Usually, it’s her incredible outfits or dancing skills that fill me with envy — but luckily, her coffee maker is more attainable, and at an incredible price right now.

She's a singer known for hits such as Let’s Get Loud and acts too, starring in Hustlers, Shotgun Wedding, and The Mother. She's a queen at everything — so I’m not surprised she knows how to pick great coffee makers, too.

Jennifer Lopez’s Keurig coffee maker is a brilliant choice for anyone looking for a machine that’s affordable and makes cups that will rival your fave coffee shop. She’s not the only celeb with good taste in coffee machines, though — Vanessa Hudgens’ De’Longhi is barista-approved and one of the best you can get. 

Buying a coffee maker was a game-changer for me, especially since a morning cup of Joe feels as vital as my daily multivitamin.

Whilst testing coffee makers and other small kitchen appliances was my job, even I made mistakes when picking, using and maintaining my coffee maker so I've put together this guide to share the 10 things coffee afficionados need to know before taking the plunge for a home coffee-making setup.

If you're searching for the perfect best coffee maker, keep these helpful tidbits in mind and avoid the pitfalls I stumbled into.

Before buying a small coffee maker, consider these tips

When looking for a small coffee maker, there's a lot to choose from. Will a pod coffee maker suit your taste, or are you better off with a single-serve coffee maker? 

What I've learned over the years, both as an in-house appliance tester at Real Homes and a coffee-addict, will help nail down the 10 things you need to know before buying a coffee maker.

1. The color counts

Coffee makers take up valuable kitchen counter space, and will usually remain out for daily use. If you're going to take the plunge, pick one that not only has the functions you want (more on that later), but one that matches or complements your kitchen's aesthetic. You'll thank me for this later!

Luckily, there are many coffee maker offerings on the market, with many running flash or seasonal sales (our monthly coffee maker sale round-up is handy if a small budget is a big factor) and often, each model will come in multiple hues to suit every taste. From classic silver or black, to a range of pastel or jewel hues, whatever machine you pick, definitely choose a color you love. 

If our Beautiful by Drew Barrymore coffee maker review isn't proof that looks matter, we're not sure what will convince you otherwise. Color selections, like Thyme, from Drew's range, are very intentional, say interior designers and can be used as as stylish focal point in your space.

"Dark green, as seen in Drew Barrymore’s kitchenware, brings a grounded elegance to kitchens," says interior design expert Artem Kropovinsky. "Pair it with muted gold hardware in your kitchen for a touch of opulence. Incorporate earth-toned ceramics nearby to balance the depth of the green. The material of the item matters too. Consider if the appliance's material is easy to clean, easily scratched or scuff (kitchens are super busy, after all), and will it make the rest of the kitchen look glam, or gross?

2. Size matters

Size matters, especially if you're looking to maximize counter top space in a small kitchen. Save yourself the hassle of a return by measuring the dimensions of your counter and the space between your cupboard before you get busy shopping to see what you'll need for the machine itself and the coffee it'll brew. 

Don't forget to consider any clearance above or around machine you might need, as many will require regular water top ups or pod placement on top. 

If you're super tight on space, the Nespresso Essenza Mini we reviewed is the tiniest machine the brand offers and suitable for most small spaces. You can also style a beautiful little bar cart as a make shift coffee station you move in and out of your way as needed.  

3. Machines are customizable

Gone are the days when you had to either settle for the basics, or choose between one type of coffee maker or another. Sure, the simple start-and-stop mechanism was a unique selling point in our Lavazza A Modo Mio Jolie Plus review. 

But if you're on the hunt for the best coffee produced by a pod machine, we enjoyed the 10 brewing options during testing and review of the Morning Machine. For a machine that can do just about anything check out this Terra Kaffe TK-02 automatic espresso machine

You can opt for something low-key, or customize your preferences with helpful features (for example the Nespreso Vertuo Next we tested is Wi-Fi compatible). The coffee-making process can be as simple or intricate as you'd like it to be. 

4. Some coffee makers come with credentials

Unbeknownst to some, the Speciality Coffee Association (SCA) has requirements for brewed coffee quality based on factors such as proper water temperature and brewing time that determine whether or not a machine has met the proper standards. 

Is your prospective machine SCA certified? If not, it's important to see what factors prevented it from reaching this status — and how that will affect your morning cup of Joe. 

It's no biggie to most people, but it's definitely something that stood out in our Technivorm Moccamaster review, Oxo Brew 8-cup coffee maker test, and Zwilling Enfinigy drip coffee maker write-up. 

5. Coffee variety might be limited

A large cup of Joe from your local coffee shop will cost around $5, and more if you fancy a little extra syrup, whip, or want to upgrade to the guest blend. 

Making coffee at home will cost significantly less, even if it means putting in a little bit more elbow grease in your kitchen. Replacing that daily $5 store-bought cup of coffee with a bag of beans or K-cups will be more economical, but there are still costs to keep in mind. 

For example, Nespresso Vertuo makers are bar-coded, which means you're not able to buy alternatives for the machine. Are you willing to stick to one brand, or do you want to venture out of your comfort zone and try new things from time to time?

According to Millie Fender, an appliance expert and our former head of reviews,  buying a machine might mean you have end up having to stick to one coffee brand. She says, "Don't just look at the machine itself, take a look at the range of pods available and see if they sound like drinks you'd like."

If you like to be able to use a few, the best Keurig coffee makers sport more compatibility. 

Amazon coffee pods available offer a lot in the way of diversity if you like to taste test. This is where to buy Nespresso pods when you'd rather stay comfy at home than shop for groceries. 

6. You'll need to commit to cleaning it

Whether you're grabbing a coffee to pop in your travel mug for a long commute, or you're zipping into the kitchen between meetings, your coffee maker needs to be fresh and ready for action to make sure it tastes as good as possible, and to avoid any mold or grime build-up.

Luckily, you can clean your coffee maker with vinegar pretty easily.

Giving it a rinse through when you first unbox it is a must, too. New coffee makers, though they look spic and span, will usually need a good rinse or clean cycle run through it before first use. For what it's worth, this is what happens when you don't clean your coffee machine.

No matter what you opt for, you're going to have to learn how to descale a coffee maker and discern how often your machine requires a little TLC, lest you'd like to sip on some pretty gross java. 

As Chris Clark, founder of Brew Coffee At Home, previously told Real Homes, the signs it's time to descale your coffee maker include less coffee brewed than expected, leaks, your drink tastes bad or metallic, and it takes longer to brew.

Some machines will require a descaling solution, others allow you to use distilled white wine vinegar to get rid of the gross stuff so if you have a preference, read the instructions on cleaning and descaling before you buy it. Most retailers have their product instructions and manual's online for free.

7. The crema might not be real

For some coffee connoisseurs, the small details matter, including the crema. This is the light, frothy part of an espresso that we find at the top of the cup. According to Rachel Thomas, coffee expert at KitchenAid, this sensation happens when hot water is forced through the coffee grounds at high pressure, which ultimately emulsifies the oil of the coffee bean and produces tiny bubbles. 

As demonstrated in our Nespresso Pixie espresso maker review, small coffee makers do give consumers the option to froth themselves — but this particular machine is artificially spun. Does it make a difference? In my opinion, it does. That's not to say that you should be deterred from buying one of the best Nespresso coffee makers.

Overall, be prepared for home-brewed crema to look and taste a bit different to what you'd get in a coffee-shop.

8. There will be noise

Is this machine quiet — like whisper quiet — or is it a bit louder, perhaps what you'd expect when having a conversation? Or, is it so loud that you are going to disrupt not only your whole house but perhaps even your entire neighborhood? 

Don't be *that* neighbor at 6am. 

Usually, manufacturers will list the noise levels in decibels. This decibel level chart by Yale University is a good resource to refer to. Ideally, if you want to stay pals with the people next door, anything above 75 dB (imagine standing next to a piano or having to raise your voice to be heard) should be a no go. 

If you are concerned about excessive volume, my advice is to compare something like an Aeropress vs. French Press as these coffee makers are not only quiet but are also easy to transport.

9. You'll need to regularly dispose of pods or coffee

Although some brands are built with sustainability in mind, getting rid of their coffee remnants can be a challenge. Check whether your intended coffee maker's trash Can can go with regular recycling, or will it require a little extra work? 

For example, for a number of years, 100% of Keurig K-Cup pods have been recyclable, as they're made from recyclable polypropylene (#5 plastic). 

Though polypropylene is accepted throughout the country, that doesn't mean all facilities will accept used K-Cups, so you'll have to venture over to sources like BeRecycled.org to see what is permitted in your area.

10. Not all coffee makers are quick to use

Sometimes we can get a coffee within minutes with a K-Cup. However, other machines might be a tad more complex, as I learned when reviewing the Morning Machine coffee maker. 

Though the results are worth it, sifting through 10 brewing modes on an OLED screen for a cup of Joe might be too much for someone who just wants to make it to work by 9am. 

Consider complexity of machinery and how long you have to whip up your morning brew when buying a coffee maker for use at home.

The Cuisinart grind & brew single-serve coffee maker is the coffeephile's answer to filter coffee without the fuss. No soggy papers, no waiting around for a drip-by-drip drink. This coffee machine cuts down time and clean-up (to a certain extent, but I'll come to that later).

Though most would classify it as a single-serve coffee maker, this 3-in-1 small coffee machine takes beans, pods, and grounds. Clever right? But just like those magazine quizzes I used to do as a teen, it really depends on what type of user you are to determine what coffee-making route you'll take.

If flavor is your top priority, you'll want to use it as a bean-to-cup coffee maker. But if you appreciate variety (and don't want to keep changing the hopper), use it like a pod coffee maker. Don't want to break up that relationship with your independent roastery/coffee bar, and are intimidated by whole beans? Get them to grind your favorite coffee cherries so you have a familiar-tasting cup without paying for their overheads or queueing up for a cup. I tested the Cuisinart grind & brew single-serve coffee maker to see whether it could replicate my favorite shop-bought sip in the comfort of my own home.

What I thought of the Cuisinart Grind & Brew Single-serve Coffee Maker

The Cuisinart grind & brew single-serve coffee maker is a great machine for users who want a freshly ground, filter coffee maker experience without the wait (or mess of filter papers). It's a flexible machine with a reusable filter that allows you to use either whole beans or ground coffee. Most surprisingly, it can even be used as a Keurig coffee maker so you can mix and match your brew based on availability, budget, or preference. However, for transparency, we didn't have any Keurig pods on hand to test this feature. If you want to go down this avenue, we recommend the Keurig Coffee Lovers' Collection Sampler Pack, available on Amazon.

The machine has a small footprint, making it a good choice for rental kitchens. Nonetheless, the drip tray could be wider to accommodate larger cups, and an adjustable tray height would improve the overall design (especially to prevent coffee from splashing down the side).

Mechanically, the conical burr crushes coffee beans effectively, resulting in an espresso shot that is strong and has a decent amount of crema. Grinding is on the loud side at 80dB, compared to a 41-55 dB brew.

The 7-pound machine is well-packaged in a molded pulp container to prevent any damage in transit. Though there is some plastic packaging, it's not excessive, but you should keep it away from children and pets.

Using the Cuisinart Grind & Brew Single-serve Coffee Maker

If you've read one of my coffee maker reviews before, you'll know they are pretty thorough. However, this is such a simple machine to use that it's a comparitively short.

Understanding the control panel

The control panel has four buttons that you'll need to familiarize yourself with, and although there's no LED screen, the icons are pretty self-explanatory:

• Power ON/OFF: Designed to turn the brewer on and off
• Grind button: Press to automatically start/stop grinding coffee into the filter cup.
• Add water indicator: This button will illuminate red when water levels run low
• Brew size buttons: Select 8, 10, or 12 oz cup sizes to begin brewing

Inserting the water filter

This coffee maker comes with a charcoal water filter that eliminates chlorine, bad tastes, and odors from tap water. I live in a hard water area, so this was a nice bonus to have. This was one of the parts that came in a polybag and does involve some time to setup.

1. Soak the filter, fully immersed, in cold tap water for 15 minutes. 
2. Lift the water filter holder out of the water reservoir. 
3. Press down on the filter compartment and pull it toward you to open.
4. Place the filter into the holder and snap it closed. Be careful – it's a little fragile.
5. Flush the filter by running cold tap water through holes in the bottom of the compartment for ten seconds.
6. Allow the filter to drain completely.
7. Slide the water filter holder back into the channel in the water reservoir, pushing it down to the base of the unit.

Just so you know, additional charcoal filters can be bought from Cuisinart. It is advised that you change these once a month. Once the filtration system is set up, you can fill the tank with 48 ounces of water from your faucet. I like that it's removable so you don't have to lift the whole machine and place it under the tap (an obvious electrical risk).

Cleaning the machine for the first time

You'll want to run a rinse cycle (without coffee). To do this, press the power on button. Then, open and close the brew head (being careful not to touch the sharp needle). Next, place a mug on the drip tray. Press the 10 oz. Brew Size button to begin the brew cycle. Hot water will start to dispense in the cup. When the process is complete, you can discard the wastewater and begin brewing!

Using the grinder

For optimum results, you'll want to make coffee using beans. This is a pretty easy 4-step process that takes less than two minutes from start to finish. To begin, remove the bean hopper lid and add your beans.

By the way, in case you're frantically hunting for it — your HomeBarista Reusable Filter Cup pops out of the left side of coffee maker. Open the lid of the filter cup and insert it into the holder below the grinder.

Holder in? Great! Press the Power button to turn on the unit. The Power and Grind buttons will light up. Then, press the Grind button to start grinding. The grinder is set to automatically turn off once the filter cup is full.

By the way, Cuisinart says that If you buy large portions of beans, separate them into one-week portions and store them in airtight containers in your freezer. You can also preserve freshness by minimizing exposure to air, light, and moisture.  And, once beans are removed from the freezer, keep them in a sealed container at room temperature.

Making coffee

With ground whole beans
To make coffee, remove the filter cup from the grinder holder, close the lid, and pop it into the brew chamber. FYI, it doesn't need to click or snap into place, but this would have given us some reassurance.

Close the brewer head, pop your cup or travel mug underneath, and select your chosen brew size. At this point, it's important to note that the brewing process can be stopped during brewing. Simply press the button again to cancel your coffee order.

When your drink is ready all of the brew buttons will be unlit. The Grind button will remain on for use until the brew head lever is opened to begin the brewing process. After brewing, raise the handle and remove the filter cup. Be careful as it will be hot (I learned the hard way). Replace the capsule holder, making sure that the arrow on the capsule holder rim aligns with the arrow on the brewing chamber. Gently push the capsule holder to snap into place.

Packaged grounds
Using shop-bought grounds isn't too dissimilar. Obviously, instead of using the grinder, you can use the included scoop to measure your preferred amount (making sure that it doesn't exceed the max line). The maximum fill is roughly 2.5 scoops or 0.5 ounces and you don't need to tamp your grounds.

So, how did it taste? Temp-wise they range between 192 -198 degrees Fahrenheit. For reference, I tend to wait until mine is around the 140 mark before drinking. Nonetheless, I did miss the ritual of warming my cups on top of the machine (it doesn't have this feature). Taste-wise, all three sizes had good strength, and I'd be happy to serve my guests using this machine.

Descaling the coffee maker

If all button lights are flashing in sequence — it's time to clean the coffee maker.

To descale the coffee maker (or decalcify it, per Cuisinart's terminology), you'll want to clean your coffee machine using vinegar. Having tested my fair share of coffee makers, it's quite refreshing to see that the brand advocates using this affordable cleaning supply. Amazon's Happy Belly white distilled vinegar works out at just eight cents per fluid ounce. Note, that some manufacturers consider this a coffee maker cleaning mistake, and in some cases, it can actually invalidate your warranty if they find out!

They recommend rinsing your coffee maker with vinegar at least once a month (maybe more frequently if you live in a hard water area). If you've never done this before, follow this 10-step method:

1. Fill the water reservoir with 13 oz. of white vinegar and 26 oz. of water.
2. Place a mug or other container on the drip tray.
3. Open and close the brew head. 
4. Press and hold the Power and 8 oz. buttons for two seconds to start descaling
5. Discard the contents of the mug into the sink.
6. Repeat this process until the 'Add Water' light comes on.
7. When descaling is complete, the 'Power' and 'Grind' buttons will light up
8. Discard any remaining diluted vinegar into the sink.
9. Repeat step one three times using fresh water in place of the vinegar mixture. This will remove any residual vinegar taste.

Cleaning the bean hopper and burr grinder

Hopper
Before unlocking and removing the burr grinder, make sure you've emptied all of the
beans from the hopper. The hopper can be wiped down with a soapy, damp, non-abrasive microfiber cloth, making sure any dish soap residue is rinsed with clean water. Next, use the scoop brush included to clean the grind outlet to clear away excess grounds and wipe with a wet microfiber cloth.

Burr grinder
The burr grinder is not dishwasher safe, so will need to be hand washed.

Cleaning the grinder

When the Grind button indicator is flashing, it means that your grinder is overloaded. To unclog it, press the power button and unplug the unit. Wait five seconds, the grind button should illuminate to grind again. If the Grind indicator is still flashing — remove the burr grinder and clean it well.

Cleaning the filter cup

While we hand-washed the funnel/capsule holder, Cuisinart says it is top-shelf dishwasher safe (just be sure to use a low-temperature / eco cycle). 

Cleaning the exit/piercing needles

We didn't experience any clog-ups during our test, but Cuisinart advise that any coffee-ground congestion can be irrigated using a paper clip. This 220-piece pack of paper clips from Amazon means you'll never be without.

Cleaning the drip tray

The Cuisinart grind & brew single-serve coffee maker has a removable drip tray which makes this component easy to clean. We hand-washed it with dish soap and warm water, however, you can pop the tray and plate into the dishwasher. Cuisinart advises that you don't clean the tray with steel wool pads or abrasive cleaners/materials.

Is the Cuisinart Grind & Brew Single-serve Coffee Maker right for you?

If you don't want to invest in a coffee grinder, or if a flashy bean-to-cup coffee maker is too big (or expensive), kill two birds with one stone by investing in this small kitchen appliance. At under $150, it's a decent machine that can make varying sizes of black coffee. If you're looking for an espresso maker, or a machine that can make white coffee drinks — this isn't for you.

How we test coffee makers

Packaging: How well are the machine and accessories protected in transit? Do the parts come wrapped in unnecessary amounts of plastic?

Weight: How easy is it to carry from my front door to the kitchen?

Setup: How easy is it to assemble the machine (if applicable) and make a coffee? How long does this process take? Does it require instructions?

Brew quality and grind: Here, I make each drink and assess the strength, bar pressure, extraction, and time it takes to make each drink.

The best reason to buy a Keurig K-Classic Coffee Maker has to do with your daily habits. It’s easy to go to your local Starbucks or Dunkin’ to grab a quick coffee in the morning, but $5 a day adds up — after a week of coffee that’s roughly $35 down the toilet. Now, that’s not to say you can’t treat yourself to your favorite cappuccino or espresso, however, for those more simple cups of joe, you can get high-quality coffee from the comfort of your own home with the click of a button with a Keurig coffee maker.

When it comes to kitchen gadgets like coffee machines, the key is to find one that is simple, affordable, and effective. I’ve tried a few of the brand's small coffee makers, and have nothing but praise for these single-use coffee machines. However, I was recently introduced to the Keurig K-Classic Coffee Maker which definitely ranks at the top of my list for making a cup of coffee.

Right now, the Keurig K-Classic Coffee Maker is on sale for $109.99, down from its original price tag of $149.99 (saving $40 or 27% whichever way you want to calculate it). So there’s no better time to get it and see how it can elevate your AM routine.  

TLDR: What we thought of the Keurig K-Classic Coffee Maker 

The Keurig K-Classic Coffee Maker is a more basic model compared to the brand's other machines (they sell both filter coffee devices and pod coffee makers), but it’s versatile and can be used to brew coffee, tea, and hot chocolate. With that said, you won’t find an LCD screen or a "strength" button, but it does have indicator lights to alert you when you need to add more water and when the machine heats up. As for the noise level, it’s a bit louder than the Keurig K-Duo, which we tested, but nothing too extreme. This convenient coffee maker checks all the boxes and is especially ideal for on-the-go boss babes who don’t have time to wait around. It's even tall enough to accommodate a travel mug so you don't need to decant a hot drink from one cup to your insulated container.

Unboxing the Keurig’s K-Classic Coffee Maker

You’ve probably guessed it, but the first step to using any new Keurig machine is to open it or as we like to call it — “unboxing” time. From my experience, Keurig is a bit inconsistent when it comes to the amount of packaging it uses for each coffee maker. Sometimes it’ll be too much, which was the case when we tested K-Select, and sometimes not enough like with this one. Despite the lack of packaging, the machine was in pretty good condition and ready to assemble. 

This is the fourth Keurig coffee maker I’ve tried over the past few months so I know what to do like the back of my hand. Unlike the other machines, this K-Classic did not come with a water filter. The directions stated that if you had one, then you could use it, but there wasn’t one included in the box. 

With that said, I filled the water in the reservoir up to the maximum fill line which would last me one cleansing brew and at least three to four more cups. Similar to the other Keurigs, the cleansing brew involved pushing down the needle as if I were brewing a cup of coffee and then clicking the smallest cup size. After about four minutes, the water heated up as advertised and made its way through the machine into my cup. 

Using the Keurig’s K-Classic Coffee Maker 

If I had to use two words to describe the Keurig K-Classic Coffee Maker, they would be “easy” and “simple.” At the top of the machine, there are three buttons with different symbols indicating the cup sizes. To make sure you click the appropriate button, you’ll want to refer to the manual for guidance, however, it’s pretty self-explanatory with 6 ounces being the smallest cup and 10 ounces as the largest size. 

Once I was familiar with the buttons, I put in my single-use coffee pod and clicked the medium cup (8-ounce) button. Since I just did the cleansing brew, the water was already hot so my first cup brewed in seconds and was finished in less than a minute. Normally, the water takes about four minutes to heat up and you’ll know when it’s ready once the size buttons glow blue. 

As it brewed, I noticed it was very quick and quiet. There was a bit of squeakiness here and there, but quiet enough to where I could have easily forgotten I was making a cup of coffee with a machine.

After it was finished brewing, I took a sip and it was delicious. Out of all of the makers I’ve tried so far, the coffee from this one tasted the most "professional-grade" as if I went to an artisanal coffee shop. From the aroma to the look of the drink, I was thoroughly impressed especially considering it took less than five minutes to make from start to finish.

Key features of the Keurig’s K-Classic Coffee Maker 

Smart Start

Just like every other Keurig machine, the K-Classic has a Smart Start feature. Essentially, this allows you to heat and brew the coffee in one single step without having to click multiple buttons and wait around. Simply place a mug on the removable drip tray (which holds 8 ounces of accidental brew BTW), insert a K-Cup® pod, lower the handle, and select the brew size. Once this is done, it’ll automatically brew when it’s ready.

Auto-Off 

This feature is already on once it’s plugged in — it shuts off the coffee machine two hours after the last brew just in case you forget to do so — this came in handy when I was in a rush in the morning to get to work or to the gym.

How to clean and maintain the Keurig K-Classic Coffee Maker  

After daily use, you’ll reach the time when you should clean your Keurig machine. The brand suggests powering down the machine and unplugging it before cleaning it for your safety. The water reservoir and lid can be placed in a dishwasher on the top rack only or you can hand wash them. If you opt to hand wash, make sure to thoroughly rinse out the soap until it’s completely gone. And to try, you’ll want to let it air dry since using a cloth runs the risk of trapping lint inside the machine.  

 How does Keurig K-Classic Coffee Maker rate online? 

The Keurig K-Classic Coffee Maker was initially sold through Keurig and has a rating of 4.1 out of five stars with reviewers saying it has “great features” and is “easy to operate.”

A few four-star ratings and lower expressed their disappointment with the lack of cup sizes, wishing it would go up to 12 ounces and above and it had a clock and automatic timer feature.

What's it like in comparison to other Keurig machines? 

In comparison to the K-Select Coffee maker, neither have the ability to make espressos or lattes, however, the K-Select has the option to choose the brew strength and a slightly larger water reservoir. Lastly, when it comes to saving money and power, the K-Classic has an energy saver auto-off feature whereas the K-Supreme does not.

 Is the Keurig K-Select Coffee Maker right for you? 

I think the Keurig K-Classic Coffee Maker is a viable option for the people who want a cup of coffee without the frills — this isn’t an espresso machine and definitely doesn’t have a milk frother for those lattes.

That being said, you can save around $45 by buying the Keurig K-Classic coffee maker and the respective (separate) frothing machine as a bundle right now. While it's not searchable, this proposition did pop up when I went to put the coffee machine in my basket. Also note, that when I did this to test the validity of the offer, another promo also popped up prompting me to enter code: FREEPODS4ME which entitles you to two free boxes of pods with the purchase of this coffee maker. And we all know that complimentary coffee that you didn't have to buy tastes better.

It’s similar in size to the brand's other models and is compact enough to fit on small countertops right next to other common small kitchen appliances, like toasters and air fryers. If you’re looking for a machine that brews only individual serves, this is the right maker. However, if you’re looking for a larger size range or a carafe for an old-fashioned brew, then you’ll want to check out the Keurig K-Duo Single Serve & Carafe. 

This coffee machine by itself is currently on sale for $119.99 on the brand’s website. However, you can find the same version on Amazon for $109.99 — you’re better off purchasing it there if you want to save even more.

How to clean a Keurig coffee maker

Step 1: Descale your Keurig coffee maker

Cleaning your coffee maker to get rid of calcium and mineral deposits isn't something that needs to be done every day, but rather every three to six months (or when the indicator light tells you to). We've got a whole guide on how to descale a Keurig coffee maker, and there's also general guidance on how to clean a coffee maker with vinegar.

FYI — using vinegar to clean your beverage maker won't make it reek, so don't stress. There's no need to buy a "special" brand either. I always add Heinz distilled white vinegar to my basket on Amazon after using my coffee maker for a little while.

Step 2: Clean the external parts of your Keurig coffee maker

First, unplug your Keurig coffee maker before cleaning any of the components. The brewer housing and other external parts (including the drip tray and drip tray plate) can be cleaned with a damp, non-abrasive, lint-free cloth.

WARNING: Never immerse the brewer in water or other liquid cleaning agents.

Step 3: Clean the Keurig K-Cup holder (including the funnel and needle)

To retrieve the portion pack holder assembly out of the unit, lift the brewer handle to open it. You'll want to grasp the top of the K-Cup holder with one hand. And, with the other hand, push up on the bottom of the K-Cup holder until it pops off. Now, you can either put it in the dishwasher (on the top shelf at a low temperature) or, handwash it using your favorite dish soap and warm water. Remember to use an unfragranced cleaner here. Something strong-smelling is a coffee maker cleaning mistake that can affect the flavor of your next brew.

WARNING: There are sharp needles that puncture the K-Cup above and below the K-Cup holder, so don't put your fingers in the assembly housing.

At this point, it makes sense to inspect the funnel and needle too. The funnel can be removed from the K-Cup Holder by pulling on it until it snaps off. BTW, this can either be cleaned on the top shelf of your dishwashing device, or you've guessed it — manually with dish soap and water. 

The exit needle is located on the inside bottom of the K-Cup holder. If this gets clogged up with coffee grounds, you can clean it with a paper clip by extracting the spent java.

To reassemble everything, align the K-Cup holder with the opening using the two front ribs as a guide, and snap it into place from the top. To replace the funnel, just snap it back onto the K-Cup holder assembly.

Step 4: Clean the cold water reservoir

Obviously, you'll want to make sure there's no water in the vessel when you're doing this.

To access the cold water reservoir (aka the water tank), lift the lid. Then, remove the water level guide. From here, you can clean the inside of the container with a damp, lint-free cloth. Replace the guide, and close the lid when you're done.

After everything is squeaky-clean, you can fill it with fresh water (filtered is preferred to avoid hard water stains from building up again). But don't overfill it.

How to empty the internal hot water tank

One way to ensure you have the freshest-tasting coffee is to purge the old water out of the machine. To do this, ensure the coffee maker is plugged in, but switched off. Make sure the cold water reservoir lid is closed. Then, what you'll do is place a mug on the drip tray, and press and hold the BREW button until all the water is dispensed. At this stage, you can also make use of one of the Keurig coffee maker cleaners we recommend below.

WARNING: There will be a delay of around 3–4 seconds before the water begins to dispense.

Products to help clean your Keurig coffee maker

When it comes to kitchen appliances, especially coffee makers, the key is to find something that's simple yet effective. In my eyes, a good coffee maker needs to be easy to use. Quick and effortless takes the cake — and yes, you really don’t need one with a fancy espresso maker, milk frother, iced coffee feature, etc. if your goal is to have a simple cup of coffee in the morning (or any time of the day, really). 

So, I tend to go for a single-serve coffee maker, as these require the press of just one button usually, and your coffee is ready for you to enjoy within a minute. Talk about convenience. So, when I started testing the Keurig K-Select Coffee Maker it was pretty much music to my ears (or whatever the equivalent is for my taste buds) as it's pretty simple to use, with four cup size options and a button that you can press for extra strong coffee. Because Mondays mornings exist.

I’ve tried a few Keurig coffee makers in the past, and I have nothing but praise for every machine I've reviewed from this brand. And surprise, surprise, the Keurig K-Select Coffee Maker is no different. It might be the most basic one I’ve tried thus far, but it's perhaps a new favorite because of that. Oh, on top of being simple to use, it'll also look lovely on your countertop as it comes in six colorways. It retails at $149.99, and it has a nice big water tank (unlike other smaller Keurig machines that you need to refill after each cup) to save you time and effort.

Here's what else I loved about it (and why you need to invest).

TLDR: What I thought of the Keurig K-Select Coffee Maker

Although the Keurig K-Select Coffee Maker is a basic model, it can brew a hot cup of coffee in less than a minute. It’s not too complex in terms of its design as there’s no LCD screen. Instead, there are buttons for the cup sizes and brew strength. It’s a bit louder than the Keurig K-Duo that I also tested, but nothing that’ll wake up everyone in your apartment or house.

As I've already mentioned, it has a rather sizeable water tank which means you don't have to refill it often (winning!) and its strong coffee button is a true game-changer. I love how it looks on my countertop and that even though it's quite basic, it still comes in a range of colors.

Unboxing the Keurig K-Select Coffee Maker

As with other Keurig machines we’ve tried, the first step is to unbox and assemble. This machine came with a lot of cardboard and plastic/styrofoam wraps on each of the parts (not very eco-friendly), but I digress. Once everything was unwrapped, it was time to get to work. 

I started by setting up the water filter. By this point, it’s like clockwork to set up the filter since I’m so used to it. I got my cup, submerged the pod for five minutes, and then put it in the tube and placed it in the reservoir. 

After that, I filled the water in the reservoir up to the maximum fill line to ensure I had enough to go through for the initial cleansing brew and beyond. It involved plugging in the device, pushing down the needle as if I were using a single-use pod, and then clicking the small cup (6 oz.) size. It took about three minutes for the water to heat up as advertised and then it was ready to go. 

Once the cleansing brew was finished, it was time to brew my first cup. 

 Using the Keurig K-Select Coffee Maker

The first cup I made was a standard cup of coffee. Unlike other machines, this one is more basic with four buttons indicating the different sizes and strengths. The buttons don’t have anything written on them, except symbols displaying the size. You’ll want to refer to the manual for guidance on the ounces to make sure you’re brewing the correct amount. 

I put in my single-use coffee pod and clicked the small mug (8 oz.) button.  Since I just did the cleansing brew, the water was already hot so my first cup brewed in seconds and was finished in less than a minute. 

I decided to go for a normal brew this time around and it was delicious and exactly how I like my coffee — rich and nutty. 

By this point, the light came on that my reservoir was already in need of more water. I was a bit surprised since I only brewed two cups at this point, but it only took 30 seconds to refill it. 

For my next cup, I decided to utilize the "strong" button for a stronger brew. Now, this was extremely dark — almost too much for my liking, but if you want strong coffee, then this is for you.

If you don’t want this setting on, you can disable it by turning the brewer off while it’s plugged in and pressing down on the strong and large mug buttons for three seconds. The blue light will go off indicating that it’s no longer on. To put it back on, simply repeat those steps again. 

Strong Brew
A stronger brew is achieved with a smaller water-to-coffee ratio. On the Keurig K-Select, there’s a "strong" button that can be pressed to enhance the strength and intensity.

After consistent use, it’ll come time to wash your Keurig machine. The brand suggests powering down the machine and unplugging it before cleaning it. The water reservoir and lid can be placed in a dishwasher or hand washed. If you choose the latter, make sure to thoroughly rinse out the soap so you’re not left with any remnants. Make sure not to use a cloth to dry the inside as lint may linger and affect the quality of the machine.

It’s similar in size to the brand's other models and is small enough to fit on tiny counter spaces and tucked away into a corner when not in use. If you’re looking for a machine that brews a wider range of sizes or has a carafe for a more old-fashioned brew, then you’ll want to look into other models, like the Keurig K-Duo Single Serve & Carafe. This coffee machine is currently on sale for $139.99 on the brand’s website. However, you can find the same version on Amazon for $109.99 — you’re better off purchasing it there if you want to save 30 bucks. 

I took a look into the Keurig K-Elite single-serve coffee maker to see how it worked, if it brewed a delicious cup of coffee, and whether or not it was worth the price tag. Generally speaking, I’m not one of those people who need coffee every morning, however, when I want a cup I want it to be quick and delicious... cue reviewing this Keurig coffee maker.

While I could look into one of the best all-singing, all-dancing small coffee makers, or even boil a pot of water with a tea kettle to make a cup of coffee, the processes involved with these can be time-consuming. And frankly, I don’t have the patience for that. That’s why I made it my mission to test this pod coffee machine and see whether or not it could be a staple in my kitchen from here on out. 

The K-Elite normally retails for $189.99, but right now it’s on sale for $129.99 — that’s a pretty good deal if you ask me, but what it really comes down to is how well it works. 

TLDR: what I thought of the Keurig K-Elite 

The K-Elite is ideal for those who want a simple cup of coffee made from a standard single-serve coffee machine. Whether you like it hot or iced, this machine allows for versatility with the ever-popular morning beverage. And its intuitive design is optimal for those with morning brain, who don’t have the capacity to think fully at the crack of dawn with its easy-to-click buttons and lighting features. If you’re not looking for a full espresso maker or coffee bar to have in your home, but a more plain and simple coffee maker, then this is for you.  

It’s worth noting that you don’t need to apply much pressure to puncture the pod so don’t slam down the machine. You’ll need to refill the reservoir every so often, roughly every four or five uses depending on how big your cups are. A blue light will appear when your reservoir needs a refill. And since there is an included water filter, the machine will likely have higher longevity than one without, so you’re getting a better bang for your buck.

If you’re looking for a more complex machine, then you’ll want to consider looking into other Keurig makers that have additional features like an automatic milk frother, an iced setting, multi-stream technology, etc. You can also just brew hot water, whether you need it for a bowl of oatmeal, soup, or another recipe. To do this, simply take the pod out of the designated slot and solely brew the water to use — easy as that.

Unboxing the Keurig K-Elite

Similar to all of the Keurig’s we’ve tried in the past (like the K-Duo or K-Café Smart), each of the parts, including the machine and water filter, arrives individually wrapped. After they are unwrapped, it takes less than five minutes to put everything together.

For the Keurig K-Elite, the reservoir is found on the left-hand side which has a max fill line to indicate how much water to put inside. Similar to any new appliance, you’ll want to set up the water filter and do a test run, especially for a coffee maker to clean out the insides so it’s ready for use. 

The instructional booklet that came with the machine offered step-by-step guidance on how to do this. But from using similar machines in the past, I really didn’t need to refer to it much because they are all nearly the same in terms of operation and set up at least on the basic level. 

To set up the filter, I soaked it in water for five minutes per the directions, rinsed it thoroughly, and placed it in the filter, which then went inside the reservoir — super simple. 

The cleansing brew for this machine is nearly identical to any other Keurig machine. It runs 8 ounces of hot water through it as if you were brewing a cup of coffee, however, this time you don’t use a pod. The initial heating process took roughly three minutes and after that, it was ready to officially brew.  

Test 1: making a cup of single-serve coffee

Since my reservoir was already filled up from my test brew, I simply placed the pod in the designated area and pushed it down. It didn’t require much effort to push down and it was so quiet that I double-checked if I pushed it down enough (indeed I did). 

For this cup of coffee, I wanted it to be on the strong side. I pressed the "strong" button and then hit the size I wanted — you can choose from 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 ounces. Unlike the K-Duo Single Serve & Carafe Coffee Maker, this machine didn’t have the sizes spelled out. Instead, there were little symbols to represent the different sizes, but they are labeled in the instruction manual. 

In terms of the temperature, you have the ability to change how hot it’s brewed. I kept mine at 192 degrees Fahrenheit, but the range varies from 187 degrees Fahrenheit to 192 degrees Fahrenheit. When it was ready to brew, it automatically filled my mug which rested on the drip tray — the process took all of four minutes, which was impressive. 

After a few sips, I didn’t think the coffee tasted too strong despite selecting the specific button. This wasn't an issue because I don’t usually like my coffee strong, but if that’s important to you, you’ll want to try it for yourself to see if it meets your standards. It had just the right amount of flavor and strength for my liking, especially after adding some cream and sugar. 

Test 2: making an iced coffee

Keurig advertises the machine as having an iced coffee setting. From what I can tell, it didn’t have one — unless they meant you could brew the coffee over ice which is how I made my cup. I followed the same process for the hot coffee, but this time filled my mug up with ice before brewing. 

Compared to the previous cup, I preferred the iced coffee because it was more refreshing, IMO. Oddly enough, I didn’t feel like I needed the cream and sugar I typically put into my hot beverage. 

After making two cups, the reservoir was approximately a quarter of the way empty, so it still had some days left before I had to refill it.  Just so you know, a blue light appears on the machine when it’s time to top it up, which is helpful.

Key features the Keurig K-Elite offers

Temperature Control: This feature allows you to adjust the temperature of the coffee being brewed. Whether you like your beverage piping hot or warm, you can adjust the settings to set the temperature anywhere between 187 degrees Fahrenheit to 192 degrees Fahrenheit.

Auto-On/Off: Sometimes it’s easy to forget whether you’ve unplugged your coffee machine with everything going on in the morning. The K-Elite has an automatic shut-off and will turn off two hours after the last brew. You can also program it to turn off in 15-minute increments after the last brew or remain on all the time. A moon icon will appear when "auto-off" is turned on. 

If you want the coffee maker to automatically turn on at a specific time, you can also set that as well. This is indicated by a sun icon. 

High Altitude: Whether you live in the mountains or at a high altitude, that can have an effect on how your coffee brews. This machine has a setting specifically for high altitudes to make sure it works properly. You’ll know it’s on if a mountain icon appears. 

Quiet-Brew Technology: Some coffee machines tend to make a loud noise as they brew, but not this one thanks to its Quiet-Brew technology which reduces the amount of noise.  

How to clean and maintain this Keurig coffee maker 

To prevent unwanted calcium buildup and dried-up coffee grounds, it’s important that you clean your coffee machine every few weeks. The brand recommends hand washing the reservoir and letting it air dry once it’s unplugged and cooled down. To clean the needle, my hack is to put a paper clip in to release any remaining coffee grounds. Then you’ll want to run two hot water cycles.

I think the Keurig K-Elite single-serve coffee maker is a great option for those who are simple coffee people. With its single-use function, you can make yourself a cup of iced or hot coffee in minutes. It’s small enough to fit on those tiny countertops and if you aren’t a technology aficionado like myself, then you’ll probably appreciate its intuitive design and lighting effects.

While this coffee machine is on sale right now for $129.99, it normally retails for $189.99. I think it’s a bit overpriced considering the lack of functions, however, it’s a solid gadget that works efficiently and well for your morning cup of joe.  

How does the Keurig K-Elite rate online?

The Keurig K-Elite single-serve coffee maker was initially sold through Keurig and has a rating of 4.3 out of five stars with reviewers saying it’s “easy to use,” “very attractive,” and “tastes superb.” 

A few four-star reviewers and lower expressed frustration about the size of the largest size coffee saying 12 ounces isn’t big enough for many thermal to-go cups. Also, some say that the pump is louder than other models they’ve tried.

I’ve tried my fair share of Keurig coffee machines, but never one that combines a single serve and carafe option in the same unit ⁠— until I was introduced to the Keurig K-Duo Single Serve & Carafe Coffee Maker, that is.

This coffee maker is great for anyone who is normally always on the go and wants a quick cup of joe at the click of a button — hello, commuter life. And, as someone who isn't tech-savvy (especially in the AM), this coffee maker satisfies all of those needs and then some. Its intuitive 11-button design takes away the hassle commonly found in more expensive models for a quick and seamless experience. 

I spent a few weeks familiarizing myself with this 2-in-1 coffee maker to see how it fares against other single-serve coffee makers and drip coffee makers on the market. Here's my honest verdict, and everything you need to know before you buy yours.

TLDR: What I thought of the Keurig K-Duo 

Keurig’s K-Duo Single Serve & Carafe Coffee Maker combines coffee pods with a classic carafe to make a fresh cup of coffee at the click of a button. It’s simple to fill up the water tank and select how you’d like to brew your coffee and the size you’re looking for. A quick glance over the instruction manual, and you're ready to go. In saying this, it is worth noting that this is one of Keurig's more basic offerings, However, it does exactly what’s advertised.

The auto-brew was slightly more difficult to figure out and semi-delayed when brewing, but not enough for me to say it wasn’t a standout feature. It's now become part of my morning schedule, and I feel like I've "won" a cup of coffee as a reward for getting ready.

Unboxing the Keurig K-Duo

One of the reasons I love Keurig machines is that they are easy to set up. All of the parts come individually wrapped and are pretty much ready to go. I simply had to unwrap them, lift the carafe, machine and filter out of the box, and assemble. It also came with a spoon to measure your ground coffee.

The "unofficial official" first step in the plastic-wrapped (sigh) user manual was to plug in the machine, power it on, and set the time. There was a power-on button with the traditional logo followed by an LCD digital clock screen with the hour and minute which I set by clicking two tiny buttons labeled "H" and "M." Once the time was set, I clicked the “brew” button to confirm my action. 

Keurig provided step-by-step directions on how to do a cleansing brew for both the single cup and the carafe. This involved running 8 ounces of hot water through each part before dumping it out. I filled the 60-ounce reservoir to the MAX fill line and brewed both a single cup into a mug and through the carafe. The initial heating process took about four minutes and after that, it was ready to go.

When using this coffee maker, I liked how there was an indicator light to confirm that the brew was complete. The carafe button even turns red to signal that the heating plate is on so that you can keep your beverage warm instead of diluting it with hot water from your kettle.

Test 1: making coffee using the drip filter and carafe

First, I started by brewing a regular cup of coffee using the carafe. I refilled the reservoir to the maximum fill line and placed it in the rear of the machine. Then, I lifted the filter basket cover up to place a paper filter. The brand recommended one tablespoon of ground coffee per cup. I closed over the cover for the filter basket and placed the carafe on the heating plate. 

With the click of four buttons, it was ready to go. I pressed the power button, followed by selecting the carafe button, then the brew button. The process took all of five minutes, not even to get the coffee brewed and into my mug. 

The best part? The heating plate stays on for two hours after brewing so you can have hot coffee for longer. And, it’s not super loud either. It does make a squeaking noise when heating up for both settings, but nothing that’ll wake up your household.

Test 2: making single-serve coffee

To test the single-cup setting, I used a Joffrey cup I bought at Disney World. For this, I placed my mug on the tray, placed a capsule in, and pressed the necessary buttons.

It’s pretty much the same buttons as the carafe, except you select the pod icon instead. You do need to apply some pressure to puncture the pod when you shut it so don’t be alarmed if you need to use a bit of force. I did this twice, once using the standard setting and then again, selecting the "strong" button before brewing. The stronger setting provided a more intensively-flavored brew, (which isn’t usually my vibe), but I wanted to try it out for the sake of this review.

You’ll need to refill the reservoir every so often (roughly every two days or so), depending on how much coffee you drink. And since there is no water filter, you’ll want to keep in mind that it may have an impact on the longevity of the coffee machine. This could be an element you’ll want to look into and perhaps invest in a coffee machine with a water filter like the Keurig K-Cafe Smart. For more complex drinks, you’ll want to consider alternative Keurig machines that have additional features like a milk frother, an iced setting, multi-stream technology, etc.  

Key features the Keurig K-Duo offers

Smart Start: Keurig’s "Smart Start" allows for heating and brewing without the wait. After turning on the machine and adding in the brew type, you simply select the size and press the brew button. I thought this was a great feature to speed up the process in the morning. Taste-wise, the coffee was how I expected it to be, bittersweet with a strong aroma. It wasn’t watered down or too strong — exactly how I like it. 

Auto-Off: We’ve all been there — myself included — forgetting to switch off the machine and unplug it. Thankfully, this coffee maker has an automatic shut-off for the brewer five minutes after your last brew and turns off the hot plate two hours after. 

Strong Brew: This feature increases the strength and intensity of the beverage. Simply click the button before hitting brew and voila, it's like ordering a double shot at the store.

High Altitude: If you live in an area at a high altitude (above 5,000 feet), you’ll want to make sure your coffee maker works properly. Simply press the mountain icon that’ll pop up after holding down the pod and carafe buttons for three seconds. 

Pause and Pour: If you like your coffee piping hot, this feature ups the water temperature mid-brew without having to wait. 

Brew and Pause: The same idea applies when using the carafe. Simply press the carafe button to pause and resume the brew afterward. I found the ground coffee tasted a little diluted in comparison to the single-use cup. However, after adding milk and sugar, they tasted nearly identical.

How to clean and maintain this Keurig coffee maker 

After spending $100+ on a small coffee maker, you’ll want to keep it in pristine condition. To clean this coffee machine, Keurig recommends hand washing it when it’s unplugged and cooled down. And, when it comes to disposing of your spent products, Keurig’s K Cups are recyclable when you remove the lid and the used coffee grounds (which can be composted).

How does it compare to other Keurig machines? 

In comparison to the K-Supreme Single Serve Coffee maker, both offer 6, 8, 10, and 12-ounce cups of coffee and don’t have the ability to make espressos or lattes. The Keurig K-Duo Single Serve & Carafe Coffee doesn’t have an iced setting unlike the K-Supreme, however, this one has strength control whereas the other doesn’t.

Is the Keurig K-Duo right for you? 

If you don’t need a fancy latte every morning then this machine will do the trick. With its single-use and slow-drip options, you can make yourself a 12-ounce cup of coffee or insert a pod for a consistent, individually-sized beverage. It’s small enough to slot into tiny kitchens and if you aren’t techy, you’ll appreciate its intuitive design and easy-to-follow manual.

What is the best way to store coffee pods?

One rule to always follow is to read the instructions on the back of the box your coffee pods come in. These instructions will tell you how to store your pods and let you know if there's a specific way to stack them. Otherwise, it's pretty much down to convenience as some people can dedicate more countertop space to pod coffee storage than others. If it makes more sense to keep your pods in a cabinet, then do it!

Whatever you do, though, keep them close by to your machine and within easy reach.

"While coffee corner decor is a matter of personal expression, there are certain things to remember to keep your Keurig coffee fresh," says Lindsay Fermano, senior director of brand marketing at Keurig Dr Pepper Inc.

"Most importantly, we suggest storing your K-Cup pods in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight. It might seem intuitive to keep them in the fridge or freezer for freshness, but we would recommend against it. The best personal blender

The NutriBullet Pro 900 is the brand's most powerful bullet blender, and it really did the trick when I used it to make smoothies. From frozen fruit to tough kale stems, even the most lump-prone ingredients won't make it past this gadget.

The design is simple and easy to use. Press the blending cup down onto the base after screwing on the blending lid and twist. I left it to blend until I was happy with the consistency and then twisted it back to the neutral position (where the motor should stop).

Seeds, berries, and a tough pineapple core were traceless with this top-choice blender after churning for one minute. My finished smoothie was very creamy with no fiber residue. Cleaning-wise, the blending cup can go in the dishwasher, but the blade can't.

The best portable blender

It might seem a little counterintuitive to include two small blenders in this guide, but they serve two different purposes. While the Nutribullet can grind spices, make pestos, hummus, and thicker sauces — this two-button on-the-go appliance can help you to shake up your smoothie/juice bar-spending habits. 

It's lightweight, looks good, and can be charged using a USB-C power cable (N.B: The first charge takes two hours). And, before you think it's just for healthy virtuous people, our review said that it could (hypothetically speaking: wink wink) be used to make frozen margaritas to enjoy with your picnic in the park.

Functionality-wise, the flip-top lid means that you can sip with ease, and in between guzzling, you can hold it with the hinged carry handle. As with more and more food-grade products these days, it's made with a ribbed BPA-free plastic vessel, so you don't need to worry about toxic chemicals leeching into your drink.

On the whole, it's easy to clean. You can drop a little dish soap and warm water into it and whizz away, but be sure not to submerge the motor in water if you are handwashing it. The fact you can't remove this part is one of the reasons why our reviewer didn't give it five stars.

If being able to speak lots of languages means you're multilingual, then this machine is multibeangual.  Yup, totally made that word up, but hopefully, you get what I mean. The ability to switch between roasted cherries, pre-blitzed beans, or capsules is a game-changer and means that you can chop and change your coffee whenever you want. So much choice!

Naturally, grinding coffee is a noisy job, but it's expected with this appliance. And, if you use the eco-friendly reusable cup, it is a little hot (but so are disposable filter papers). Lastly, there isn't a warming plate, but the coffee dispensed is hot and delicious, so I can't imagine you'll need this feature, anyway. Personally, I just pre-fill my cup with boiling water from my faucet or kettle.

We haven't tried the petite version of the popular Smeg kettle just yet, but we do love the normal-size version — and the only difference between them is their capacity. With a smaller design comes a lighter weight (just 2.2 pounds!), and it boils your water even faster. Winning!

I personally love the look of the Smeg kettle, but it might on the spendier side depending on budget. If a huge tea kettle isn't a necessity (for example, if you live alone or with one roommate or partner) this will totally cater to your needs. It costs less than the original, and it only boils three cups of water at a time. This means less electricity usage and less water wastage in a two-person household. My colleague Annie has had hers for years and she raves about it. In fact, she's so set on the fact that Smeg appliances are amazing, she invested in the toaster, blender, hand blender, and even the fridge to match.

Personally, I'll happily survive with a good coffee maker that just makes espresso. But many of my friends prefer to sip java topped up with a splash (or generous glug) of milk. So rather than pouring cold milk straight from the fridge, I like to give guests a coffee shop-style experience with fluffy clouds of warm milk.

Out of all of the pod machines out there, this is one serious bit of machinery. There is a huge menu of compatible pods and the founders really care about the most subtle nuances in coffee profiles. This isn't your cookie-cutter machine. While testing, I could spend hours making tweaks to the water temperature and playing with the Bloom & Brew feature to optimize the extraction of my coffee. And let's not look over how incredibly chic that OLED screen looks.

Best Mr. Coffee small coffee maker

The white colorway and touch LED control panel will elevate your kitchen instantly (especially if you like whites and neutral shades in your cook space). But the fact that you don't have to have a separate automatic milk frother or know how to froth milk is a lifesaver (especially when a picky coffee drinker comes around). 

Note that the milk compartment is a little tricky to clean at first, but like with everything — practice makes perfect! The Easy Clean feature actually uses steam to clean the reservoir if you don't manage to get every last drop out. 

At just under $350 — it's spendy. But I've done the math, and it's basically the same as 69 Venti lattes from Starbucks. So, essentially you could have your own machine for going cold turkey on Starbs for around two months. Oh and don't forget, come fall/winter time, this machine also transforms into a hot cocoa maker.

Best coffee maker for your office

Sick and tired of plastic pod coffee makers (that no doubt come with pods that are questionably hard to recycle)? Then you need this metal model from Grind. In London, Grind bars make a mean Espresso Martini which is based on their own coffee blend which you can buy direct, from Selfridges, or via Amazon. If you do decide to recreate happy hour at home, just know that their caps are compostable.

While we found the functionality rather basic, if you're looking to buy a simple machine that uses organic, ethically sourced coffee that's delivered with a carbon-positive footprint, this machine ticks all the boxes.

You'll definitely want to get your hands on a few microfiber towels and perhaps an antibacterial cleaning spray as this metal machine does mark easily. If you like milk-based drinks, this machine is probably not for you. That is unless you are OK with pouring cold milk into your drink or investing in a milk frother alongside your small coffee maker. I could see this one being used in your home office. As far as Nespresso coffee makers go, it's a money-saving machine that's simple to use, looks amazing on your counter, and produces delicious coffee.

Capable of brewing coffee and espresso beverages, this small coffee maker provides the best of both worlds when it comes to making long and short drinks with differing strengths. But what makes this machine so special is that each Vertuo capsule has a barcode that is quickly read. The coffee maker then does its magic in bringing you the best cup of Joe based on the strength and length desired.

The Ninja Programmable XL 14-Cup Coffee Maker PRO has a small footprint on the kitchen counter and an intuitive design. From the integrated coffee scoop (you won’t have to worry about misplacing it!) to the 14-cup carafe, which has a lid that screws on for no leaks and removes completely for easy cleaning, every detail of this simple coffee maker has been thought through carefully. 

In review, its biggest draw is that it brewed piping hot coffee and retained heat for up to four hours. Best travel coffee maker

If you are particularly picky about your coffee but you’re struggling to find a large enough space in your kitchen for a full-sized coffee machine, this clever little portable espresso maker can be tucked neatly in a drawer until you’re ready to use it.

Weighing just 0.7 lbs, simply fill the base up with 2 oz of hot water, use the scoop to pop your favorite blend of ground coffee in its container, put it together, and pump until the pressure (8 bars of it!) starts pushing the water through the coffee — et voila, a creamy, luxurious espresso.

If you’re camping, you could heat this on the stove, but otherwise, in many situations, you will need to bring a vessel of hot water with you. Buying so you can make a decent coffee at work or in hotel rooms? This won’t be an issue as you can fill it up with a good tea kettle.  

Before you commit to this purchase, be sure you like the Nespresso OriginalLine capsules (or at least coffee caps that are the same shape) as Vertuo pods are not compatible with this device. If you spend a lot of time outside of the house and rely on this as your main source of caffeine, consider investing in the Minipresso tank+ (a water tank to make longer drinks) and the Minipresso case (especially if it gets thrown about in your work or schoolbag).

What type of small coffee maker do you need?

Before adding to your basket, it's a good idea to manage your expectations on the small coffee maker you'll be buying and using for months (or even years) to come. If you're stuck on choosing a type of coffee maker, let us help.

• Pod coffee makers are great for super quick cups of coffee and overall there are some great easy-to-use models on the market. There's no mess involved in grinding your own beans or decanting spend grounds into your compost bin, but the cost of capsules might tot up over time and true coffee aficionados say capped coffee is stale and doesn't produce the best end product. The jury's out!
• Single-serve coffee makers, generally speaking, give you the option to use pods or ground coffee. The settings on these are calibrated to offer a suitable-brewed individual cup, making espresso and Americano drinks (depending on how much water is dispensed, and how sophisticated the settings are). Premium coffee machines may come with a built-in milk frother, though these will typically be at the higher end of your budget.

How we reviewed these small coffee makers

Here at Real Homes, if we're not already sipping on a cup of coffee then you can bet we're messaging our colleagues to see when they're getting their fill of freshly brewed coffee. We've got a professional bean-to-cup machine in the office and several coffee shops to choose from around our London Paddington office.

However, when we're WFH, we need a machine for modest spaces. And so, often when we're testing these coffee makers, we won't just get the tape measure out. Nope, we'll take these appliances home to see if they can fit on the tiniest of countertops with shelves, cupboards, and alcoves added to the mix. 

When we're testing multiple machines side by side, we prefer to travel to our test kitchen in Reading, UK. We measure how noisy the machines are, analyze their brew times, and discover what coffee types are available. Because you don't want to be stuck with a loud device that makes a terrible drink, right? Here's what else we consider while reviewing coffee machines:

Size
Does the machine have a long cable to stretch to the few plug sockets we have? This is something we need to know. Can it sit flush or does it have to be displayed at an angle? Another query we think about while quaffing coffee.

Ease of cleaning
Let's not pretend that we like cleaning, so if the components can fit in our tiny dishwashers, then the small coffee maker will definitely earn some brownie points. However, if it's handwash only, we'll evaluate how easy it is to take apart and reassemble once clean.

Descaling process
Cleaning the plastic and stainless steel components is not the only maintenance needed for a small coffee maker. You'll also need to descale it every couple of months. So the team will run a cycle, keeping an eye on how lengthy it is, and how thoroughly the agent can get to work. This is where we like to keep hold of machines to really push the limits on whether they can tolerate hard water (especially in our city dwellings).

Coffee taste
People like different beverages, so we try and strip out subjectivity by commenting on coffee as part of a tasting panel. If you can't decide whether you love an iced latte more or a piping hot Americano, you need a machine that can do both. I've tried a number of Keurig coffee makers, and the Keurig K-Café Smart is by far the most sophisticated of the bunch. From its smart features to its coffee house focus, the gadget makes brewing lattes and other specialty beverages easy.

The Keurig K-Café Smart is an extension of the Keurig K-Café. Coupled with a dramatic redesign, the Smart version is loaded with new features like Keurig’s BrewID technology (which detects the K-Cup pod in the brewer), automatic customization of the brew settings for an optimized drinking experience, and recipe recommendations within the app. It also has an upgraded built-in milk frother with three speeds and a cold froth setting. Keurig’s MultiStream Technology is also packaged in the machine for more thoroughly saturated coffee grounds, which is all customizable and controllable through the app. 

I've spent the last few weeks familiarizing myself with this all-in-one machine in my own kitchen to see how it fares against other coffee makers we've tested at Real Homes. 

TLDR: What we thought of the Keurig K-Café Smart

With both a tech-forward and a creative element to it, it's clear that the Keurig K-Café Smart is not your ordinary single-serve brewer.

This machine showcases the very best of Keurig's brewing technology, which I especially noticed thanks to its MultiStream brewing technology and BrewID system. I loved that its Wi-Fi-enabled features let you customize brewing and discover new recipes, as well as easily order more of your favorite pods. If you plan to transform your K-cup routine into a coffee house experience and you love a latte, you will definitely enjoy how easy it is to use.

Now, it does have some growing pains. Because the milk froths separately to the brewer, I wouldn't call it a time-saving experience, but it does open up a ton of opportunities to get really creative with recipes, allowing you to unleash your inner barista. I also think it will come down to personal preference as to if you prefer the dedicated milk frother spot at the front of the machine or if it was available separately. I found that when I used an oversized mug, the coffee station felt a little squished.

Unboxing 

Keurigs are notoriously simple to set up. I simply needed to lift it out of the box and place the water tank and milk frother into their designated spots.

It also comes with a water filter that you can place after you submerge the filter capsule for five minutes in water. After submerging, rinse it, then snap it onto the base of the water container. The filter should be replaced every two months or 60 tank refills.

While I was waiting for the water filter to position, I went to set up the app. It took just a few moments to create an account and pair the coffee maker, which it did by scanning the QR code located at the back of the machine. 

Once the machine was plugged in and ready to go, I simply placed a large mug under to flush the machine with 10 oz of hot water. After that, you're ready to brew.

Using the Keurig K-Café Smart

For brewing a cup, I simply place the K-Cup into its position. The BrewID takes moments to identify what K-Cup you have, in which you can decide to use their automatic setting or adjust the temperature and brew strength features by pressing the Strength and Temp buttons to your desired level.

 You can also select the shot button, or the over-ice setting and no other selections are required. The LCD screen sort of spells out your choices, as well as directs you to the app to follow recipes. To start brewing, you'll touch the large center K. The small digital display provides updates on brewing and what the machine is doing. If you choose to froth milk alongside, you'll do that first, and then the coffee will brew directly after.

Key features of the Keurig K-Café Smart

Multi-Stream technology
Keurig's Multi-Stream technology changed my perspective on the coffee quality from Keurig machines, and I only want my Keurig's going forward to have this feature. Rather than the single puncture in a K-cup for water to filter through, five entrance needles create multiple streams of water to saturate the grounds in a rainfall effect inside the pod more evenly for extra flavor and aroma extraction. 

Brew ID
Each time you open the device, you may notice a small light that reads the inserted pod. BrewID detects the K-Cup pod in the brewer, which grants access to the Keurig Signature Brew and automatically customizes the brew settings to the recommendations of the coffee roasting expert who created it. In order for this setting to work, it must be an official Keurig-approved K-cup. For instance, I tried to use a K-cup I had lying around from a recent hotel stay and it did not recognize it, but I could still brew it. The Brew ID also unlocks tailored coffeehouse drink recipe recommendations on the Keurig app.

The Keurig app
I found the Keurig app really useful, and I thought it had some good features, but it's not necessary for daily use. It's divided into a few sections: an area where you can shop K-cups and Keurig accessories directly, a place to track your order history, and
a section to manage your Keurig account. On the home page, you'll see a number of recipes categorized by coffee type and even recommendations based on your brews. The idea of the craft recipes was novel at first, especially with the step-by-step directions, but it does require some pre-planning such as having the suggested K-cups, syrups, and other ingredients on hand.  

You can also control the brewer from afar, but note you can only brew or schedule a cup of coffee if a K-cup is already inserted into the machine, and don't forget to have a cup underneath it, which I almost forgot about when I was playing around with starting a brew from across the kitchen.  Fortunately, it only lets you tinker with cup size, temperature (Warm to Max Hot), and strength settings (balanced to intense) when a pod is detected, and it knows. 

You can also schedule it to make a brew with the app for coffee right when you get to the kitchen or your office and create a routine schedule if you're organized to prep a coffee pod (and mug) in advance. 

Milk frother
The upgraded built-in milk frother features three speeds and a cold froth setting. It has its own dedicated spot at the front of the machine, which is useful for those who like to keep everything together but lost points with me for the frother not being able to operate at the same time as the coffee brewed, but before it and then the coffee brew cycle started. It won back points for the tremendous amount of froth it was able to produce and the inclusion of a handle and subtle spout — though I still needed to pull out a spoon to scoop out the froth. 

Cup customizations
From cup size to brew strength to temperature adjustments, you have more control over the parameters of your coffee. Choose from 6-ounce, 8-ounce, 10-ounce, and 12-ounce sizes, and for lattes, you can brew a concentrated single or double shot, as well as the 6-ounce over-ice setting. I found that a 12-ounce coffee on the same medium strength setting as the  6-ounce tasted significantly weaker and was most happy with the 8-ounce selection. Don't forget about the other five tiers of customizations for temperature and strength either. You can control cup size and strength on the machine or the app, too. 

Over-ice feature
The over-ice feature will brew 6 ounces at a lower temperature optimized for iced beverages, but it is still a hot brewing cycle, so not truly an iced coffee. Adding ice beforehand and topping it off with additional ice before drinking is the way to go. This kind of drink is also well-complemented by a heaping scoop of cold milk froth. The lower temperature setting helps the ice not melt so quickly for a perfectly concentrated cold cup.

Large water tank
Though not the largest water tank Keurig offers, the 60-ounce container lasts several brews, and the machine lets you know when the water level is low and when it's time to refill. It sits slightly detached from the machine and flows from the reservoir through the undercarriage of the machine. It easily lifts up and off from its port, with a handle to make carrying easier. The water tank is also built to support Keurig's water filters.

How to clean and maintain the Keurig K-Café Smart

The beauty of the Keurig is it's pretty fuss-free and requires minimal cleanup to remove the pod in between brews. If you want to be particularly sustainable, the K-cups are recyclable when you remove the lid and the used coffee grounds, which can be composted. The included water filter should be replaced every two months or 60 tank refills. Additionally, when it comes time to descale, after 250 uses, the machine will notify you, and Keurig also offers its own descaling solution.

The included milk frother jug can be cleaned with soapy water, but keep liquid contact only within the interior as it can not be submerged in water due to its electrical components.

How does the Keurig K-Café Smart rate online?

The Keurig K-Café Smart was initially sold directly through Keurig and has a rating of 4.7 out of five stars with enthusiastic reviewers commenting how it's the best coffee maker they've ever used and so easy, from brewing to cleaning. 

A few four-star ratings and lower expressed frustration with Keurig's smart delivery application while another person wished it would fit a travel-size mug. The most critical comments came from the wait time of the BrewID identifying the pod and issues connecting with the app.

What's it like in comparison to other Keurig machines? 

The Keurig K-Café SMART is Keurig's most specialized machine, as only a few models have the SMART edition, like the K-Supreme SMART. This one is perfect for those who want to make lattes and other milky beverages. Comparatively, if you were to purchase Keurig's Hot and Cold milk frother separately, it will cost you an additional $90, and the other machines do not have a concentrated shot option.

I've previously reviewed the K-Supreme Plus, which has been my favorite Keurig to date as it also offers temperature and strength control, over ice, an additional 4-ounce cup size, programmable favorites, and an LCD digital display.

The Keurig K-Café SMART is an upgrade to the original K-Café Single Serve Coffee Latte & Cappuccino Maker in almost every way, from its sleek, streamlined, and more compact appearance to its customizable features. Of course, there is quite a price difference, $250 vs. $190. The original does not offer temperature control or iced coffee, but it does have a stronger brew option. On the contrary, the milk frother cup is dishwasher safe with a stainless steel design that has its own pocket on the machine to froth.

 Keurig K-Café Smart vs. Nespresso Vertuo

In the debate of Keurig vs. Nespresso, the Keurig K-Café SMART truly narrows any gap. During my time with the Keurig K-Café SMART, I couldn't help but immediately draw some similarities between the Keurig K-Café SMART and the best Nespresso machines. The most direct comparison for me is the Vertuo Next model, which can be purchased with just the appliance or bundled with a free-standing Aeroccino milk frother. 

The Nespresso Vertuo is inherently smart for its barcode system that identifies what flavor is being added, and it's clear the BrewID from Keurig is a reference to that. The beauty of the K-Café SMART is truly how customizable it is, and you're able to use any K-cup. You can brew your coffee so many different ways, while on the Nespresso Vertuo, the pod you choose is already pre-determined as to how it will brew and the quantity.

The Nespresso does offer true espresso, while the Keurig's shot setting doesn't offer the same velvety consistency but rather a more concentrated coffee. 

As the Aeroccino milk frother is detached, it operates separately from the Vertuo machines and can work simultaneously as you brew your espresso, which was an advantage for me. The attached design of the Keurig to the separate device of the Nespresso really comes down to personal taste. In performance, the Keurig milk frother and the Nespresso frother were nearly identical with their non-stick interiors, different settings, and cold froth features, however, the Nespresso does not have the handle or the subtle spout that the Keurig does. 

Price-wise, the Nespresso Vertuo Plus with an Aeroccino milk frother is about $230, depending on which model you go with. This is comparable to Keurig's $250 ask. That being said, Keurig does tend to offer deeper and more frequent discounts than Nespresso, especially when you purchase directly through Keurig. 

Is the Keurig K-Café Smart right for you?

If you're looking for a single-serve coffee maker that can do it all, absolutely. It's definitely on the pricier side, but it's never been easier to make single-cup coffee, a latte, iced coffee, or whatever caffeinated drink your heart desires. The Multi-Stream technology makes all the difference in the flavor and quality of the brew, while BrewID adds a further techy component that provides even more perfection to your cup.

You should buy the K-Café Smart if you plan to make good use of the frother, otherwise, you'll get on fine with Keurig's other brewers if you're looking for something more compact. However, once you try any of the SMART brewers, it's hard to go back to your traditional Keurig. Consider me spoiled.

As a single-serve coffee maker, it is incredibly simple to use and arguably more convenient than some of the other picks on our list. And it doesn't skimp on taste for the sake of ease either. By brewing over ice, it retains flavor, so it's going to be some of the best iced coffee you can get, without the hassle. Our reviewer Jaclyn claims that it brews coffee at a hotter temperature to extract the full flavor before gradually cooling down, meaning less ice melt and a vibrant flavor that's not watered down. She also liked that you can use Keurig's flavored coffees using the brew-over-ice function for an easy iced drink that rivals the taste of one from your fave coffee house.

Good to know
Although the pod coffee machine can make hot coffees up to 12 ounces in size, the iced function only does a 6-ounce measure, which is a downside in our eyes. The best cold coffee maker

If you're after ready-to-go cold coffee and love the idea of being able to pour yourself a cup straight from the fridge, then you'll love KitchenAid's Cold Brew Coffee Maker. It sits directly on your fridge shelf and has a convenient pour dispenser built into the design. It has a fairly simple brew process but does require using your own measuring cups to fill. 

Features we loved
This machine dispenses coffee easily. The spout is secure and doesn’t cause any drips. The entire experience with this product offers the luxury feeling of having cold brew “on tap.” The resulting coffee concentrate has a powerful kick but if you want even more coffee, an extra-large 38-ounce version of this product is available, too.

Good to know
The dispenser design is very easy to handle and its short height makes it easy to fit onto any shelf in the fridge. Our reviewer Jaclyn placed it on the lower shelf and used higher shelves for other groceries. This did make using the handle a little awkward, and she needed two hands to remove it. The handle does feel secure when carrying the brewer from a countertop to the refrigerator, and all aspects of the brewer design feel sturdy. Although the large metal brew basket holds a lot of coffee, a significant amount of liquid is absorbed into the coffee grounds, leaving the final vessel half-full after pulling out the brew basket.

To brew, it requires adding 9 ounces or 250 grams of coarse ground coffee with 1 liter and 8 ounces to the container and then steeping in the refrigerator or at room temperature. Once it is complete, you remove the brew basket with the interior handle and the result is approximately 28 ounces of cold brew or 14 two-ounce coffee concentrate servings. To use the concentrate, you can mix one part coffee with two parts milk or water to serve.

The best iced coffee maker on Amazon

The Ovalware RJ3 Cold Brew Maker makes strong coffee with bold flavors, although this could be due to its cold brewing process, which is slower and takes place over several hours in the fridge. Our reviewer Alyssa was able to use the Ovalware Cold Brew Maker while hosting a Sunday brunch with friends. She served six guests with plenty left over for the rest of the week which was ideal and kept her from having to make six individual servings.

Features we loved
The pitcher-like shape of the design and removable filter is perfect for serving friends. Grabbing this straight from the fridge also meant that it was perfectly chilled and mimicked an iced coffee (and pouring it over ice and diluting the flavor wasn't necessary). This was ultimately impressive and a crowd-pleaser.

Good to know
The brewing process is easy to do, especially if you're someone who's familiar with using a French press. However, if you can plan ahead and let the vessel steep overnight, the result is delightful. Because of its 1-liter capacity and stronger brew result, you can serve more than you would from an average French press.

Featuring a BPA-free, temperature-resistant glass carafe, fitted with a removable ultra-fine mesh reusable filter, this cold brew coffee maker is wonderfully simple to use. All you need to do is add ground coffee to the filter, clip it into the jug, top up with cold water, and leave it to brew in the fridge. It’s that easy. 

Features we love
Our reviewer and staff writer Beth Mahoney loved the fact that by slowly cold brewing ground coffee, the end result is a chilled brew with a lot of flavor and — regardless of the coffee grounds you use — some subtly sweet and refreshing undertones. This means that it can be drunk black, without the need for added sugar or milk. She also loves the jug’s leakproof lid and easy-clean design. Oh, and in addition to being used to make cold brewed coffee, this jug can also be used to brew iced tea. 

Good to know
The only downside is the fact that it takes eight to 12 hours to brew. Still, once it's made you can store the cold brew in the fridge for up to five days in an airtight container, so if you refill it daily, you’ll always have plenty of ready-to-go chilled coffee. Patience is a virtue, so if you're happy to wait — you'll be saving money on ready-made, shop-bought serves as our staff writer did. She says: "After I found that I was spending far too much money on store-bought bottles of cold brew and Starbucks chilled coffee drinks, I opted to invest in the Gator Coffee Cold Brew Maker so that I could make her own cold brewed coffee for a fraction of the price."

I admittedly have a soft spot for filter coffee makers. I love the nostalgia associated with the sounds of water boiling in a machine and the consistent drip once it's ready. The Mr. Coffee Iced Coffee Maker offers the simple luxury of freshly-brewed, filter drip coffee in just a few minutes with a portable tumbler to take the single serving to pour away with you. The instruction manual outlines that you can use your own drinking mug or cup, but a 22-ounce one also comes included in the box and fits perfectly into the depression beneath the spout. Plus, it keeps your iced coffee cold for longer.

Features we loved
First thing first, know that this machine makes hot coffee, so you can use it for hot and cold drinks. The gap between the dispenser element of the machine and your countertop is large enough for you to use an iced coffee tumbler (like the one that comes included) so you don't need to get an extra mug dirty. Our reviewer Alyssa said that the reusable nylon coffee filter was a delightful surprise as she doesn't usually keep paper filters in the house and didn’t have one on hand. It's also more environmentally friendly. However, compared to the other iced coffee makers we tested, this product produced a less bold coffee flavor and was more of a true medium roast rather than a bold dark roast. One of our favorite features of this machine is how slimline it is — it takes up barely any countertop space.

Good to know

When searching for the right iced coffee maker for you, it is important to consider the machine’s volume and your lifestyle. Think about:

1. How much coffee can it make at once?
If you enjoy entertaining and like the idea of having the ability to offer your guests an iced coffee, a larger vessel that can easily serve many people may be ideal for you. You should also consider any other coffee products you already own, such as a standard filter brew coffee maker or French press that could do the job just as well. 

2. Does it serve a unique purpose?
The limited variety of products on the market specifically for making iced coffee means that one of the products you already own could produce a similar experience to iced coffee-making dedicated products. However, if you prefer your coffee iced and regularly order them from cafes, you can enjoy significant savings and time if you have one of these iced coffee makers ready to pour and enjoy straight from the fridge. 

3. Will you only use it seasonally?

It’s important to know how to descale a Keurig if you want your coffee maker to produce consistently delicious drinks. Limescale builds up inside the brewer and, over time, can result in coffee that isn’t as warm as it should be, affect the flavor of the brew, make the machine noisy, and reduce its lifespan.

Descaling even the best coffee maker regularly will stop limescale from becoming a problem and keep every cup tasting as good as it should, though, so it’s well worth sticking to the recommended schedule – or responding to the descale light if your model has one.

We’ve got the lowdown on how to clean a Keurig right here, along with the experts’ top tips on the task.

How to descale a Keurig according to experts 

Limescale is a chalky-looking deposit consisting mainly of calcium carbonate, and is left by hard water – that is water with high mineral content. Many of us live in hard water areas, and the results are there to see in our kettles as well as our coffee makers, and it affects large appliances such as washing machines and pipework, too.

Limescale isn’t bad for you, but it isn’t kind on your Keurig coffee maker, so to keep your coffee maker in perfect working order, here’s how to clean your coffee maker the right way.

1. Add descaling solution

The answer to the question of how to descale a Keurig is to begin with an empty water reservoir. The pod holder should also be empty.

You can use either Keurig’s Descaling Solution from Amazon in a bottle or its Descale Solution pouch. Distilled white vinegar is a descaling option that you’ll find widely recommended. However, you should be aware that this could invalidate the coffee maker’s warranty if your machine is still within that period. Other descaling products are available as further alternatives.

If you’re using Keurig descaler, follow the instructions and add either the solution or the contents of the pouch to the water reservoir plus water. If you’ve decided to go with vinegar or another descaler, these will also need to be diluted with water. 

‘Usually, the pre-made descaling agent needs to be mixed with one part descaling agent to 1 part water (1:1),’ says Wynand Barnard of Total Coffee Base. ‘Vinegar will require the same ratio.’

Place a large mug onto the coffee maker’s drip tray.

2. Begin the descaling process

The details of how to descale a Keurig vary by model. ‘The newest K-Supreme and K-Supreme Plus models, as well as the K-Slim, have an actual descale mode,’ explains Michael Conti. ‘Once you’ve added your cleaning solution to the water tank, just press and hold the 8 and 12 oz button for 3 seconds to enter descale mode. The brew button will start flashing. Press it to start descaling.’ 

Repeat the latter step until add water is illuminated, then rinse the reservoir, fill with fresh water and press the brew button to rinse. Repeat the rinsing process until descale is no longer illuminated or until add water is illuminated in the case of the K-Slim.

Other models don’t have this feature. ‘You just fill the tank with your solution, make sure there is no pod in the holder, and then press the largest brew size button your model has,’ explains Michael. ‘Repeat until the add water light comes on. You’ll then need to repeat the process with only fresh water in the tank to rinse the machine.’ Note that for the K-Classic, K-Café, K-Latte, K-Elite, K-Compact, and K-Select, the brewer should rest for 30 minutes after add water comes on.

The K-Duo and K-Mini series models follow a different process, so check their instructions for descaling.

How often does a Keurig need descaling?

It’s important to know how to descale a Keurig as the interval recommended by the company for doing so is every three to six months. ‘Some machines have a descale indicator,’ says Chris Clark, founder of Brew Coffee At Home. ‘When the light is on, you should descale the machine.’

However, if your machine doesn’t have a light or you encounter issues before a coffee maker with a descale light indicates you should perform the process, you should descale it. 

Michael Conti lists the telltale signs. ‘The Keurig is not pumping water; the volume of coffee brewed is less than expected; water is leaking from the machine; your coffee starts to taste bad; it takes longer to brew a K-cup.’

How do I put my Keurig in descale mode?

Always check the manual to find out how to put your Keurig into descale mode, as it varies between models.

‘For example, if you are descaling a Keurig K-Slim or K-Supreme, you’ll need to press 8oz and 12 oz buttons simultaneously for 3 seconds when the machine is powered off,’ explains Chris Clark. ‘Then start the descaling process when the light is flashing.  

‘For K-Elite or K-Classic, you need to turn the machine off, add descaling solution and water with a 1:1 ratio. Then turn the machine on again, run a few brewing cycles with maximum brew size and hot water until the add water line is on. Then let the machine sit for 30 minutes. And finally, run at least 12 rinsing cycles with fresh water. 

‘Overall, not all the Keurigs use the same way to enter the descale mode.’

Can I use vinegar to descale a Keurig? 

Just as if you were learning how to descale a kettle, you can use vinegar to descale a Keurig, although you should always bear in mind that while your machine is in the warranty period this could invalidate it. 

Many people like the idea because of the cost-saving, but it’s not universally favored by coffee aficionados. ‘I always recommend using a commercial descaling solution vs a homemade solution with ingredients like vinegar,’ says Michael Conti. 

‘These commercial solutions are made with safe cleaning agents like citric acid that are more effective in removing coffee residue and oils. Plus, they are odorless so there won’t be any negative impact on the taste or aroma of your coffee. If you use vinegar, for example, you'll need to rinse the Keurig several times to get rid of that odor.’

How do I descale my Keurig without solution?

To descale a Keurig without solution, you could look to your own kitchen. ‘You can easily just use what you already have in your pantry: white distilled vinegar,’ says Ali Redmond, founder of Coffee Belly. ‘When you descale your machine fill up the water reservoir with half white distilled vinegar and half water.’

Always keep in mind the caution regarding the Keurig warranty which specifies use of the brand’s accessories if your machine is still within that period.

The best latte coffee maker

Neat, modern, and very sleek, the Nespresso Lattissima One is one of the most versatile Nespresso machines on the market. It has three drink size presets and a milk frothing attachment that works automatically.  While the operation is simple, the Nespresso Lattissima One makes a good selection of drinks. You can choose from espresso, lungo, and a third setting that exists for making milky drinks. To use this, add your pod and some milk to the frothing attachment before pressing the dedicated preset. 

It's rare to find a pod machine that has 19 bars of pressure, so the Nespresso Lattissima One is more capable than most single-serve coffee makers. It comes in a range of finishes and it is one of the most stylish coffee makers I've seen. This coffee machine has a built-in milk frother, and it's great. It only makes one serving size of milk though, with no variation in textures, so you'll have trouble if you like your cappuccinos but find a latte too milky. 

In September 2023, Nespresso brought out a Vertuo pod-compatible machine. Prior to this, older models only accepted OriginalLine capsules.

The best single serve coffee maker

This is the best coffee maker if you want a quality machine, the ability to make a vast range of coffees (from espressos to flat whites to iced coffees), and a price that is really reasonable. As I mentioned, the biggest selling point is that this coffee maker can do it all. It comes with a glass carafe for brewing a pot of drip coffee. Or, change the brew strength and make a single-serve espresso-style drink.

This is a fun setup that places your mug of choice nearly hovering in the center. It's very much giving quirky "coffee laboratory" vibes. It has a built-in milk frother and iced coffee setting. Before you start worrying about lacking the skills of a barista, it's an easy-to-use machine, in our opinion. It also doesn't take pods, which is nice because you can use whatever coffee you have on hand without having to place a special order.

While you can use the machine to make lattes and cappuccinos, I'd stop short of calling it an espresso maker. The product details call the espresso-style coffee "coffee concentrate," which could certainly be enjoyed on its own but is best used for creating coffee drinks. The whisk-style milk frother excellently froths milk into a fluffy consistency. However, you'll need to warm milk in the microwave, as it has no heated element unless you choose to froth with cold milk.

The best coffee maker with grinder

If you're looking for fresh coffee and lots of it, without spending a fortune on a fancy machine, then you'll want the Cuisinart Grind & Brew 12-Cup Automatic Coffee Maker. Why? It does it all — grinds fresh coffee beans and makes great coffee whether you want one cup or 12.

When it comes to coffee, our motto is "the fresher, the better," so I'm drawn to this machine's built-in grinder. That said, there's the option, as with most models of this type, to use pre-ground coffee, too. The 12-cup capacity is another obvious plus. On the downside. This model is large and a little heavy. But if you have the space, who can resist replicating your local coffee shop setup for a (relatively) cheap price? Beware that it may not slide under your kitchen cabinets. Measure twice prior to purchasing to see how much space you have for storage.

I also like that both the grind and brew features can be programmed, so you can have your fresh cup of coffee ready for you as soon as you open your eyes. Rise and grind, indeed. The coffee maker grinds the beans and then automatically uses them for your coffee, so you don't need to transfer the grounds. However, reviewers say the grinder needs to be cleaned out after each use for the best results.

The best dual coffee maker

You can (and I do) drink iced coffee all year round, no matter the weather. However, if counter space and budget are in short supply, you might want a bit more bang for your buck than a dedicated iced coffee maker, which is where this new model from Keurig comes in. 

Not only does it make delicious iced drinks, but it does what other members of the K-Slim family do and boils up tasty coffee in 8, 10, and 12-ounce cup sizes. As a single-serve coffee maker, it is incredibly simple to use and arguably more convenient than some of the other picks on our list. And it doesn't skimp on taste for the sake of ease either. It's by no means offensive, but at the moment, the only color available is gray. If you do want something that looks more upmarket, consider the K-Iced Single Serve Coffee Maker.

By brewing over ice, it retains flavor, so it's going to be some of the best iced coffee you can get, without the hassle. Our reviewer Jaclyn claims that it brews coffee at a hotter temperature to extract the full flavor before gradually cooling down, meaning less ice melt and a vibrant flavor that's not watery. She also liked that you can use Keurig's flavored coffees using the brew-over-ice function for an easy iced drink that rivals the taste of one from your fave coffee house.

It's worth knowing that although the pod coffee maker can make hot coffees up to 12 ounces in size, the iced function only does a 6-ounce measure, which is a downside in our eyes. That being said, it is so quick and easy to use, that thirsty folks could always double up for their desired size.

The best coffee and espresso maker

OK, this Barista Express is certainly a splurge, but one you'll be starting your day with for years to come. This machine has a lot going for it. It makes delish espresso and ristretto-style coffee, it has a built-in bean grinder, and it fancies up the countertop. It is, however, more expensive than our other picks. The machine starts by grinding the beans of your choice with its near-instantaneous, easy-to-clean grinder with four settings. Plus, it automatically delivers the perfect dose.

While most espresso makers have automatic or manual operations, Breville's Barista Express machine can do it all. If you've had trouble finessing an espresso machine before, you'll be happy to know that this espresso machine is automatic, however, should you want to go the manual route, you can tamp your espresso to your heart's content. Plus the automatic setting offers a simple streamlined experience for the perfect espresso. I'd be remiss if I failed to mention the adjustable PID digital temperature control and a Thermocoil heating system that accurately maintains water temperature.

The machine also has a built-in steam wand that makes barista-quality foam, with adjustable settings so you can make a latte, flat white, or macchiato. This machine is certainly expensive and has a learning curve to it. However, I think it will be worthwhile once you master your morning latte art. Additionally, the Barista Express only makes espresso beverages.

The best cheap coffee maker

Like an espresso in the morning to kick things off? Then you'll enjoy a shot of this coffee machine from Illy. If you're eager to start the day then the Illy Y3.3 Iperespresso is on hand to help. All you'll need to do in the morning is remove the pod tray and pop in your Illy iperEspresso capsules, then you’re ready to click the on/off/go button.

This coffee machine is tiny at under 4 inches wide, with a pleasing streamlined design that will work well on a kitchen counter or in your home office space. It could also make the perfect gift for a college student stuck in a tiny dorm room but in need of a lot of caffeine. It's available in four colors, but I'm most partial to the pretty Cape Town blue. The coffee machine features a removable reservoir which makes for easy filling, as well as a convenient auto shut-off feature, and can be programmed to pour coffees up to 7.4 ounces with volume control. It's very uncomplicated.  

It's ideal for espresso lovers looking for simplicity and reliability, but if you want to get creative with your coffee drinks, this might not be the best machine for you. It also takes Illy pods only.

What to consider when buying the best coffee maker

I've looked at bean-to-cup, pod, and ground filter coffee machines. I've also included our top pick of the best small coffee machines. These are all our top picks, but if you need a little jargon-busting first, here's what to consider when buying the best coffee machine:

Single-serve makers (pod coffee makers) are very popular as they are quick and easy to use and are normally pretty good value for money. However, purchasing one of these means you are committed to buying the right pods on a regular basis which could quickly add up if you drink a lot of coffee. 

Bean-to-cup machines tend to work out cheaper in the long run and are much more likely to please the coffee aficionado with their fresh-tasting results. They normally come with a range of settings so you can make anything from an espresso to a cappuccino, and have added features such as a milk frother so that you can have your very own latte or flat white from the comfort of your own home. 

Filter coffee makers are a more classic option, and better when catering to more people than just yourself. If you like your coffee strong and black, then a drip machine will most likely cater to your taste a little better than a single-serve or bean-to-cup machine, although they take a little longer to prepare your drink, so you’ll need to have patience when making filter coffee. 

Milk frothers — are they a must-have or a luxury? Well, it depends on whether you like a coffee with the perfect crema on top or not, and how much effort you're prepared to make. An integrated or automatic milk frother will undoubtedly drive up your coffee machine's price, but it will heat and froth milk for creamy coffees fast. Manual frothers may come with your coffee machine, but you have to do the frothing yourself. It doesn't mean you can't have great crema, but it will mean you have to allow for a bigger budget.

Is there really a difference between coffee makers?

In short: Yes. Coffee machines can be divided into two categories, espresso or filter. Espresso coffee machines are going to please coffee addicts who like the choice of everything from classic espresso to milky cappuccinos. Their pressurized hot water extracts rich flavor from coffee grounds, but they can really only handle single or double shots at any one time. Pod coffee machines are simplified forms of espresso machines that save you from having to measure coffee or manually control the pressure and water through the grounds.

Filter machines, on the other hand, are crowd-pleasers. The hot water is dripped through the coffee grounds quickly — and while you won't get the choice or the richer taste, you will get quantity, fast. If you like a no-fuss cup (or ten), then a filter machine is for you.

If you live alone or simply want a fresh cup of coffee without any hassle, go for a single-serve coffee maker that works with pods to prevent any messes and keep grounds fresh. Alternatively, a drip filter coffee maker will deliver rich batch brews to keep you and the people you live with happy for hours (kudos if you choose one with a keep-warm function). There are also some top espresso machines that will produce luxurious shots under high pressure when you want a boost of energy. Both have become a sort of a cultural phenomenon and have created brand awareness in the same way we refer to Kleenex or Purell. The allure of Keurig and Nespresso machines is that they both offer the convenience of a coffee fix without the involved measuring or clean-up required from traditional drip coffee makers. If you're truly just making for one, it cuts down on brewing more coffee than you need that will inevitably be thrown out, and if for a few people at a time, everyone can choose the coffee they want to drink, thanks to the abundance of capsule options. 

While as much as they are similar, they are both very different, and the machine you ultimately choose is a big commitment. After all, once you buy the machine, you'll continually be committing to their compatible coffee options.

Keurig vs. Nespresso: Design Differences

Keurig

Keurig's vast lineup of machines features a vast array of options. Its most basic machines will require you to fill each time to your desired fill, while its most advanced designs have metered amounts, customizable settings and even built-in milk frothers. The most common feature you'll find on a Keurig machine, is a large metered water tank, usually between 46 and 70 oz, with the option to choose single cup sizes in varying increments, such as 6 oz., 8oz., 10 oz., and 12 oz.. On more sophisticated versions like the Keurig K-Elite, you can also choose strength, temperature, and the option to brew coffee over ice. 

Keurig's most widespread brewing system is with a single needle that flows through the center of their K-Cup capsules as water flows through the pod to turn into coffee. It's more recent models, like the Keurig K-Supreme Plus, introduce MultiStream Technology, which uses 5 entrance needles instead of one to saturate the grounds more evenly throughout the pod and extract more flavor and aroma, for a richer coffee. 

Nespresso

Nespresso is divided into two machine categories: Vertuo and Original that use a different type of coffee pod: Vertuo and Original. Both machines have a one-touch operation, used capsule containers, and metered water tanks, but the main differences are found in the brewing and capsule style. Vertuo machines can brew six espresso and coffee sizes up to 18 oz., while Original can only brew drinks up to 5 oz. The amount of coffee that will dispense is also predetermined by your selected brew. More on that in a moment. 

They are often manufactured with renowned brands like Breville, DeLonghi and Krups.

True to its name, the Original line machines are the OG Nespresso machines and focus on the brand's origins: espresso.  It brews espresso using a pressured-based system that is 19 bars, which is far above industry standard (9) for an espresso machine. Water is forced through three punctures that eventually cause the foil wrapper to burst and for espresso to flow out. Users choose from Espresso or Lungo sizes with just one press. 

Vertuo
It was not until 2014 that Nespresso began offering Vertuo machines, which appear to have surpassed the Original in popularity in the U.S. This is most likely due to the fact that the Vertuo Line can make both espresso and coffee beverages. Its propriety Vertuo System uses Centrifusion technology, where the capsule spins up to 7,000 rotations per minute to thoroughly infuse the capsule.
