handmade letter board put together by Brie and her husband is often updated and features on her Instagram whenever she has news to share. From announcing her son's age to adding candid captions, this is a fun and easy way to update the space quickly.

On the other side of this kid's room idea, Brie has used a chalkboard design which blended in seamlessly with the black, white and cream decorations. Styled with an alphabet motif rugs, emulating this look is as easy as A-B-C!

7. Create a ground floor playroom under the stairs

For most of us, an under stairs storage space is an opportunity to hide a vacuum cleaner, a few pairs of shoes, cleaning products and a secret stash of wine. But have you ever considered that it may also be a great playroom idea?

Far from the snug squalor that Harry Potter was subjected to, this bright and airy space in your hallway will mean that you can keep an eye on your kids.

Whatever colour you choose for your playroom design, make sure the finish is, at the very least, wipeable. Paints with a low sheen are more durable than matt emulsions, and any marks can be wiped off without damaging the paint. If you do choose a paint with a matt finish, use a tester pot first to check if the finish is chalky. If it is, it won’t wipe down well.

17. Create a kids' playroom in a bedroom 

No room for a separate playroom? That doesn't mean you can't incorporate some of these playroom ideas into your child's bedroom. Here's how: 

• Choose a bed that looks like a fort, castle, racing car or can be easily transformed like this one with the addition of a fabric canopy
• Use the bed design as inspiration for other parts of the room (whether colour or theme)
• Stock up on tall storage that takes up very little floor space (whether tall cabinets or under-bed storage) then devote the room you have left to at least one large imaginary play toy – whether a racing track, play kitchen or play shop.

18. Install a climbing wall (really)

Take inspiration from this playroom idea created by Roselind Wilson Design and build your energetic kids a climbing wall fixed on to a solid wall, painted with black chalkboard paint. You might need to enlist the help of your child to plan the position of the holds – put the first couple in place then get them to stand on them and stretch to work out the best placement for the others. 19. Choose a bed that stimulates imaginative play

If you don't have the space for a separate playroom, the best way bar none to create one in your child's room is to buy them a raised bed with room underneath for them to create a den. Permanent curtains across the bottom half of the bed or loosely draped bedclothes is all you need. You may need to persuade them from sleeping there too, though. 

20. Add a dressing up rail to a children's playroom

If your children love to dress up, creating an area with a child-height clothes rail, trunk and low level mirror is a must. This one is by Great Little Trading Company, but if space is tight, pick one that can be fixed to a wall.

21. Pick flooring that stimulates play

Flooring needn't just be practical – why not find a rug that stimulates play, too? This hopscotch rug is a great playroom idea, is good fun to play on, and also helps to teach little ones numbers and balance, but yours may prefer a rug race track?

22. Gear up on roll up play mats in a shared space

If your child's playroom is within an open plan kitchen diner, you'll want a play mat that doubles up as storage, too. While we wouldn’t suggest going all out on a theme for your playroom, we love the painted mountains (pretty easy to do yourself with some masking tape – forget the scalloped bits if you’re not confident), and cloud lights and shelves. The soft play equipment area in the centre of the room is also a great idea. Have something made to measure with fabric covered foam blocks, or use floor cushions, gymnastic crash mats, or a crawling area like this one from Jump Bounce.

An area to chill out (or calm down) is a must in a playroom design, so make room for book storage that's accessible to encourage them to pick up (then hopefully put away, but who are we kidding?) their favourite reads.

If you are really dedicated, look for antique toys (shock horror: the Victorians also had children) – Ebay will be a good place to start. 31. Make use of an underused living room

The stork has delivered, but how do you create a fly makeover?

Wife of British McFly star, Tom Fletcher and more recently crowned queen of  reality TV show, 'I'm a Celebrity...get me out of here', Giovanni Fletcher shows us how she  created a jungle-inspired scheme.

Working with Wayfair, she opted for a base palette of soft grey bedroom design with muted pastels to create a calming environment for both mum and baby. 

They then off-set this neutrality will hints of mint and egg-yolk yellow to make the scheme pop. An upholstered nursing chair and footstool were introduced for a pop-up place to feed and cuddle.

3. Go wild with a western scheme

Howdy partner! If you want to create a scheme that's as cool as a cowboy, then look no further than a western-inspired space.

Starting off with a brown and beige space, add suede, leather and other natural materials, to create a retro scheme that takes its inspo from the seventies.

Hilary Duff is deeming her home office so yesterday!

Ahead of welcoming her third child with her husband, Matthew Koma, the 33-year-old star swiftly transformed the only house left in her Los Angeles home — an office — into a gender neutral nursery idea. With lots of books to store in our homes (and, like many people, collections that have grown hugely this year), when organizational genius Marie shared a book storage idea on Insta we wanted to check it out. There are actually three variations to inspire us all and we reckon you might have strong feelings about one of them.

Marie Kondo may have a method when it comes to tidying, but there’s room for manoeuvre still. As she says of these books, ‘There is no hard-and-fast rule when it comes to storing items. Experiment to see what storage method brings you joy.’

You will note, however, that for a neat display and one that looks good in a #shelfie, aligning the spines at the front of the shelf is a must-do to avoid a chaotic looking arrangement.   

The first arrangement in the set Marie shared is one where color is used to group the books. We’re big fans of this ourselves and it works on a single shelf as well as within a large bookcase where you can create impactful color blocks. Definitely joy sparking, we say.

Yep, this is the hot-button book storage tactic. Turn them so the spines are to the wall and have the white pages on display. The benefits? Your shelf leaves a calm impression rather than drawing attention (after all it might not be the focal point of your room), and you don’t have to organize an array of different hues in a pleasing fashion.

The downside is (as you’re no doubt pointing out in the strongest terms if you aren’t a fan) that you can’t pick a book out by title or author. If you do like the idea of reducing visual clutter this way, though, you could have an alphabetical system to make finding books stored this way easier. Then you’ll know you’re in the right sort of area and can hook them out with a finger until you get the right volume.

If this was our shelf, we’d lose the notes on the pages as we find they detract from the calm impression this display would otherwise create.

The third option here has the tallest book in the centre with the others roughly symmetrical by height. We like this arrangement as it gives an impression of an organized shelf without being too ‘arranged’. Librarians will tell you this isn’t the way to store your books, but even they’d have to admit it makes a great #shelfie.
